Chapter 86
I took Hyacinth through my dream three times, I told her the exact colour of the sky, the ground, the shape of the valley, the shapes and colour of the dead trees, and an exact description of the creatures chasing them. She even wanted to know what everyone was wearing! She had me describe the violet-eyed woman, in excruciating detail, I panicked slightly when she had me repeat what I had been told. But she was happy with just knowing what I was told to tell Daniel, waving her hands in frustration if I mentioned anything she deemed unimportant.
“I have seen snippets of this future in some of my people's eyes, but never long enough to get any important information. Something has yet to be decided, and I don’t think it has anything to them, I think it has something to do with you, the both of you will choose whether we fight this war or another one. Because there is a war coming, how devastating the fallout will be, you will choose.” She said as she stared out of the window at the townspeople milling around just outside the ivy-covered stone walls of her cottage. Daniel and I exchanged a glance in fear and confusion.
“Are you saying the war is inevitable? I thought that if we stop what’s happening the future will change?” Daniel asked as he tried to suppress his temper.
“The coups, taking the packs and covens, is just the first battle. Win, and things won't be nearly as bad as they will be if you lose.” Hyacinth said quietly, her eyes teared up, as she looked back at us. “So, we had better do all we can to make sure you win, starting with trusting the other Alphas.” She said she sniffed and wiped her eyes on a lace-trimmed handkerchief. “And that is why I reached out to them and invited them here; we all need to work together on this.” I saw Daniel pale as his eyes darted, from Hyacinth to me.
“The Alphas are coming here? All of them? Even Eric Whitehead?” He asked, his voice becoming frantic.
“We couldn’t possibly house every Alpha Daniel. There are hundreds all over the world, thousands maybe.” Hyacinth responded with a chuckle.
“So, which Alphas are coming Hyacinth!?” Daniel asked as anger crept into his voice.
“The ones from your state darling boy, that’s all. Once you have secured your state, you and the other packs will travel across America to ensure the rest win. I have it on good authority that whatever their endgame, your state is the first step, possibly because yours has the right balance of a small number of packs, but a large number of wolves.” She said almost to herself, her eyes unfocused for a moment, before she snapped out of it. “We will handle the European packs obviously.” She muttered.
“And who or what exactly told you this?” Daniel snapped, I could tell he was livid, he had hoped I wouldn’t be anywhere near Alpha Eric Whitehead, but I could see the fear in his eyes too.
“The goddess that created us all my darling, the one that gave me my powers, and your ability to shift. I had a vision, a wolf, I don’t know who, will confess it to you, I do know the wolf is part vampire, and it will be a taunt if you fail to protect the other packs.” Hyacinth declared as she stared into space and fidgeted with her fingers.
“You should have told me Hyacinth, I don’t want that man around Charlie, or to know anything about her visions.” Daniel stood and began pacing, obviously upset. “That’s why I told you about me saying you were the one to have the vision, so he never finds out about her. You don’t know what he’s like. He’s dangerous Hyacinth, you’ve put Charlie in danger.” I dashed around the table; he was becoming more and more frantic. I gripped his arms, to get him to stay still.
“Shh, it’s okay, Daniel. I’ll be okay.” I forced him to look at me, he wrapped his arms around me, he ran his nose along my neck, and his breathing slowed.
“I have arranged for each Alpha to stay at a different hotel, everyone has accepted my invitation and will be here Friday,” Hyacinth said a little put out by Daniel’s reaction. “That gives us three days to come up with a game plan and find out as much as we can about your lineage my dear.” She said as she stood, she made her way towards me without breaking eye contact. She stopped inches away from me, and just stared, before gliding out of the room, leaving us alone in the parlour. Dermot came in a few seconds after Hyacinth left, his face fell when he saw Daniel.
“I have a bad feeling.” He said before he followed Daniel who pulled me along with him as he stormed, wordlessly out of the house.
“Daniel, calm down, Hyacinth didn’t say anything about telling Alpha Whitehead about me, and I can stay in the hotel until he leaves, or with Dermot, or I could go home?” I suggested, hoping to calm him down.
“She should’ve never let me bring you here!” He screamed, before sighing and turning towards the car, and back to me, he looked lost and overwhelmed. “You are going nowhere without me, I’m not sending you home, and you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s too far away if something happens. Dermot, I wouldn’t ask, but you’re the only one I trust, and if something were to happen, I need to know she would be safe. I need you to protect her, like she was your own daughter, or I will have to kill Eric Whitehead before he gets a chance to find out about her, you understand?” Daniel begged Dermot, he was almost manic in his fear, as he gripped Dermot’s shirt.
“Of course, I may not be as powerful as Hyacinth, but even I can see, your girl here, she’s destined for great things, protecting her will be the same as protecting my entire family. I swear to you, I will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.” Dermot vowed, he clasped Daniel’s hand in his and touched it to his forehead, then heart, in a ritual of some kind, Daniel repeated the action.
“I swear, whatever happens if your family needs me, or my descendants, we will be there,” Daniel vowed before he hugged Dermot and sagged in relief. Without another word the two men moved apart, towards the car, Daniel held the door open for me, and silently, I got in. We left the grounds of Hyacinth’s cottage, no one said anything for the entire ride to the hotel, the mood in the car was solemn.
“I’ll be back in the morning, get some sleep,” Dermot said after he helped us unload our bags before he drove off.
“What was that?” I asked the moment we were alone.
“Not here.” Was all Daniel said, as he picked up everything but my carry-on and marched into the hotel, and up to the reception desk. Leaving me confused, and to trail behind him. “Hello, I believe I have a reservation under the name Daniel Rose.” I snickered and looked at him like he was crazy.
“Right here Mr Rose, I just need a form of ID and a credit card.” The woman behind the desk smiled, it irked me, she was flirting, in front of me. Daniel handed over his card and passport, he gave her a small, forced smile. “There we are, you’re all checked in and would you like help with your bags?” She breathed like she would like nothing more than to show him to the room herself, I scoffed, getting annoyed.
“No, thank you, I just want to get to our room as soon as possible,” Daniel replied, he put his arm around me and kissed my cheek, I didn’t know if he was oblivious or intentionally messing with her. She bristled slightly, before handing him the keycards to our room, he thanked her, handed them to me, before he picked up our luggage, and headed for the elevators. We remained silent, as we walked to our room, I was mesmerised by the beauty of the hotel, while Daniel seemed preoccupied with his own thoughts. I was admiring the marble floors and tall decorated ceilings, the opulent grand staircase and the sparkling chandelier, we got to our suite, and I was stunned. The king-sized bed was made out of dark wood, the whole room looked rich, warm and comforting, and I couldn’t wait to have breakfast with Daniel in the high-backed chairs by the window. Daniel placed our bags by the foot of the bed, he moved into the room, ran his hand down his face, and sighed, almost like he was resolved to do something he didn’t want to.
“Okay, so what Dermot and I did, that was The Oath, it binds us, and our families, so we will fight for the other like they were our own... Essentially, pledging our children and grandchildren to Dermot's, it's unbreakable, and forever. Hyacinth is serious about protecting her people, anyone invited to come see her is given a name to sign in with at the hotel of her choice. Mine is Rose, for whatever reason, you never know with that woman.” He said with a scowl.
“What do you mean it binds us? I don’t understand.” I replied.
“Not you, but me, and anyone who is born from my bloodline... and it means after Dermot has kept his end of the oath our family will be obligated to aid his, in whatever they need.” He said as he sat down on the bed, tiredly. “I can’t be in a room with that man without knowing I did everything in my power to keep you safe from him.” I sat next to him on the bed and took his hand.
“What did he do to make you distrust him so much?” I asked softly, as I tried to understand his point of view.
