Chapter 104

“First things first, you have to forget everything you’ve ever learned about any religions because they all got a little bit right and a lot wrong. In the beginning, there was light and darkness, life and death, mother and father. For the purposes of making, it easier for everyone, we will call them by their Greek names, Persephone and Hades. For eons they existed without form, Persephone created universes, realms, and dimensions, it doesn’t matter what you call them, and Hades destroyed them, in an endless cycle. But as is the way of everything, Persephone wanted more. She created life on her planets and watched them grow and evolve under her nurturing hand, she watched the life she created, birth more life and wanted to experience that herself. So, she made a place where part of herself and Hades could become corporeal, where they could finally touch each other and create a life of their own. Their firstborn was Ares, a beautiful son, who although he had both light and dark, excelled at creation, just like his mother, he loved creating stars and constellations. He aided his mother in her work and found joy in it. Soon after they had a daughter, Hecate, she followed in her father’s footsteps, she had a gift for knowing when a planet or star had outlived its purpose and with the exception of a slight accident early on, when she wiped out the dinosaurs, she also flourished under her father’s guidance and found happiness in her work. The next children born to Hades and Persephone were Hera, Demeter and Aphrodite, the three sisters were extremely close, in age and affection, and after falling in love with planet Earth, it became their school, playground and for want of better word their workshop. A little while later Poseidon was born, and following his sisters, he came to Earth, feeling a connection to the oceans, after him, Athena, Hestia and Artemis were born. The final child born to the couple was Zeus, a spiteful and jealous child, who resented his siblings’ accomplishments. He couldn’t create like his siblings, so he perverted religions, placing himself as the King of the Gods, or the only God, deepening the resentment between the siblings.” She took a deep breath, preparing herself for whatever she was going to say next. “Your father is Ares, you are his only child and technically a demi-goddess, his sisters are the goddesses of all creatures on Earth, their creators, and your aunts.” She said grimacing like she expected me to explode. I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t respond at all, what my mother was saying was ridiculous and incredible. That’s when I started laughing, hysterically.
“So, you’re saying, we’re cousins?” Daniel asked somewhat, dumbfounded himself.
“No, no, no. Your race was created by one of the goddesses, not born from them, you share no DNA with the goddess that created you.” My mother tried explaining over my uncontrollable giggles.
“And the myths and legends...?” He asked unable to finish his thought coherently.
“Some are rooted in truth but perverted by Zeus, others are complete fictions. Like practically everything written about Ares, and pretty much everything about Hera! She never married her brother for a start.” My mother laughed a little humourlessly. I, however, was still crying with laughter, because it all felt insane.
“So, Charlie is the niece of our moon goddess?” I could see Daniel trying to wrap his head around the whole thing. While I dissolved into a wheezing, breathless mess of tears and cramps from my extended giggle fit.
“Yes, she is.” My mother said in a completely serious tone, renewing my hysteria.
“Have there been many children of these gods?” Daniel asked, being forced to be the voice of reason and keep a clear head as I couldn’t.
“There have been several, but Charlie is the only child of Ares, he rarely came to Earth, but the last time he did, he met me. I’m his mate, the only fated mate of a god as far as we are aware, although Hera did have a chosen mate, whom she had several children with before both he and one of her sons was killed by Zeus. One of the many reasons Ares kept us secret, he didn’t want the same thing happening to me, and Charlie. He saw the devastation it caused Hera, and her other children went into hiding, Zeus swore, he would wipe out any child of a god that wasn’t his own. And he has many, all born from unions with his siblings’ creations, further corrupting them.” I finally controlled my laughter, wiped my eyes and struggled to fight back tears of sorrow, unable to comprehend the pain all that loss had created.
“Mom, you can’t honestly believe that Dad is a god!? Or that I’m whatever-”
“A demigoddess.” My mother interrupted with a nod.
“Right... you don’t really believe any of this? Right? Because it sounds crazy!” I asked, inching closer to her, desperate to find any other explanation for what I was.
“When your father told me, I was ready to have him committed, I thought he had lost his mind! I mean talk about delusions of grandeur!” She laughed, Daniel and I joined in but more anxious. “But then he showed me what he could do, he created things, out of nothing! It was incredible, so for a while, I convinced myself that whatever he was, maybe calling himself a God was the easiest way to explain it to a human. And then I met his sisters, and I don’t know how to explain it, but I knew, they were our creators, they were incredible, and they were telling me the truth. In three days, you will become like them, a Goddess, my beautiful girl.” She whispered with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, I have to ask, do you know what her powers will be? What Charlie will be capable of doing? Or where her father is? Because we are preparing for war, so having a God on our side could mean the difference between life and death, and we have been reliably informed death means the death of everything and everyone in this world.” Daniel rambled, his anxiety and fear combined with my own emotions made me dizzy.
“Who told you that?” My mother asked him confused, Daniel reluctantly turned to me, and my mother’s eyes followed him.
“I had a dream, everything was dead, and a woman with violet eyes and-” I began.
“And the hair of every colour and hue?” Again, my mother interrupted.
“Yes! Who is she?” I asked, I almost leapt out of my seat.
“Hera... what did she tell you?” My mother asked, there was an urgency in her voice that scared me.
“She told me to complete the mate bond, and stop the packs being taken over by the vampires then she would find me,” I replied, as my anxiety rose.
“Oh, my stars! Then it’s actually happening, he is going to end it all!” My mother gasped then sobbed softly, it scared me more than anything else I had witnessed so far.
“Who? Mom? Who is going to end it all?” I asked, I left the couch and knelt in front of her, I gripped her hands and silently begged her to look at me.
“Your father, on the rare occasions he would confide in me about his fears, he said that the ultimate revenge, in Zeus’ eyes, would be to destroy Earth and everything his siblings created.” My mother whispered softly, as tears fell freely down her face. I turned to Daniel, confused.
“Do you think the vampires could be working with Zeus?” I asked him.
“What did the woman... Hera, say in the first dream, do you remember? Something about fighting with us?” He asked frantically. I closed my eyes as I dug through my memories of the dream.
“My sisters and I will stand with you against our brother,” I said picturing her face as I said it.
“Then it appears she knows what her brother is planning,” Daniel said as he stood and paced, I could practically hear the gears turning as he tried to figure out what was going on. “And the reason we had to mark each other must have something to do with your powers! Perhaps that’s why Hera told us one thing and Pinchas another, neither has the full picture! And that could be why Hyacinth can’t see your future, think about it! If you were going to create a species with the ability of foresight, you wouldn’t want them to see your future, that would be giving them power over you, an advantage you wouldn’t willingly give up.” Daniel theorised; I could feel him getting excited as pieces started fitting together.
“Daniel, you can’t honestly believe I’m a...” I couldn’t even say it, it was too absurd.
“The moment I saw you, something in me recognised your divinity, I’ve always thought of you as a Goddess.” He said with a loving smile.
“And that’s very sweet, but I’m serious now,” I said as I rolled my eyes at his silliness.
“So am I.” He said without any hint of amusement.
