In The Beginning, Chapter 22
Charlie POV
Daniel was silent the entire ride back to the house, his emotions were all over the place, shifting quickly as a new thought occurred to him. I tried to ask him to talk to me, but my mouth refused to open every time I glanced at his furrowed brow. When he finally parked the car in the dark garage, he let out a heavy sigh before looking at me. I didn’t need to hear him say the words he was struggling to find, so I said it for him.
“You’re worried that Theia has put us all in danger, that it would have been better for her to approach us alone, so we could slowly drip information to the pack, give them time to understand and get used to me and my powers before finding out more. And you’re happy I will have answers, but angry at the way Theia went about things, and you’re afraid I’m gonna be upset if you lose your temper at her over it. I won’t, I will ask you to try and remain respectful, she is a goddess after all, and I don’t want her turning you into an ornament.” I said with a soft smile, he chuckled at the last part.
“I wasn’t planning on raising my voice, but I have to be able to call the shots when it comes to the pack, and I need that to be clear with her.” Daniel finally replied with a sigh, as his nose brushed against my neck. “Thank you for not being angry with me.” He mumbled, and I couldn’t contain my giggle.
“You don’t have to thank me for something I can’t control, I’m just as worried and angry as you, it was just such a shock at first I wasn’t thinking about what comes next.” I explained.
“Yeah, she used something similar to my Alpha aura on us, made us all calm, I could feel it, but I couldn’t fight it, it was so strong.” Daniel leaned back in his seat with a groan, before getting out of the car, and whipping around to my side.
“You don’t have to open my door every time.” I said with a grin because I secretly liked it.
“I like doing it.” He said as he took my hand, though the converted barn was protected from the wind and snow, it was still icy cold outside of the car’s heated interior. I leaned into his heat for comfort, as we made our way to the house. The clouds seemed heavy and low, and I was grateful we would be home before the next flurry of snow fell. Daniel led me to the house quickly, only stopping to inspect a new rose bush I was sure wasn’t there when we left. Once inside he placed me on the coffee table, in front of the fireplace before lighting it, I felt the heat almost immediately and removed my coat to languish in the warmth on my skin. When I opened my eyes, I caught Daniel watching me with a content smile that made me bashful, I could feel my cheeks getting hot. “How would you feel about a bath before bed?” He asked, his smile turning into a dirty grin.
“We are waiting for my aunt?” I couldn’t stop smiling at his boldness. “But we could see how tired we are after she leaves?” He let his jacket fall to the floor, and started rolling up the sleeves of his shirt suggestively, one eyebrow cocked as he silently watched my reaction. I was fine until his eyes raked down my body as he unbuttoned his cuff, his gaze lingered on my breasts, he licked his lips as he moved down my body. I couldn’t stop how my body reacted, my arousal soaked my panties instantly, his nostrils flared and he chuckled darkly. Before I could react, he was knelt between my knees, one hand on the small of my back, the other in my hair, as he sucked and nibbled my lips. I gasped as he pulled my body flush with his, allowing his tongue to dominate my mouth. His kiss left me breathless as his lips moved along my jaw, I gasped large gulps of air. My fingers were gripping the collar of his shirt in my need and my legs encircled his hips. He ran his hand from my back to my hip, down my thigh then under my skirt to my panties. He sucked on my mark as his fingers slid into my wetness, I moaned as my legs trembled.
“Patience kitten.” He murmured into my ear; his lips brushed against the lobe. His fingers that had just been curling over the spot that makes me desperate for him, withdrew, making me whimper. He stood to his full height, his eyes burning into mine, until he brought his fingers to his lips, his nose flared, and his eyes closed a second before his tongue lasciviously licked them clean. When he opened his eyes, they were the amber of his wolf, he made a rumbling sound of pleasure before they melted back to Daniel’s chocolaty brown. I shuddered involuntarily at the loss of his heat on my skin, he bent and placed a soft kiss on my temple, before he headed out of the room. “Any idea what to serve an ageless, immortal goddess?” He called over his shoulder as he headed for the kitchen. I didn’t get a chance to answer, as a knock at the door interrupted us. Daniel held a hand out to keep me where I was as he made his way to the door, I stood on shaky legs and smoothed out my dress and hair. Daniel returned silently, with Theia trailing behind him, looking around inquisitively, her smile brightened at seeing me, and she quickly and gracefully moved around Daniel to embrace me.
“I still cannot believe how you’ve grown, and into such a beauty.” Theia stated affectionately, my cheeks flushed at her appraisal. “You get that from your father, he could never take a compliment either, the only time I ever saw your mother blush was when Ares would look at her.” She added, still smiling at me.
“What’s he like?” I blurted, maybe because my mother had always been so tight lipped about him, Theia chuckled to herself.
“I promise to tell you all about him when we start training, but for tonight, there are other things we need to discuss.” She said with a smile.
“Can I offer you a drink? Water, tea, coffee?” Daniel asked, and I could feel his warring feelings, part of him wanted nothing more than to let me have time with my family, and get answers, but his obligation to the pack left him with little room to manoeuvre.
“Just a water please.” Theia replied, but her eyes never left my face, and I found her disrespect to Daniel irritating, and I could feel his anger at her response too, however he strode into the kitchen without a word.
“Do you have a problem with Daniel?” I asked her once he had left the room.
“No, not at all. He isn’t who I would’ve chosen for you, but it was not my decision.” She replied with a shrug.
“He is my mate, and Alpha of this pack, he deserves respect. Also, you cannot take over the pack like you did tonight, Daniel should’ve had final say over what happens information was released.” I informed her, respectfully, but with enough bite to let my real feelings on the matter known.
“You are right, I apologise. It has been many years since I returned to earth, I have been staying with my sister in her realm for a long time.” She explained, Daniel returned with a glass of water, and handed it to her.
“Do you need anything?” He asked me softly, his hand snaking around my waist possessively.
“No, I’m fine.” I replied with a smile, and a peck on his lips. When I returned my attention to Theia, she was watching our interaction intently.
“I apologise for my behaviour Alpha, as I was explaining, my brother's actions made it difficult for many of us to stay here on earth. I have been staying with my sister, and... her realm is very different from earth, and its social protocols.” She said to Daniel, he nodded his acceptance. “My intent was to help.”
“Help how?” I asked puzzled.
“Surely some of your pack has relatives in other packs? Relatives they may even boast to about their new Luna’s link to the Gods? Word will get to their Alphas, who will be more receptive to hearing your proposal, some may want to make an alliance on that alone.” Theia explained with a frown, clearly concerned we hadn’t thought the same thing.
“What about those who crave power? Who will stop at nothing to have Charlie?” Daniel asked aggressively, his hold on me tightening. I placed my hands on his, and he tore his gaze from Theia’s shocked face, and buried his nose in my neck to calm himself.
“You believe I would ever endanger Charlie? I put a protective spell over all of the pack lands, no one who intends Charlie harm can enter without me knowing it. And I realise I should have asked, but I activated part of the bond that they now share will Charlie through you, they would all die for her now, just like you would.” Theia informed Daniel, his eyes snapped to hers, challenging her conviction. “The only one who can prevent the future I saw is Charlie. Her life is the utmost importance.”
“Why me?” I snapped, angry that it was all being dumped in my lap. “I mean, you’re a powerful goddess, I’ve had my powers a day. Why can’t you stop Zeus, or the vampire King or whatever he calls himself?” I pressed when she looked at me in surprise.
“The king of the vampires isn’t Zeus, he’s his son. We will be able to move against our brother, but our parents favour balance over everything. If I made a move against Apollo, or the King of the Vampires, my parents would intervene, and the planet would most likely be destroyed. The least extreme would be burning it, allowing all life to die, so it could start again later. At worst, my sister and father will destroy the entire solar system by exploding the sun.” Theia said solemnly, and I felt my knees give way beneath me, Daniel’s arms the only thing keeping me up.
“Why?” I gasped; the weight of the responsibility I now held was suffocating.
“Balance in everything, its the only law that binds my parents, she is life, he is death, she is light, he is dark, she is the stars, he is the vacuum. If I moved against my nephew, I would be tipping the scales, that isn’t allowed, ever. Which is why I needed you, your father, can create universes, and that power is within you, you just have to tap into it. I will help you, and once Apollo is dead Zeus will have to act, or lose everything. That’s when mother will send Ares to earth, to balance the scales against Zeus, and we will be able to defeat him once and for all.” Theia explained impassioned.
“I don’t understand.” I muttered dumbly as Daniel shifted me to a chair. “None of this makes sense, why isn’t your father stepping in now, when Apollo? Apollo the SUN god, is king of the vampires, you’re gonna have to explain that one. How the hell does a sun god become the creature of the night?” I suddenly ranted, my thoughts flying from my mouth without editing.
“I know, there is a lot to explain, and I will answer all of your questions as best I can, but there is a lot I myself do not know. You think of us as gods, but we are just puppets of our parents. They are the gods, we are just their children, and we have grasped no more than the basics in our lives. Which are but a fraction of theirs.” Theia smiled ruefully, and I felt the icy hands of fear grip my spine.
