In The Beginning, Chapter 69
“Charlie! Stop!” He pulled me towards the nearest bonfire without anyone around it, until the roar of the fames could drown out our voices. “Don’t be embarrassed, you put me in my place, like a true Luna.” He breathed against my knuckles as he kissed them softly. “Do you have any idea how hot it is when you tell me off?” He chuckled softly as the heat on my cheeks intensified. “How proud it makes me feel when you defend, and fight for the pack?” He asked as he pulled my body against his, until his erection was undeniable. “If the woods weren’t crawling with wolves, you would be screaming my name by now, letting every pack member know how much you love being fucked, hard and rough.” His hands actually trembled a little as they moved up my spine. “How wet you get for me...” His hot breath on my cheek as he whispered in my ear made me breathless with need. “How fucking incredible it feels to be inside you...” His lips captured mine as his hands moved into my hair, pulling me closer, his tongue ran along my bottom lip, before he nibbled on it. I moaned at the sharp sensation, and his tongue invaded my mouth, dominating me and my tongue.
“Oh, get a room!” Miranda’s voice brought a blush to my cheeks for a completely different reason as I struggled to extract myself from Daniel’s constrictor-like grip. “Why aren’t you on the run?” Miranda demanded.
“Charlie was attacked again today. My place is beside her.” Daniel wearily sighed but smiled when he turned back to me.
“I understand your concern son, especially after recent events with your mother.” Richard added, placing a protective arm around Miranda. “But the new wolves need to feel welcomed, especially by their Alpha. Charlie is safe with us.” Daniel looked at me, then the woods.
“Straight to the house if-”
“If there is even a hint of trouble, and I will link you immediately so you can get the patrol to me.” I finished nodding, and gently pushing him towards the treeline. “Just... don’t get naked out here!” I pulled him back slightly, he chuckled, and planted a kiss on my lips before running off. I turned, a little pink cheeked to Richard and Miranda, unsure of what to say.
“You suggested the same thing?” Miranda asked when it was clear Daniel wouldn’t hear, unsure of what she was asking I frowned. “You told Daniel you would be fine here, if he wanted to join the pack?” She asked with an eye roll, but her tone gave away nothing, I had no idea what she was thinking or feeling.
“Yes, I told him he should go.” I replied, also refusing to give her anything, until I knew what I was stepping into anyway.
“Hmm.” Was all she said, and I felt like screaming at her in frustration, or at the very least mess up her hair, which was in its usual up do. “Maybe you do have what it takes to be Luna.” She said enigmatically. I didn’t get the chance to ask her meaning though, as Ben and Maria returned with four mountains of food. Behind them Kathy and Annie led two teenage boys who were carrying a fold-out table, while the women had platters of food in each hand.
“Are you eating here Luna?” Kathy asked with a smile, cursing Daniel for not prepping me better I glanced at Miranda for help.
“Well, I’m not climbing onto that podium, it’s too far on this uneven ground.” She sniffed, looking at the floor with distain.
“I don’t mind staying here, up on the stage would be so removed. Wouldn’t staying among the pack be more in tune with the event?” I asked, before I could stop myself, Richard beamed at me, while Miranda just smirked, which I still couldn’t decipher.
“Yeah, here’s good.” Ben agreed through a mouthful of meat. The table was set up, the food placed on it, and chairs and even more plates added. Everyone took their seats at the table, leaving the head free for Daniel. I began looking at the various dishes when I felt eyes on me.
“What?” I asked when I looked up to see everyone watching me.
“Tradition says that when the Alpha isn’t present, no pack wolf may eat before the Luna, it’s a respect thing.” Ben shrugged, but his eyes trailed to the various dishes littering the table.
“But you were already eating!” I accused, the grease smears around his mouth proving my point to everyone.
“No, that was pre-meal sampling, perfectly acceptable as the table was not set up.” Ben argued like he was defending his point in court. I giggled at his logic but started filling my plate and Daniel’s with everything I could reach, before a complicated and at times clumsy dance of passing around the many dishes began until even with only putting half a serving on my plate, I was running out of room. I had resorted to piling Daniel’s plate up until a serving dish was emptied, then I just started using that instead, until he had a veritable feast to return to, before finally tasting the delicious smelling food. Once I began everyone tucked in with enthusiasm, and for several minutes none of us spoke as we tasted all the different meats and sides. I bit into a jalapeno popper, and almost moaned in appreciation, it had been fried in breadcrumbs, stuffed with cream cheese, spinach and bacon, but it was the hint of lemon in the filling that had me pause to truly appreciate the incredible flavour combinations. I was completely absorbed in trying to identify every last flavour I could when I heard Daniel’s voice in my mind.
“You had better be eating!” His gruff tone tried to convey annoyance, but I could hear the smile in his voice.
“If you don’t get back soon, I can’t guarantee there will be anything left for you. This jalapeno popper nearly made me come it’s so good.” I replied, and I heard his dark chuckle ripple through me.
“I might just have to start with desert.” His voice felt like it was scorching my skin with his inference.
“Behave.” I laughed, and I could feel my grin spreading across my face.
“I’ll be back soon, and if there is no food left for me, I’m taking a bite out of you.” He threatened, before closing the link. My whole body felt too hot, I released my powers hoping the cold air would help but being so close to the bonfire I didn’t find much relief. I unbuttoned my coat and removed my scarf in an attempt to cool down.
“You, okay? You look a little flushed.” Maria asked me, looking at my pink cheeks with concern.
“No, I’m fine.” I tried to insist nonchalantly.
“Good then you can talk about the engagement party, Luna ceremony and wedding.” Miranda said with a smile that seemed less excited mother of the groom, and more cat that had cornered a mouse.
“Well, I trust your taste Miranda, so I will leave the engagement party completely in your control. Daniel and I haven’t had a chance to talk about the Luna ceremony yet, so I don’t know what I want, other than we were thinking of having it on the Spring Equinox. Daniel said it's an important day...” I trailed off under Miranda’s penetrating glare. “What now?” I huffed, annoyed.
“The Spring Equinox is a good idea... but the winter would be better. There is no more auspicious day to have one’s Luna ceremony, than Luna’s Day.” She stated, and I felt like an idiot for not piecing that together.
“Did you have your Luna ceremony on the Winter Equinox?” I asked, although I suspected the answer.
“No. We felt, after such a strained acceptance of me, to wait a little. Mine was after the Spring Equinox.” Miranda said surprising me as she focused on her plate, and I saw the first crack in her seemingly impenetrable armour.
“I think the Winter Equinox would be wonderful for a Luna ceremony, I just wish it wasn’t over a year away.” I replied, if a Luna ceremony was anything like a wedding it would take a long time to organise, but I knew Daniel wanted the ceremony sooner rather than later.
“Well, yes. I suppose it would be nearly impossible to invite everyone and plan the ceremony in two weeks... Think about waiting until next year, at least? As for the engagement party, if you think allowing me to throw a small party will appease me enough for you and Daniel to go to the courthouse you have another thing coming.” She drawled, and I nearly spat out my beer in surprise.
“What? NO! We just thought if you had something to focus on, we could work out what we want before you decide for us. But a courthouse wedding has never been discussed... Does Daniel not want a big wedding?” I asked suddenly unsure. I didn’t want anything massive, just some friends and family, and probably the pack... then there would be other Alphas and creatures, dignitaries from other races. I started to feel a little panicked as the realisation that our wedding could spiral out of control hit me hard.
“Daniel wants whatever you want. If you want the whole world at your wedding Daniel would make it happen, he just wants to marry you, he doesn’t care how.” Maria butted in, looking between me and Miranda with an annoyed look. “You want to have a small wedding with just a handful of people, he will understand. The pack can come to the reception, that’s what we did.” She waved a hand between herself and Ben. “You don’t have to decide anything tonight. So, eat up, your food is getting cold.” I looked at my plate, jalapeno popper still in hand, I hadn’t taken another bite since.
“I agree with your Beta, why aren’t you eating?” Daniel’s rough voice hit my ear a moment before his breath did as he snuck up behind me.
“We were just talking...” I tried to brush off his concern, but my stomach was clenching painfully with anxiety. He examined my face slowly for a moment before taking the jalapeno popper out of my hand and dropping it on the plate. He silently grabbed my hand and walked us to the treeline away from everyone. He made a little howling noise in his throat, and four wolves answered, but the sounded like they were moving away as we stepped behind the trees.
