Chapter 68
“Your face!” Was all I could manage to blubber as his bloodied hands stroked my hair.
“It will heal, there will barely be a mark there tomorrow, I promise.” He whispered; his chin rested on my head as he held me.
“Alpha, I should go help escort the prisoner, if I’m no longer needed.” I heard Kyle say behind me. I turned to look at him.
“Thank you for protecting me, Kyle, I mean Officer Henry,” I said between sniffles as the poor boy blushed again, unable to look me in the eye, his head bowed. I felt Daniel bristle behind me and growl lowly, I slapped the back of my hand into his chest, silently telling him off for being jealous.
“You may leave.” Was all Daniel said, I turned around, fully intending to give him a piece of my mind when his lips captured mine. His tongue tried to gain entry into my mouth, his hands lifted me and pulled me against his naked body.
“You’re naked,” I stated as a reminder when his lips moved down my neck. “And your parents are here.” I breathed; I knew he was lost in his desire. He grumbled, frustrated, but didn’t set me down. He pressed his face against my chest.
“I don’t like other men touching you.” He replied grumpily. I rolled my eyes, I knew that clarifying I was the one that grabbed Kyle, not the other way around wasn’t a good idea considering his mood. I put my hands on his face and gently moved it so he could look at me.
“Can we go home? Or do you need to go be the Alpha?” I asked softly.
“Tonight, I’m all yours.” He said with a smile, as he set me down. I looked around and realised, Richard, Miranda, Ben and Maria were the only ones left. Each couple were comforting themselves the way Daniel and I had been. Richard and Miranda were in the same position they were at the house, their foreheads pressed together, their hands entwined, silent and strangely intimate. Ben and Maria were kissing each other but it wasn’t passionate and lusty, it was soft and reassuring. Daniel positioned himself behind me, his erection pressing into my butt, I lowered my eyes, I had no intention of seeing a full frontal of my possible future brother and father-in-law. He cleared his throat to signal the couples we were still there. Ben immediately jumped behind Maria, which made me snort, I had no doubt he was experiencing the same side effect Daniel was and didn’t want the rest of us to see his reaction to his mate. Richard and Miranda raised their heads, but didn’t shift from their position, giving Daniel their attention without leaving the touch of the other.
“The Zeta has instructions to link me once Owen is in his cell. I’m going to take Charlie home, we will meet up tomorrow morning, then Ben and Dad, you are welcome to come with me to Owen’s interrogation.” He said through gritted teeth, I pulled his arms around me to comfort him, he was clearly furious with his uncle, and I didn’t blame him. Richard and Ben nodded their agreement but were interrupted by Miranda.
“What about us? Why aren’t we permitted to observe the interrogation? He threatened our lives too. Broke our trust too. Endangered the lives of the ones we love and our pack members too!” She snarled, outraged at being asked to stay behind.
“Charlie isn’t an official member of the pack yet, and I was hoping you and Maria would stay with her as she will not be permitted into the cells. I need you to protect her from the backlash Owen’s arrest could create.” Daniel said softly, but I could tell he was scared for me.
“Of course, I will stay with her, but I would suggest you post guards outside the house too, just in case,” Maria replied, mimicking my movements with Ben to keep him calm and reassured also.
“Charlie will have plenty of protection. I demand to be there when Owen is interrogated!” Miranda snapped.
“Fine, whatever you want Mother,” Daniel responded exasperated. “Be at the house at ten, we will have coffee before we head to the cells.” He said before he led me towards the door. I was horrified when I saw the deep angry slashes to his back, I hadn’t seen them immediately after the fight but for them to be so bad after several minutes, while his other injuries were almost healed, they must have been horrific. Daniel turned around, startled by my audible gasp. “What’s wrong? Are you alright?” He asked, his eyebrows furrowed with concern.
“Your back! It’s terrible, aren’t you in pain?” I asked, alarmed by his ignorance of his injuries. “We need to get you to a hospital now, Daniel!” I cried, shaken by the horrendous gashes to his body.
“No, it’s fine, I’m fine. Don’t worry, it will be healed by the time we get home, a hot shower and I’ll be right as rain, I promise.” He tried to reassure me.
“Daniel, you need stitches, possibly a blood transfusion, and antibiotics! You need to see a doctor!” I shrieked, panicking, a wound like that to a human would mean hospitalisation, and threaten their lives, Daniel was acting like it was a paper cut.
“Lycans rarely need stitches or blood transfusions, but if it will make you feel better, I will ask one of the pack doctors to meet us at the house, and take a look, okay?” He replied with a chuckle, which he abruptly stopped when he saw the look on my face. I was petrified, nauseated and shocked by his response. “I know it’s difficult to understand, but we heal very quickly, see?” He remarked, showing me a wound on his arm that was almost closed. “I will be fine, come on let’s go home, you need something to eat and drink, so you don’t pass out.” I nodded, but my brain felt numb, I could feel the wet material of my clothes clinging to me from the blood Daniel had inadvertently transferred to me when he was holding me. It increased the nausea I was feeling and made me feel lightheaded. He put his arm around me and steered me through the door. I felt like time wasn’t working properly, we were at the car before I had registered, that we had even left the building. Daniel buckled my belt and ran around the car, I was aware of him getting behind the wheel, and starting the car but I had no memory of him retrieving his keys. We pulled into the garage what felt like only minutes later, I felt disoriented and confused. Daniel rushed to my side of the car where I was sitting dazed, he unbuckled my belt and leaned in to lift me out of the car.
“No, you’re injured, you shouldn’t be carrying me!” I protested, as I pushed his arms away from me.
“I’m fine, but you look like you’re going to pass out. You have no colour and you’re still shaking a little. Let me carry you to the house, please?” He asked, he knelt in front of me. I took a deep breath, partly to calm myself because I was getting irrationally angry, and partly to help clear my foggy brain.
“I can walk, I’ll be alright, it’s you I’m worried about!” I grumbled as I tried to stand on my shaky legs. I wasn’t as sure footed as I thought I would be but managed to walk out of the garage unaided, huffing slightly in frustration. Daniel caught up to me quickly, he put his arm around my shoulders and pulled me towards him, it made me smile, despite my displeasure.
“Is it alright that I like that you worry about me?” He asked, I frowned and looked at him incredulously. “What?” He asked smiling. “It’s not alright that I like it?” I shook my head in frustration. “I worry about you too.” He said, suddenly very serious.
“I don’t like worrying about you, I don’t like seeing you fight, and I don’t like seeing you hurt!” I snapped, my emotions were all over the place, I still felt ill, and my thoughts felt disjointed and strange.
“I’m sorry you had to see that. I hope you never have to see anything like that again.” I nodded and allowed Daniel to lead me to the house in silence. “Would you like to shower or eat something first?” He asked as we rounded the corner to the front door.
“I don’t know.” Was all I could say, my mind still clouded and bewildered. He pulled me around, so we were facing each other.
“I think you’re in shock, you need some water and something to eat, maybe even a stiff drink. I’ll have the doctor look you over when they get here.” He stated firmly before he pulled me inside the house. It was late, the house should have been dark and deserted but the lights were on in the kitchen and the fire had been lit in the lounge. Daniel didn’t seem bothered by the open door or any of the other signs that someone was still there, but it scared me. He tried pulling me deeper into the house, but I shook my head firmly, looking at the fire. “Do you want to sit down? What’s wrong?” He asked, worried.
“There shouldn’t be anyone here!” I whispered, hoping I wouldn’t be heard by whoever was in the house. Daniel sighed relieved and wrapped his arms around me protectively.
“It’s Kathy, I asked her to stay behind when I found out about Owen’s plan and the rogues.” He whispered into my hair. “I wanted to make sure you had something decent to eat.” He shrugged like it was the most natural thing in the world. I couldn’t help but laugh, but I soon found I couldn’t stop, the stress and anxiety and fear of the day poured out of me in hysterical, crying laughter.
“Yeah, definitely shock,” Daniel commented, almost to himself as I doubled over, my laughter increased at his reaction.
