Chapter 91
“Just to be clear, you don’t think he’s a god, or that I’m one... right?” I asked with a humourless chuckle. “Because that would just be insane.” Daniel was staring at me, a sad look on his face. I knew he believed it; I just couldn’t understand why.
“I don’t know if he is a god, or he’s just so old he has decided it’s the best way to describe himself, or he has delusions of grandeur, but he is the only other being I have met that radiates power the same way you do. I didn’t even realise how similar your energies are until you threw poor Dermot across the room. And now that I think about it, he could be the one that tried to penetrate my protective shield this morning.” Hyacinth mused as she sipped her tea.
“How do we contact him? You must have a way, so we can talk to him, find out more about Charlie, who bound her powers and where she came from?” Daniel asked quietly, I could tell he was still angry with Hyacinth, he wouldn’t look at her, and the truth about her identity had changed the way he spoke with her.
“If I’m right, and it was him, he is probably either on his way here or somewhere close by, the question is what is he here for? What does he want, and does he know about Charlie?” Hyacinth replied, terrifying me.
“Could he be her father?” Daniel asked, somewhat hesitantly, his eyes watched my face for my reaction.
“I don’t think so, every magic has its own signature, some beings can sense it and of those who can they all claim it’s something different. For me, it’s a taste, but I’ve heard others describe it as a colour or smell. When two beings are related their magic tastes similar, the closer the relation, the more similar the taste. When Charlie used her powers, I tasted something sweet, like honey, but with something a little spicy too, Pinchas’ powers, have a similar sweet and spicy taste, but his is more like salted caramel. They may be related, but I don’t think he’s, her father.” Hyacinth explained as I started getting lightheaded.
“Can you use that to find out if he was the one who tried to get through your protections?” Daniel asked, I could see the cogs turning in his mind, he was desperate to find more information so he could protect me.
“No, I can only detect magic used in my presence, or sometimes the aftereffect if it was a particularly powerful spell, but whatever was done this morning, would have dissipated by now,” Hyacinth replied, she picked up a crumpet smothered in butter and took a bite.
“There was an intruder at the pack, they were spying on the house, could it be the same person? Could it have been Pinchas? Searching for Charlie?” Daniel asked, his mind making a connection I had forgotten all about in the chaos.
“It’s possible, he has been hiding for a long time, and searching for something too. You won’t find any mention of him in our histories, not under that name anyway.” Hyacinth murmured as she got lost in her own thoughts.
“What names has he used? Maybe we could find something that will tell us whether he means to harm Charlie?” Daniel asked, determined to find something to help.
“More than I know for sure, but he did mention the name Protectus, also from what I have read I believe he may have been the inspiration behind the story of Perseus, perhaps even Odysseus too. There is even some evidence that suggests he may have been inspired the Norse religion, and some of the tales told of their Gods and heroes, are actually stories of Pinchas and his powers.” Hyacinth told Daniel and the two became lost in their theories and stories, while I was struggling to wrap my head around the idea that I could have a family somewhere in the world.
The being sat in a tree and watched the wolf as he led the girl into the cottage, his curiosity piqued, he wanted more information before he approached her. He needed to be sure she was the one, he waited until she entered the building, before he moved from his hiding place. He had used his magic to transform himself into a bird and flew down to the windows of the cottage. He liked Hyacinth, admired her even, but he wasn’t ready to expose himself, he needed to know he was right, or he could be found again and tortured. He couldn’t risk being found, not when he had waited so long to be reunited with his family, he had to know more. He watched the wolf and the Fae leave with the girl, so he flew around the house to find a new vantage point to observe her. Finding the right window, he silently watched as the Fae incapacitated the wolf, while her underling, advanced on the girl. He felt his heart rate speed up as the man approached the girl, Charlie, but when he saw her repel the man, he knew she was the one he had been looking for, the one he had waited patiently for. He just needed one more thing, and he would be able to tell her everything he knew, desperately hoping he could convince her of the truth. But he had to act fast, he couldn’t see a mark upon her from her lover, but that wouldn’t last long. He took flight, before using his powers to transport himself to his hiding place, finding the gem he required, he transported himself back to Hyacinth’s front door.
Charlie POV
A sudden knock at the door pulled us all from our thoughts, Daniel immediately left Hyacinth’s side where they had been discussing legends and stories, some I recognised, others were lost on me. I saw the fear in Dermot’s eyes as he moved towards the door. Just as Dermot’s hand reached for the handle, a man appeared in the centre of the room. Daniel flung me behind him, his claws out, a deep threatening growl erupted from his chest, and his body protected mine. The man looked at him with a bored expression, before turning towards Hyacinth.
“My dear, how have you been? I see this little settlement you had dreams of creating is coming along quite well. I apologise for barging in, but I have a rather time-sensitive issue.” He said to her with a smile. “And my darling Aine, how you’ve matured, you look radiant as ever!” He said to the woman, who appeared terrified.
“Pinchas?” Hyacinth asked, clearly unsure.
“Yes, oh, of course you don’t recognise me, sorry, I often forget which glamour I’m using. One moment.” He pulled a large crystal out of a pocket in his pants and focused on it for a moment. The short, strawberry blonde hair and hazel eyes were suddenly transformed into a longer, very dark brunette colour, and eyes of blue/green. I held onto Daniel, terrified, of this strange man, as his body changed from very slim, to a more toned athletic look. He looked less like a marathon runner, and more like a sprinter, I thought as I watched his muscles grow before my eyes. “There we are, now, the reason I’m here. Charlie? Why are you hiding behind this hilarious wolf?” The man asked, clearly, he knew who we were, but his attitude was doing nothing to calm Daniel’s anger and mistrust. I didn’t dare move as Daniel roared, his usual warming growl was so loud it sounded like a battle cry, daring the being to come closer.
“You don’t touch her!” Daniel snarled his voice the gravelly tone of his wolf.
“My, my what a protective mate you are.” The man laughed. “Forgive me, I’ve forgotten my manners in the excitement. My name is Pinchas, or at least that’s what Hyacinth knows me as, but a name doesn't really mean anything does it, Rose?” He said pointedly to Hyacinth. “You may know me by some of my other names, but right now my past isn’t important, our future is. And the future depends on you both. I had a vision, of the future, of the war, and of what starts it all. When you two mark each other and complete the mate bond you have to travel to the home of Josephina Phillips. Only then will you get the next piece of the puzzle and prevent the war from being lost. Now, Charlie, come have some tea while we discuss our next steps.” I stared at the man for several moments, dumbfounded by everything this being had said or done since he appeared in front of us. I slowly absorbed the words that came out of his mouth, my brain slowly understood through my terror. I broke down laughing, tears streaming down my face as I stared at the maniac in front of me, his puzzled expression made me laugh more. Finally, Daniel’s frustrated growl helped me calm myself.
“You did all this, scared us half to death, to tell me to go see my mom!” I barked angrily. “You couldn’t just call us and tell us that, write us? No, you had to terrify us, put everyone on high alert, and scare us shitless!” I screamed, overwhelmed to the point of breaking.
“It’s a little bit more complicated than that, if you two mark each other and don’t go to see your mother, no later than the next day, you will unleash a darkness that will destroy everything. The planet will die, and the war will be lost.” The being said as he took a seat opposite Hyacinth and a sip of the tea that had been poured for him.
“How could us not going to visit my mother cause the end of the world?” I asked exasperated.
“If you would sit down, I will explain, please?” The being asked, Daniel had straightened slightly but was still standing a little in front of me, he turned to look at my reaction, waiting for me to decide what we would do next.
