In The Beginning, Chapter 85

Charlie POV

I was sat in the bedroom, wrapping a gift for Daniel for Luna’s Day, a vinyl record, My Generation by The Who. He had mentioned the one he had as a kid was destroyed in an accident, but it was hard to find a replacement. Maria, Kendra and I had been searching for weeks for one, I didn’t think it was going to happen, but at the last minute, and for a sickening price, I had nabbed one for him. I had just finished hiding the now wrapped gift when I heard Daniel coming home.
“Hey, what do you want to do for food tonight?” I asked as I skipped down the stairs.
“I have to go deal with something. Do you mind ordering something? I’ll eat when I get back.” He sighed, coming out of his office with some papers and files, that he hastily stashed into a bag.
“Anything I can help with?” I asked, I could tell something was up, but I had no idea what, and he had been so stressed. I was trying not to push, give him time to open up, but it was driving me crazy.
“Not really but thank you for wanting to help.” He smiled and kissed my cheek as he moved through the house.
“You are going to tell me what’s happening, eventually, right?” I asked, a little nervous, he huffed dejectedly, before pausing and wrapping his arms around me.
“My mother and Hyacinth have been plotting again, and I need to go bite it in the ass, that’s all. I didn’t tell you because you have studying, and training and working too hard. I will not add to your plate with my family’s drama. Yours is more than anyone should have to cope with.” He explained with a soft kiss, making me chuckle.
“How can I not worry when I see how stressed you are? You leave our bed in the middle of the night, so I know you aren’t sleeping enough.” I pressed, running my thumbs over the dark circles appearing under his eyes. “How many times have you told me off for pushing myself with Theia, only for you to sneak out after you think I’ve fallen asleep, and sneak back in before my alarm sounds?”
“I only did that twice.” He admitted softly. “And I would’ve given anything to stay beside you.”
“I know that. I’m not asking you to tell me what’s going on if you’re not ready... I just want you to know I see it, and it’s worrying me.” I tried to explain.
“I’ll be back soon, I promise.” He ended the conversation with a kiss and headed back out the door. I sighed, frustrated, but headed for the library and the mountain of books I still had to read. Miranda had brought me a book of ceremonies in the Lycan religion, and I found myself re-reading it most nights, trying to picture myself participating in the rituals. When Daniel finally returned home, I had settled in on the couch with several books, the fire, and several Chinese food containers littering the coffee table. He slouched down on the couch beside me, letting out a tired sigh, and picking up the nearest container. He didn’t even look at it before he dug in, with the chopsticks I had left in it, his eyes half closed in his exhaustion.
“Please let me help?” I asked, completely accidentally, I firmly believe I was saying it in my head only. He growled softly, lowering the container slightly.
“There were a couple of attempts on the boarder, that’s why I left in the middle of the night. Some have been scouts, we think sent by the vampires. A couple have been wolves, who have heard about you, and have been trying to get to you for one reason or another. Most want you to bless them, return something, or someone they lost, but one or two had plans to abduct you, and I didn’t want you to be scared, but I’m scared for you, so I’m not sleeping very well.” He admitted, placing the container on the table, like he no longer had an appetite.
“You still have a patrol on the house?” I asked, trying to calm my heartrate and focus on the positives, no one had got in, they had all been caught... ‘But Daniel can’t continue without sleep.’ A voice whispered in my ear, like it was my fault.
“Yeah, and the Iotas have been added to the border patrols. No one is getting to you; you don’t have to worry.” He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Good, so tonight you can sleep. Because I’m not worried about someone getting to me, I’m worried about you not sleeping.” I said with a raise of my eyebrow, as I swing my leg over his lap to straddle him. “If I have to rest and look after myself, so do you.” I ordered, his lips tugged up into a genuine smile before he could stop it, his eyes lighting up with mischief.
“Or what?” He teased, and he called me a brat.
“Or I will tie you to the bed and refuse to release you until you have slept. Also, you aren’t getting any lovin’ until you’ve slept.” He chuckled, but his eyes betrayed his fear I wasn’t just teasing when I moved off him, grabbing one of the other containers and handing it too him. He was ready to argue until he looked down and saw it was Mongolian Beef and rice, his favourite, and began eating earnestly.
“So, what ’cha reading?” He asked, after he had emptied the container, and was reaching for a second, while pulling me so I was leaning against him and not the couch cushions. Making me laugh as he settled with the noodles and offering me bites between slurps.
“It’s another Diary, it was written by a nymph Luna, I like reading about how she used her powers in ceremonies and for the pack... It’s given me some ideas actually.” I turned to look at him, but he was asleep, his head lolling off the back of the couch, the noodles and box resting precariously on his leg. Not wanting to walk him, I moved the container to the table, and I grasped my powers. I focused on what I wanted and teleported us to the bed. I still have a ways to go when it comes to my subconscious however, because while we both appeared on our bed, our clothes remained in the living room. I slipped off of the bed, leaving Daniel now snoring softly and threw on some comfy pyjamas, before heading back to the living room to clean up.

I woke to my alarm screaming at me, unable to sleep after I had completed my bedtime routine, I had continued reading until far later than I should have, leaving me with a headache the shrill sound wasn’t helping. I tried to reach out for my phone to switch it off, but Daniel had completely encased my body with his during the night.
“Daniel!” I cried, attempting to nudge him off of me. “I need to get the alarm.” I grumbled, as his hold tightened. My words sinking in a few seconds later, when he reached over and dismissed it quickly, is morning erection pressed into the ass of my pants.
“Good morning.” He breathed against my skin as he ran his nose along my shoulder, his voice gruff with sleep and desire that made a shiver run through me.
“No, it’s a bad morning. And it’s too early.” I grumbled, pulling the covers over my head, making him laugh.
“Do you need caffeine?” He chuckled, his hand running up my body.
“No, I need more sleep, but coffee will have to do.” I groaned, wanting nothing more than to cocoon myself in the sheets and sleep the day away.
“Are you alright? Are you getting sick?” He asked, suddenly concerned, his hands began checking rather than caressing my body.
“No, I just didn’t sleep very well.” I replied, crawling out from under the covers as my full bladder was making it impossible to go back to sleep.
“When did you put on the sloth PJs!?” He cried indignantly, as I stumbled towards the bathroom, forcing me to cross my legs as I started giggling at him. They were nothing special, but my mother had bought them for me, they were a breathable yoga pant style, with an oversized sweatshirt with ‘I’m not sleepy, I’m part sloth’ written on it, and dozens of dozing cartoon sloths on the pants. The sweatshirt had a new tear in the seam along the shoulder from the first time Daniel had seen me in them.
“When you were getting some much-needed rest.” I teased as I closed the door, as had become our routine, I waited until I heard him leave the bedroom, before I could relieve myself. Having done what I needed to; I slipped back into the bed to wait for him. We had fallen into the habit of waking earlier to spend some time alone, after being disturbed three nights in a row by pack issues, and being left extremely frustrated, twice. I was clinging to the hope that we would get a peaceful Luna’s Day if nothing else when I had a thought. Daniel returned with two steaming cups, and a big grin when he saw me waiting, and still wearing the pyjamas. He came straight to my bedside, placing the cups down on the side table and taking my face in his hands, and kissed me deeply, making me want to whine in need. But when he pulled back his thumbs rubbed under my eyes softly, his brow getting concerned. “Oh, hell no. You don’t get to brush off my concerns about you being tired and then pull the same thing on me after one bad night.” I warned, brushing his hands away to pick up my latte.
“Was it because of... what I told you last night? Because no one has gotten anywhere near you, I promise, you’re-” I interrupted him, by covering his mouth, shaking my head.
“I was worried you were going to be called away again, that’s why I couldn’t sleep. Well, that and I was a little frustrated.” I admitted with a chuckle, trying to lighten the mood.
“I’m sorry it’s been so hard for me to make time for you.” He whispered.
“No, Daniel, I understand, I’m glad you got some rest.” I tried to explain, placing my cup down so I could put my arms around him. “I’m going to ask Hyacinth and Theia to help me put up a barrier, for Luna’s Day at least, so we can celebrate in peace. Without worrying about anything ruining it.”
“That’s going to take a lot of power, are you sure you’re ready for that?” He asked, I could feel his initial reaction was still that it was too dangerous, but he was trying. Hyacinth had tried, several times to create a barrier like she had over the sanctuary, but she had been too weak. The current barrier protecting the witches’ town was being powered by crystals Dermot’s daughters had to infuse with their magic regularly.
“That’s why I am going to ask them to help, but I think I can do it.” I answered, as he pressed his forehead to mine, expressing wordlessly his fear.
