Chapter 90

I backed away, unable and unwilling to take my eyes off the advancing warlock, and his Queen as Daniel remained trapped. I could see energy rippling off him, but I had no knowledge of what he was seeing or hearing. Dermot advanced again, and as I stepped back, I felt my back press against the cool wall, trapping me. Dermot moved quickly, eliminating the gap between us, I could have sworn I felt his breath on my skin before I felt it. The power built quickly, and without me blocking its path, shot straight out of me. It hurled Dermot across the room, suspending his body the same way it did with Miranda, while Hyacinth watched, fascinated.
“My, my, my, aren’t you full of surprises,” Hyacinth muttered, as she moved closer to Dermot, this time I was able to watch as Dermot’s limp body slowly travelled through the air, he gently landed on the floor before he was released. “Extraordinary.” Hyacinth gasped as she also watched him land. I saw Hyacinth flick her wrist and Daniel was released, growling lowly, and moved quickly towards me. He began examining me immediately.
“Dermot didn’t touch me, I’m fine,” I whispered, desperate to keep Daniel’s wolf in check.
“This isn’t the kind of help I agreed to Hyacinth.” Daniel snapped, still examining me for injuries.
“Yes, well, call it a grandmother’s prerogative.” Hyacinth waved her hands, obviously tired. “We will continue after I have rested a short while. Aine will provide tea or coffee until I return.” She announced, she held her head in her hands and walked towards the door.
“Wait, Charlie, is your granddaughter?” Daniel asked in disbelief.
“No, dear boy, you’re my great, great, great grandson.” She replied as she left the room, leaving Daniel and I to come to terms with this new information.

Dermot led us back into the parlour where the woman, whose name I presumed was Aine was waiting, a different tea set on the table, this looked more like a breakfast set. With pastries, toast, a variety of jams and jellies, English muffins, crumpets, and even a couple of boiled eggs, laid out. She also had a teapot and French press; the coffee’s aroma provided a comfort I wasn't aware I needed until it enveloped me. Daniel ignored everyone in the room, took me over to one of the couches, and pulled me onto his lap. He immediately ran his nose along my shoulder to my neck. I understood he needed my scent to calm his wolf, so despite the goosebumps that appeared along my skin, and the ache it created in my core, I held him close and silently waited for him to stop vibrating with anger.
“Did my eyes turn purple?” I asked quietly, when it became obvious despite everything, we had learned Daniel was in no position to act rationally and ask anything himself.
“Yes, just before you... did whatever that was.” Dermot replied hesitantly because Daniel was still growling lowly at him, warning him to stay away. His eyes fixed to that of his wolf's.
“What did Hyacinth mean she is Daniel’s great however many grandmother?” I asked the room, still confused.
“Hyacinth came back here when her mate died, she was no longer needed by the pack, and had always planned on returning here, with him. But when he passed, she decided to come alone, and lead her people, she told her family she was returning to nature, and with no further explanation, left them. They didn’t need her anymore, but we did. She has kept her true identity hidden for nearly forty years, she knew if anyone knew there was still a full-blooded Fae out there, they would come after her. The last attack, the one that killed her mate, was too much for her to bare. They could’ve had another fifty years together if he hadn’t stepped in to protect her that day. So, she let everyone believe that Rose died, and Hyacinth was born, a little glamour to change her physical features and a spell to make it seem she had been here far longer than she really had, and she started gathering anyone with magic who wanted refuge.” The woman Aine, explained, as she poured Dermot a cup of tea.
“But you knew, how many of her people know her true identity, the secret she has been keeping from her family?” Daniel snarled, his voice gravelly, his eyes blazing amber.
“I know because she brought me with her from America. I was abandoned by my pack because I didn’t have a wolf.” That caught Daniel’s attention.
“That’s not possible.” He said quietly, I could see him trying to make the pieces fit but couldn’t.
“My parents were both half Fae, half Lycan, for whatever reason I inherited the Fae blood, but not the Lycan. My Alpha thought I was an abomination, he was hosting Hyacinth or Rose as she was known then and Alpha Thomas, her mate when she found me chained in the kitchen. She bought me from my Alpha, freeing me, and I became her constant companion and first pupil. It was also her that introduced seers to the packs, and with the help of her mate, she began spreading a new idea, of the species working together. Breeding to bring about a golden age of mixed species, with powers even greater than we had previously seen. However, this was sixty years ago, and not everyone liked her ideas, or that her children seemed to be mating with leaders from the most influential packs in the US, there were many attempts on her life before the one that killed her mate.” The woman said sadly. But a question was still gnawing at me.
“Why now? Why tell us now? Why not when Daniel first came here for help?” I asked, Daniel’s nose was still on my skin, his quiet low rumbling a warning for no one to get too close to either of us.
“Maybe now is the right time... the older Hyacinth gets, the more possible futures she sees, the harder it is for her to focus, but she never does anything without a reason. If she has chosen to share this information now, it has to be because she must, or because she needs you both to trust her. She has entrusted you with her most treasured secret. If her real identity became known, she would have to leave us and go back into hiding elsewhere. I know the stories you are told, we hid because of the humans, but they aren’t the only creatures in this world that will harm others to get or keep power. Hyacinth knows that all too well.” Aine said with a defiant look, I knew she wasn’t challenging Daniel, rather she was ready for him to argue her point and she was prepared to go to war over the idea that humans were the only reason the species went into hiding. However, he said nothing, his body had finally stopped vibrating, his anger dissipated as he held me. “Would you like a cup of tea? Or some coffee?” Aine asked once Daniel emerged from burying his face in my neck.
“Coffee please,” I said, as I looked into his eyes, his beautiful brown back, and his shock dissolved.
“Who attacked my... Hyacinth, and killed her mate?” Daniel finally asked, his voice his own, but still unable to let me go from his arms. Despite our audience, I loved being held by him, he always made me feel safe.
“Another Alpha, he feared the power Hyacinth had and the way her family was spreading, and he didn’t want his family to be a footnote in someone else’s dynasty,” Aine replied while pouring the coffee.
“I want a name,” Daniel said a little aggressively.
“It’s not my place to say.” Was all Aine would respond with, the tension in the room, which had been slowly dwindling, started to grow.
“Daniel, I realise you have a lot of questions, anyone would, but I think you should ask Hyacinth.” I softly suggested as I stroked his cheek. I felt his body sag, the last of the fight leaving him as he accepted, he would not be getting any more answers from her people and would have to wait to get the rest of the story from Hyacinth. I pressed my lips to his, hoping to cheer him up, but also proud of him for not starting an argument. Aine, brought our coffees over to us, no longer afraid of Daniel, since he had stopped growling. “Thank you.” I smiled at her, she cocked her head to the side, whilst looking at me, her face an unreadable expression. “Something wrong?” I asked, a little unsure and nervous.
“No, sorry, just a little lost in thought,” Aine replied, still with that strange unreadable face.
“I’ve heard more crazy things in the last couple of weeks than the rest of my life combined, what it is?” I asked with a chuckle, trying to convince myself that whatever it was, it couldn’t be any worse than what was already happening.
“For a second, I could’ve sworn I saw someone else looking through your eyes,” Aine said softly, still staring at me.
“What does that mean?” I asked a cold hard fear gripped my stomach.
“It could mean that someone has taken control of your body and is watching us through you, or more likely, you have something inside of you itching to come out, but something is blocking it,” Aine said, looking closer at my eyes, edging her way towards me.
“It’s a spell, that has bound her powers, but now that she is almost of age, her powers are bleeding through, forcing themselves out of the cracks in the spell’s containment,” Hyacinth said from the door, making me jump. “Whatever we have seen, and whatever you have done so far, is just the tip of the iceberg, you have more power within you than I have ever seen before. With the exception of one person.” Hyacinth said staring straight at me, I felt the excitement and dread fight for control of my body. If there was someone else maybe they had answers, but if what I had done so far was nothing compared to what I could do, what did that mean for Daniel, for us and for the pack?
“Who did the spell to bind my powers? And who is the person with powers like mine?” I asked, terrified of the answer, but resolved that the only way to get the life I wanted with Daniel was to learn as much as I could.
“I don’t know who bound your powers, but they must have been extremely skilled. His powers are not like yours, but his powers are unique and vastly greater than anyone else I have ever met, like you. It will be interesting to see, when the spell finally breaks, who has the greater power, you or him.” Hyacinth mused, as she made her way to the table, Aine had already placed a cup of tea on it for her.
“So, who is this person, who has so much power, and why haven’t I heard of anyone like him before today?” Daniel asked, clearly still upset with her for keeping him in the dark so long.
“When I met him, he was going by the name Pinchas, but he has had so many different names over the years, so no one knows that it was all done by the same man.” Hyacinth replied, taking her seat.
“Alright, but who exactly is he?” Daniel asked getting frustrated.
“Well, if you believe him, then he’s a god.” She replied, taking a sip of her tea while I rethought everything, I thought I knew, again.
