In The Beginning, Chapter 62
I answered the door with shaking hands, the nerves were kicking in now I was actually alone with a potential threat. I breathed a big sigh of relief when I opened the door and saw Elaina and a woman who had to be her mother.
“Elaina, I didn’t expect to see you today!” I smiled.
“I tagged along, for moral support and to ask if there has been any progress... with- with letting Warren come to the pack?” Both women looked at me expectantly, I could see the hope in their eyes, I chuckled awkwardly.
“Hi, I’m Charlie.” I introduced myself to the second woman.
“Oh, Evangeline, most people call me Ev, or Evy...” The woman awkwardly replied.
“Well come in, I will make us coffee before the others show up.” I sighed, leading the women into the house and taking their coats.
When we were finally in the kitchen, and I had something to focus on, I tried to explain the bind the elders had put us in.
“The elders don’t want him coming into the pack. Right now, Daniel is trying to negotiate a way for the seer to come to the city to meet with Warren, but some of the elders are opposed. If I understand it correctly...” I tried to remember everything Daniel had told me while we got dressed and ate breakfast that morning. “The seer needs contact with the person who she is trying to read? Is that the right term?” I asked suddenly unsure if I was replacing terminology with B movie fantasy plots.
“Sounds right, and we get what you mean, the seer has to touch Warren, and he could use his powers to influence her, making the whole thing pointless.” Elaina sighed unhappily.
“I know it seems impossible right now...” I sighed, handing her latte to her, when I had an idea. “Theia?” I called, and true to her word she appeared right beside me, forcing me to move out of the way or get bumped into a countertop. Elaina and Evy shrieked in surprised, and I swore I heard Daniel chuckle.
“Yes Charlie?” She asked, eying the women suspiciously.
“Who made the nymphs?” I asked, and I saw Evy lean forward, her eyes wide.
“Demeter, or Deo as she is known by those who love her.” Theia replied with a smile.
“What can you tell us about fire nymphs?” I asked, and Theia’s eyes lit up.
“In the beginning, Deo made a male and a female with the abilities to use elements as they were then called. Air, Water, Earth, and Fire, she was curious how these elements would work when combined, and hoping for as many variations as possible, she made them extremely attractive, and fertile. The combinations, and the accompanying powers were amazing, branching out in every direction. But the offspring of two of the same element were terrifying in the magnitude of their power, some were even able to affect us, albeit momentarily. We had to step in and bound all fifty-seven nymphs’ powers to a physical representation of their element, or to the object their spirits inhabited before they were given bodiesp. For the earth elements, it was simple, based off their additional talents, we were able to pair them with trees, plants, rocks. The oldest child of earth and water is the keeper of the Himalayas, her powers and life protect the mountains, and they feed her. Within four generations the nymphs had diluted their powers by mating with humans, and were able to leave their representations behind, no longer bound to it, but made stronger by it. Of all the elements, fire was the hardest to tame, they are the most dangerous, the most unpredictable, . There has not been a nymph born in over ten thousand years that was strong enough to sway me, where is your fire nymph?” She asked Elaina, while smiling devilishly.
“Later, I promise, but for now I need to ask some personal questions that I would prefer my aunt didn’t hear... and it might make people to afraid to answer.” I used my head to indicate Theia’s gaze, which had been on my latte, to the mother and daughter, both stuck in a state of shock at being told the origins of their ancestors.
“Yes, well, I will see you tomorrow after your midday meal, try not to be late this time?” She sheepishly kissed my cheek as I nodded and disappeared in a shimmer. Elaina started laughing, hard. tears rolling down her cheeks as she clung to the breakfast bar so she wouldn’t fall off her stool, while Evy remained frozen, although she had squeaked a couple of times.
“I feel like I should offer you a drink, but I’m not sure where Daniel keeps it, I keep meaning to ask for a tour, but we usually get distracted...” I chuckled awkwardly. I saw his office door silently open a crack, and a bottle of scotch was placed on the floor. Trying not to laugh, I acted like I had a thought. “Wait a minute!” I nodded, desperately trying not to giggle, I ran and grabbed the bottle. “Smartass!” I hissed through the door.
“Shh, Elaina hasn’t heard me yet, but that doesn’t mean she won’t.” He purred through the link, I could almost feel his lips on my neck, and his hands moving over my body, it was enough to make me soak my panties. I hurried back to the kitchen, when a thought occurred to me.
“You don’t think it’s Elaina or Evy... do you?” I asked Daniel through the link.
“No, but I don’t want to worry them, or for this to get out to the pack before we know more.” Daniel replied softly while I poured each woman a large serving.
“You okay? Your cheeks are red.” Elaina asked as she wiped away her tears.
“I’m fine.” I tried to deflect attention. “How are things with Warren?”
“We found an apartment we like in the city, and a house here on pack grounds. I guess the apartment is going to have to do for now.” She sniffed, wiping her face and taking a large gulp of the alcohol.
“It’s not forever, we will find a way around the elders.” I promised with a squeeze of her hand. Evy, as if coming to her senses, snapped out of her trance to comfort her daughter, stroking her hair gently.
“What about you Luna? Your email was a little sparse on details, why did you ask to see us today?” Evy asked, but her eyes never left her daughter.
“Relationship problems?” I blushed, and both women looked at me with matching quizzical looks. “I’ve been having a hard time thinking of ways to get around my lack of a wolf... and I thought maybe the pack members in the same boat had some ideas for me.” I explained.
“Oh...” The women said in unison, before Elaina blanched. “I don’t want to hear about you and dad’s sex life.” She started shaking her head at her mother.
“No, I mean like the run, the lover's song, stuff like that...” I tried to reassure her. “Daniel’s wolf-”
“No, don’t tell them about that.” Daniel interrupted me through the link, and I had to cover, but I had no clue of what to say. “Tell them my wolf side is getting restless.” He prompted.
“His wolf... is feeling restless, and we think it could be because we haven’t had a moment to do any of the wolf mating rituals.” I accidentally called them by the name used in the Fae books Hyacinth had lent me, but neither woman reacted, as they thought it over.
“When I was pregnant with Gabe, your father and his wolf were terrified something was going to happen to us. Every night, he would light a fire, and pile up a mountain of pillows from all over the house on the floor, for me to sit on.” Evy laughed. “Once I was comfortable, and he had brought me a glass of milk and some cookies, my ultimate craving, he would shift. His wolf would curl up around me, and I would scratch his ears by the fire. It was the only thing that calmed them both so we could sleep.” She laughed again. “Of course, we also moved the sofa into the nursery to make space.” I couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped my lips at that, and I felt a strange wistfulness from Daniel as he pictured us doing the same thing, unknowingly showing me exactly what he was imagining.
“That might be difficult with the enormous couch in the living room... but he does fit at the end of our bed... or is that too pet dog like?” I asked Elaina without thinking, I couldn’t imagine any wolf taking a request to lie at the foot of someone’s bed well. Would it be equating their animalistic side to just a creature incapable of higher reasoning?
“I mean...” There was a long pause as Elaina contemplated her answer. “Okay, if the only place my wolf fits in Warren’s apartment is the foot of his bed... and it might be if I’m honest. But if he is sat with me, and giving my wolf affection, then I wouldn’t be mad. If he expected me to sleep there while he was in the bed, we would have a fight that ended with me in the bed and him on the couch.” Elaina reasoned, and I felt a little less apprehensive about facing Daniel when everyone had left.
“Okay, any other tips you can give me?” I asked hopefully, but a knock at the door cut them off before they could answer.
