Chapter 60
“But... why?” I asked completely dumbfounded.
“Well, from what I’ve heard, one of the security team at Appletree almost got into a fistfight with another person on the team when they attempted to sway him using you as the reason Daniel shouldn’t rule. Several of the assistants and secretaries were adamant you could never be anything but good for this pack and turned the tide so there are only a few still on Pratt and Owen’s side. And the household staff? I have it on good authority several pack members had a severe talking to for just insinuating you would be anything but an amazing Luna.” Ben informed us, still grinning crazily. Daniel kept massaging my shoulders in encouragement.
“But... I don’t understand! Who...? Oh my god!” I suddenly realised, who had helped fight for me. “Kendra? And Elaina?” I asked, surprised and touched. “Oh, and Kyle?”
“Who’s Kyle?” Daniel suddenly asked from behind me.
“Kyle Henry, he was a security guard I met on my first day, he checked my ID. He was sweet and kind, and he is the only one I can think of on the security team I had an interaction with that wasn’t me getting my ID.” I laughed, moved by him sticking up for me. “He’s just a kid, but I can’t imagine him punching someone over me.” I turned to Ben, hoping he had more information, while Daniel growled lowly. I swatted his hand, telling him off for being silly.
“Umm, yes, the two Etas who fought were Kyle Henry and ah, Tyler Pratt, Matthew Pratt’s cousin.” Ben read off a report, causing more growls and grumbles from Daniel. I rubbed his arms gently, to calm him down.
“Yes, yes this is all lovely, but we need to move on with business and get a plan together before we can start tribunal prep,” Miranda said with a dismissive wave of her hand.
“Okay, so what’s the plan?” I asked Ben, I wanted to get the whole day over with.
“Well, I agree with Dad, I think we should weed out the elders involved with the coup before we arrest Owen and Pratt,” Ben said with a decisive nod.
“Okay, what about the other Alphas?” I asked turning to look at Daniel and I realised he had completely forgotten to check his emails. He blushed, pulling his phone out of his pocket.
“I’ve received emails from Lander and Kasa, but nothing from Eric Whitehead.”
“Okay, so what do we tell them?” I asked, uncertain of how to proceed.
“I don’t want to expose Charlie’s visions to anyone outside this room yet. I would prefer we say Hyacinth got in touch, that she was the one who saw the vision and warned us. That I’m travelling to her to get more information and ask them to come here for a meeting, or that we meet on neutral ground. I can explain how we have rooted out the perpetrators here and offer them assistance in finding the wolves in league with the vampires within their own packs. Any objections?” Daniel asked.
“Do we really want to lie to people who we are asking to trust us?” I asked, I wasn’t sure that telling people about whatever was going on with me either but lying felt wrong.
“I don’t think you understand how valuable someone with visions like yours would be, I may trust Lander and Kasa, but Eric Whitehead? He’s trouble, he’s arrogant and has a chip on his shoulder, it wouldn’t be a good idea to say anything about you just yet. That’s if Kasa can convince him to come to the table.” Ben replied, his face full of concern for me.
“Why don’t you trust Eric Whitehead?” I asked, I heard Daniel take a deep breath behind me, he sat down for the first time, clutching my hand.
“Because his father was killed by my grandfather. He is my mother’s cousin; his father was the one that tried to take over our pack.” Daniel said gently.
“His mother was sent back to her birth pack after the war, and he became the Alpha?” I asked as I tried to figure out how that worked.
“His uncle was Alpha, the son inherited the pack, but didn’t have any siblings or children. Eric was the next in line, but it wasn’t an easy transition, Eric always felt he was born to lead but then had to fight for his right to rule his mother’s birth pack. He has been difficult to deal with ever since.” Daniel explained.
“And that’s why we don’t want to tell him about you, that and the fact that he also hasn’t found his mate. He could react badly to Daniel mating someone with powers like yours.” Richard softly reinforced the point.
“Okay, so are you thinking that fairy-tale thing might happen and you’re freaking out? Which could be an overreaction on your part, because you are crazy overprotective, right? You don’t really think he will kidnap me and mark me against my will, right?” I asked the table, the smile slipping from my face as I saw their refusal to meet my eye or say anything. “Okay, now I’m freaking out then. I’m going to panic a little now. Do I have to be there? Meet this person who may or may not kidnap me if he finds out I’m... whatever the hell I am?” I asked Daniel, as fear overwhelmed me.
“No. No, I will have you stay at Maria and Ben’s, or here with the pack warriors to protect you depending on where the meeting is held.” Daniel tried to soothe me.
“So that’s going to be my life until you mark me?” I asked incredulously.
“Alright, too much info, you’re freaking her out! Charlie just breathe and come with me, come on. They can plan whatever and us girls will go upstairs and pick an outfit, okay?” Maria soothed and attempted to move Miranda so she could lead us all out of the room.
“You mean pick an outfit for my trial which is probably going to end in my banishment so any one of God knows how many Alphas can kidnap me and use me for my magic dream visions!?” I was in full-on panic mode, hyperventilating and shaking with fear. Suddenly a hand collided with my face, hard, shocking me out of my anxiety attack. Everyone froze for a second, then all hell broke loose. I felt a surge of energy burst out of me, it was just like the dream I had with the violet-eyed woman, only more intense and powerful. Miranda was thrown clear across the room, the dining table was upended, and Daniel, Richard and Ben were all pinned against the wall by an invisible force. Maria was knocked to the ground, but it didn’t seem as violent as everyone else’s reactions. I looked up from Maria, only to see Miranda frozen in mid-air like she was suspended in time. I could hear Daniel snarling, his fangs and claws extended, Ben and Richard looked frozen in shock. My body was pulsing and vibrating with such intensity I couldn’t move, the energy erupted from my chest and throughout my body. I tried to reign in the power, pull it back inside me, I imagined it as something I could hold and see, drawing it back to me. And then I saw black.
I woke to Daniel’s hands on my body, checking me for wounds or injuries, I could hear arguing and yelling but I couldn’t make sense of anything, my head throbbed painfully, and my body was aching. I tried to sit up and ask what had happened, but my throat was dry. I was lying on the couch, Daniel was kneeling next to me, his eyes were flickering between his beautiful chocolate brown and the glowing Amber of his wolf. “What happened?” I managed to choke out, Daniel almost sobbed with relief, and Maria ran to my side.
“Are you alright?” She asked me, her lovely face twisted in concern. I managed to nod, but my eyes never left Daniel’s.
“My mother slapped you.” He growled, and his hand stroked my cheek gently, I vaguely remembered a stinging sensation, but not much else. I managed a weak smile, more to reassure him than anything else. Maria disappeared from beside me, she reappeared a few moments later with a glass of water. I drank greedily, my parched throat eager for relief. I could hear Miranda’s yells coming from the kitchen.
“I had to do something she was hysterical! My mother had panic attacks and that’s how my father would ground her!” I could hear her screaming at someone. I looked at Daniel and Maria with a furrowed brow.
“What is going on? What happened?” I asked again, my head felt fuzzy like I hadn’t slept in a long time.
“You emitted some sort of energy. It pinned my father, Ben and me against the wall, Maria was forced to her knees, but you didn’t hurt her, or us. My mother, however, was suspended in mid-air, like a bug in amber, your powers are growing and increasing, we can’t let anyone know about this and you will have to stay calm tonight at the tribunal, ensure this doesn’t happen again. As for my mother, it is up to you how she is punished.” Daniel gritted out the last part through his teeth, he was obviously furious and struggling to stay calm. “Then all of a sudden we were all released, and you collapsed.” He said brushing my hair behind my ear, his eyes searched mine, but I wasn’t sure what for.
