In The Beginning, Chapter 47
I felt terrible, leaving Daniel to deal with the new wolves alone, but deep down I knew getting a firmer grip on my powers and how to use them was more beneficial in the long run. I reached inside myself for my power, it was becoming easier each day to find and grasp. I let it warm me as I grabbed my coat and walked outside with Theia. We were a fair distance from the meadow, so I took Theia to the woods that surrounded the town, threatening to engulf it if not kept at bay.
“I need to tell you something, and I’m not sure you are going to like it.” I admitted as we left the building.
“Are you worried I will... shoot the messenger?” She smiled, and I chuckled awkwardly.
“Yes, and no... I met your son today, well I met him a week ago, but I didn’t know he was Romulus then, he was going by the name Pinchas? Anyway, he came to warn me that Apollo is after me, with Zeus’s permission.”
“Oh... Is he...? Is he well?” She asked softly, her eyes betraying her hurt.
“He seems in good health if that’s what you mean... he feels guilty for the death of his father and brother. He has been avoiding you because he thinks you blame him too.” I admitted, and I heard her stifle a sob, I avoided looking at her, giving her as much privacy as I could.
“Please tell him, I miss him, and I don’t blame him, if he had gone with them, he would be dead too.” She asked of me quietly.
“Of course, I did ask him to consider talking to you, I sensed that you missed him, and told him as much. So, what are we doing today?” I asked, changing the subject, as we took our first steps inside the treeline.
“I was thinking of trying something a little harder, but it would serve you well to know how to teleport in battle. Is teleport not the right word?” She asked at my bemused expression.
“Teleport means to instantly move from one place to another. To disappear from one place, and instantly appear somewhere else, but do you really think I can do that?” I asked, a little sceptical.
“You have grasped simple concepts easily. I wish to see how you fare with more complex actions. I do not expect you to go far, but maybe you can move a few feet today.” Theia smiled encouragingly. I nodded my head and took a deep breath. “Now, I want you to pick a spot, and concentrate on it. Imagine yourself there, picture your magic taking you there.” I looked at a gap in the trees a few feet away, the sprinkling of snow on the ground, the rough surface of the trees, and tried to picture myself there, but nothing happened. I tried to imagine my power there, drawing me in, nothing. After nearly an hour, I had moved nowhere, and my legs were beginning to ache. I jumped up and down, walked a little, and tried again, still nothing. I was beginning to get frustrated, and Theia’s mantra of “everything begins with your intentions” was starting to grate on me. “Hmm.” Theia examined me intently after another hour of nothing. “I would like to try something else. I wish to see if your defensive instincts will protect you, so I am going to attack you. I will not aim to fatally wound, but you must fear that I will hurt you for this to work, do you understand?”
“Yeah, but do you really- ah!” I yelped as Theia swung her arm, her fist nearly colliding with my face, as I jumped back. She advanced after me, her fighting style was intense, but also graceful. Each advance and attack appeared like a dance move. She swung around, aiming a kick to my torso, her bare toes pointed like a ballet dancer, my arms flew up instinctively to block it, and I could almost feel the bruise form on my forearms as our bodies connected.
“Use your power! Move away from my attack!” Theia screamed as she advanced again.
“I’m trying!” I grunted, as I barely escaped another blow from her fists. Her arm swung, missing my face by a hair, but her body kept going, using her momentum, she shifted her weight, and brought her foot around, hitting me square in the chest. I reeled backwards, the air forced from my lungs painfully, as I tumbled to the ground. Lying on the cold floor, I saw Theia’s concerned face staring down at me.
“Are you alright?” She asked, her face pained from injuring me. I nodded, it still hurt to inhale, and I was trying to keep my breathing steady, talking didn’t seem wise. “We will try again the day after tomorrow, you will need some time to rest, your powers will heal you quicker that way.” She explained with an apologetic smile as she helped me to my feet. I groaned involuntarily as moving seemed to make my entire body throb painfully. “Let’s get you home.” Theia chuckled placing her arm around my waist, I felt the strangest sensation, it was like I was fading away, drifting on a cloud, and then I was in the pack house. Theia lowered me onto the couch before I passed out, the journey left me lightheaded, and my aching body threatened to collapse if I didn’t sit. “Do not think today was a bad day, you blocked several of my attacks, and maintained your grip on your powers, you are improving much faster than I expected. And your powers will ensure your bruises are gone by morning, although you may feel tired and sore. I will return on Sun’s Day, to try again.” Theia said with a nod, standing, satisfied with both her speech and our session.
“Sunday.” I agreed, and tried to wave, but the ache just made me wince instead.
“Yes, Sun... Day. I could heal you if it is too painful, but your powers need to practise when possible. If you have no experience healing yourself, how will your powers improve?” I could see the battle on Theia’s face.
“Could you talk me through trying to heal myself? At least a little? So far, the only thing I’ve healed on myself is a cut on my foot and a few hickies.” I admitted as I took slow breaths.
“What’s a hic-key?” Theia asked, her head tilted to the side as she examined me or my statement, I wasn’t sure.
“It’s kinda like a bite, but made with affection during, before or after sex. Biting is a part of Lycan courtship, but it feels good. I’m not explaining this very well.” I admitted, my cheeks burning with embarrassment.
“So, you enjoy pain with your pleasure? Like Sado\masochism?” Theia asked, and I couldn’t help but giggle, despite the pain it caused, transforming my laughter into a strange chortling, groaning sound.
“You know about BDSM but not hickies?” I managed to choke out, between my pained guffaws.
“I found it in the internet, the many kicks-” Theia began.
“Kinks.” I corrected.
“Oh, yes kinks, and fetishes?” She looked at me to ensure she got it right, I nodded for her to continue. “Are fascinating, and a little disgusting. I believe there is a psychological reason for each and every one of them, but I am still collecting data.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” I admitted, and she gave me a curious look.
“Why do you believe you enjoy pain with pleasure?” She asked, there was no judgement, just curiosity.
“It probably has something to do with growing up without a father... maybe a part of me can’t accept pleasure without some pain, as it is all I’ve ever known? Every achievement, or accolade was always tainted by the sadness that my father wasn’t there to share it with me. Now I can’t experience extreme pleasure without a little pain? Maybe?” I added weakly after seeing her pained expression.
“I wish I could have made it possible for you to grow up with your father. I would not blame you if you despised us for all we have put you and your mother through. But please try not to hate him, it hurt Ares more than I can explain to leave you both. He is hundreds of millions of years old, and I am not much younger, but the day he left? Was the first time I saw him cry, he openly wept as he held you, kissed you. Then when he had to leave, I had never seen him in such pain.” Theia admitted, her voice cracking as her sorrow seeped though.
“What would’ve happened? If he had stayed, I mean.” I asked softly, almost too afraid of her answer to ask the question.
“Do you remember when I told you Earth still has scars from our battles?” She asked, I nodded, unsure where she was going. “And when I told you about the first time Zeus attacked us and our work?” I nodded again, and she took a deep, steadying breath. “That place is now the Sahara Desert. The land used to be lush and fertile, we tried many times to return it to its former state, but our battle destroyed it, and it was beyond our powers to heal. If Ares had stayed, and fought Zeus to protect you and your mother, he could have lost you both anyway, and millions would have died.” Theia explained with a sad smile.
“Yesterday, I saw some images, some of your memories, I think. Was that... was that death valley?” I asked tentatively.
“Yes, that was the last time we fought Zeus, many of us left after that. Zeus called our battle the Titanomachy, the wrath of God, different stories, but the same outcome, at least in his sick mind.” Theia explained. “But enough about that. Let’s focus on helping you heal. Take my hands, I will withhold my power, but a tactile stimulus can aid in keeping you grounded. Like when you reach inside to grasp your power, I want you to imagine it moving over every area that causes pain. Let it flow into those areas, you will not have to think about healing, it is a natural process, just allow your power to build in those areas. It will take care of the rest.” She explained as she took my hands, I still had a hold of my powers, so I focused on the pain, almost willing my power to ease the ache. In seconds my chest felt less tight, and my breath came easier, like someone had placed a cool, numbing lotion to my skin. Soon the tiny shards that seemed to line my lungs dulled, I took a deep breath to test the pain, but it didn’t seem as bad. “Very good, I can tell you are healing nicely. Now try without my help.” She instructed as she released my hands, but the power remained, flowing over and through my skin. “Now, release your power, and let it move over you.” I did as I was told, and I felt a sharp pain as it receded into my sore chest, forcing a hiss from my lips.
“Charlie? What’s wrong? Have you been attacked?” I heard Daniel’s voice in my mind the moment I released my power, he was frantic with worry.
“I’m fine, a little bump in training, I’ll be fine.” I tried to reassure him.
“I’ve been trying to link you for the past ten minutes, where are you?” He asked, still panicked.
“Hold on, I need to ask Theia if my powers could block my link.” I replied, I looked to Theia who was watching me puzzled. “Theia? Could my powers block my link with Daniel, without me being aware of it?” I asked, while she looked thoughtful for a moment.
“I am not sure, as I have told you before, you are the first of our kind to mate with a Lycan, we simply do not know how that will affect you, or your power.” Theia replied kindly, but it sparked a memory.
