Chapter 82

Daniel POV

I felt the moment Charlie drifted off next to me, her head on my chest, her tiny frame moved slowly with her breath. I stared at the ceiling, praying to the goddess that Hyacinth would be able to help her because as much as I hated to admit it even to myself, if she couldn’t find a way to control her powers soon, we would have no choice but to leave the pack. As their leader, I had to ensure their safety, even if that meant protecting them from my mate. I took a deep breath and allowed her scent to calm me, the stress I was feeling melting away as the heady aroma flooded my system and allowed me to relax for the first time that day. I closed my eyes, ready to finally sleep and end what felt like an extremely long day when I felt Charlie sit up.
“Something wrong baby? I thought you were asleep.” I asked as I stifled a yawn.
“Vampires are agents of destruction and chaos, do not trust anything Matthew Pratt tells you; he is a child of deception, you will find no answers there.” A female voice that did not belong to Charlie stated. I jumped out of bed, prepared to defend us if necessary.
“Why should I believe you?” I asked, my eyes searched the room for the source of the voice.
“What are your instincts telling you?” She asked, almost with a laugh, and I realised, the voice was coming from Charlie. But my instincts weren’t telling me to fear her, instead, something within me trusted the woman, whatever she was. “I mean you no harm Alpha, I need you for the coming war. You have been entrusted to keep Charlie safe, until the final battle.” For the first time, I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
“What happens in the final battle?” I asked, as a pit opened in my stomach.
“Either she will be victorious, or he will.” The voice said, infuriating me.
“Who is he?” I growled, threateningly.
“He calls himself the King of the Vampires, but he is so much more.” The voice said before it disappeared back wherever it came from, leaving Charlie frozen her eyes that strange purple colour. I ran to her to make sure she was alright, her body still frozen in the same position.
“Wake up Charlie! Wake up baby please?” I begged her, terrified she wouldn’t come back to me.
“What happened?” Her melodious voice asked me, I felt my whole body exhale, and relief flooded through me.
“Your eyes were purple, and something was speaking through you like you were gone, I’m so glad you’re alright.” I sighed, as I pulled her into my arms.
“Something spoke through me?” She asked confused.
“Yeah, your mouth was moving, but it wasn’t your voice.” I replied, my heart rate began to return to normal.
“Do you think? I mean... could it have been the woman from my dream? The one with the purple eyes?” She asked nervously.
“Maybe, I didn’t feel any danger from her, I think whoever it was that spoke through you, just wanted to warn us,” I replied, I kissed her softly.
“Warn us about what?” She asked, her tiny body trembled against mine.
“The King of the Vampires, Pratt, the coming battles,” I whispered as I held her tighter.
“Oh... okay.” She breathed, she leaned into me as the tension left her.
“Did you see her at all?” I asked, gently nudging her along.
“Yes, she said vampires are beings of destruction, whatever that means,” Charlie grumbled and wrapped her arms around me.
“Is that all she said?” I asked, I knew she was holding something back.
“That and that the future isn’t set yet, we still have time to change it.” She got quiet but I could feel there was more, something she wasn’t ready to talk about. “She showed me the meadow and the house... what happens to it all if we don’t change the future.” I squeezed her tighter, attempting to comfort her, whatever she saw must have freaked her out.
“Let’s try and get some sleep, we can sort everything else out in the morning,” I suggested, lifting her and moving us both further into the bed.
“Could you just hold me for a little longer?” She asked as I adjusted my position.
“Anything you want baby,” I replied, as I pulled her back against me, and settled down to finally sleep. Her breathing slowed, and her body sagged against me, the exhaustion allowed her to quickly drift off to sleep. I kissed her hair and closed my own eyes; sleep took me almost instantly.

The next morning, I woke in the same position, my muscles stiff from lack of movement, Charlie’s head still on my chest, and her tiny body moved with each breath. I gently shifted her back onto the pillows and got up to stretch my muscles. My wolf was restless, I’d had little time to let him out, and his urge to mark Charlie made him more difficult to control. I glanced at the clock, it was still early, so I made up my mind, I left her a quick note and crept out of the room. I didn’t bother to grab any clothes, I walked through the house in my underwear, towards the back door. With the increased border and grounds patrols, I figured a quick run through the woods at the back of the house was my best chance of being alone. I stepped out of the house, the air was damp and cold, a faint mist had settled over the ground, and the darkness was still imposing. Although the first glimpses of sunlight would be streaking through the sky soon. I took a deep inhale, relishing the crisp, clean fall air, and made my way to the tree line. I threw my underwear over a branch and shifted, I loved feeling the cold air in my fur and the hard soil under my paws, I gave over control to my wolf. He glanced back at the house, and Charlie, his focus split, he was itching for a run, but his mate was alone, and unmarked. I nudged us along further up the incline, into the woods, I hoped he would take the hint and start running, eventually and not without a grumble, directed at me, he took off. I had barely got my blood pumping, when something smelled wrong, it was a scent I didn’t recognise, which had me on alert.
“Ben? Alex? Robert? Theo?” I linked my brother, the Delta and the men in charge of the patrols.
“Yes, Alpha.” They all replied immediately, despite the hour, it filled me with pride.
“There’s a scent I don’t recognise in the woods behind the estate, approximately half a mile away from the house, heading east. I want a squad here ASAP to track it. I leave this evening; I want a report before then.” I instructed.
“Yes, Alpha.” They all replied again, I cut the link and sniffed around, I was searching for any clues of who or what was trespassing on our lands. The scent seemed strongest at a group of sturdy and large pine trees; I sniffed around a little more while I waited for the men to find me. Something inside me told me to look closer at the trees, there had to be a reason the scent was strongest there. I circled the trees, finding nothing on the ground, before I moved back so I could see higher up. That’s when I spotted it, a branch about halfway up, the twigs around it had been broken, clearing the view of the pack house. My blood ran cold as I began to understand the implications of what I had found, someone was watching us, they could be after Charlie. I linked the men back immediately.
“Where are you? Someone has been watching the house and I left Charlie there alone. I want the patrol guarding the grounds questioned, and someone you trust sent to the house to guard it immediately!” I snapped, I almost let my wolf’s desire to run back to the house and to her overpower me.
“I’m two minutes away.” Ben’s voice interrupted my thoughts, as I heard the squad approaching.
“Keep her safe.” Was all I could say to him before the squad found me, they bowed their heads and sniffed the ground. “I think someone, or something has been climbing this tree to watch the pack house. The twigs and branches have been cleared to provide a better view, but they haven’t been left on the ground, suggesting whoever has been up there didn’t want to be found, and could have been watching us for goddess knows how long.” I growled, unhappy that we had a gap in our defences.
“With all respect Alpha, it is unlikely anyone has been here long. My squad searched these woods only three days ago as part of an exercise.” The iota of the group, Taylor I think his name was, eagerly offered.
“I have to agree Alpha, we did a sweep of these woods just yesterday, and even if the trainees missed this scent, which I doubt, we would have picked it up. I believe whoever it was that was here, only came last night. How they got through the border patrol, I don’t know.” Robert, our lead trainer added.
“I want to know where this scent ends, I want to know where they went, and I want the border patrols tightened up. There is a chance this is a vampire and they teleported, they don’t smell like a Lycan, but until we know for sure I don’t want a fly getting in unnoticed, am I clear?” I asked, the Delta, he nodded as did the others, before they began tracking the intruder.
“I’m here, and so is she, she’s safe Daniel.” Ben’s voice broke through the stream of things I was thinking, it allowed me to finally take a deep breath and calm down. I oversaw the investigation for a few more minutes, before I left the warriors to do their work and ran back to Charlie.
