In The Beginning, Chapter 129

Ethan gave the man a shot of something, before pulling a bottle out of his bag, and pouring it over the Zeta’s face, starting with his eyes. The blood washed away quickly, the man blinked a few times lazily, like he couldn’t focus.
“Okay, deep breath in for me?” Ethan encouraged, the man groaned in response, and the water was poured over his nose and mouth. Pausing for Ethan to stick a tube between his lips and suction out whatever was in his mouth. “There you go... oh! Seems you nearly swallowed some teeth, never mind, we will find out if you ingested any later.” He tried to comfort the man, but I doubt he would remember any of it, his eyes were still unfocused, his lids half closed. “I’m gonna take him back with me, get a couple of x-rays, make sure everything is healing correctly. I’ll update you tonight.” He informed Lander and I before signalling for two men to come and put the man on a stretcher. The mood in the gym had dampened during the interlude, the men who hadn’t fought were still agitated, but seemed less aggressive, and that could turn inward quickly.
“How many are there left to fight?” I asked Ben, he had raided the coach's office, oddly enough with the coach, for materials and equipment. Since the PE curriculum was designed to find and train warriors, the post of PE teacher, basketball, baseball, and football coach, were all held by a Zeta trainer. He flicked through the papers on his clipboard, counting as he went, one of the reasons he couldn’t wait to be a dad was so he could coach little league, so he was loving it. Even when we had been in little league, or T-ball, he had anointed himself assistant coach and tried to run the team, I was always captain, even if I didn’t want to be.
“Thirty-four.” He replied once he reached the end of the papers.
“Right, as some of you... haven’t had the chance to fight yet, and circumstances have proven this was not the wisest of choices, I want all of you still with a grievance on the court, two lines, face your opponent. Go!” I ordered, the men clambered down and arranged themselves into two lines. I walked between them, checking out the makeup of each line. “Is there anyone who hasn’t fought, with a grievance against someone who has fought?” I asked those still seated, a few men raised their hands, their eyes going to Lander, Kasa, or the small Eta, bringing the total to forty-two. “Join a line.” I encouraged. “As we cannot fight each other directly, the line you are in will be your team, you gentlemen, are going to play football. There is plenty of spare equipment in the locker rooms. Coach could you take this team.” I pointed to one side. “Ben, you take the other. The rest of you, there are clothes and shoes in lost property, our Beta female keeps it well stocked. I’m sure you all remember accidentally shifting in high school, well our Beta female came up with the idea to keep a wide selection of clothing styles and sizes available for such occasions. Leave everything in the laundry baskets before you leave, there are several in the locker rooms! Then take your seats in the stands.” I instructed, the atmosphere changing the longer I spoke, until it felt like the night of a championship game. I could hear the two teams trash talking each other as they made their way out of the gym.
“A football game?” Kasa asked, only leaving his man when the teams had left.
“You got a better idea?” I asked him, he chuckled, and shook his head.
“So, football, in February... Not the valentine’s day I had in mind, I gotta say.” Lander commented as he drew closer to us, and my stomach dropped to the floor.
“Its not valentine’s day.” I said uncertain, until both men held up their phones, the date clearly displayed on their screens. “Oh... no, no, no, no, no!” I groaned, and both men chuckled at my expense.
“You have both had a lot going on... plus a house full of guests, maybe she won’t mind?” Kasa tried, but he was wincing like he didn’t believe it himself, while Lander almost wet himself, he was laughing so hard.
“There were times... when you were slutting it up... when I thought.... that man would be screwed... when his mate shows up... The thing I love most about you Daniel... you never disappoint!” He guffawed like a braying donkey.
“Get the fuck away from me if you’re not gonna help me.” I snapped, looking for anyone else for advice. I needed Ben, there was no way he hadn’t forgotten an anniversary, birthday, something, I though as the panic set in. I would have to go into the city, which was ridiculous, I would either get snatched again, or I could take a not insignificant number of men with me, weakening our position.
“I’m sure if you apologise, promise to make it up to her when we aren’t in the middle of a war, she will understand.” Kasa insisted, stopping my anxiety and my body in its tracks. “Go talk to her, the men need some time to warm up, figure out positions and the like. We will send the rest of the men back to the barracks. They can dress in their own clothes, and wash the blood off.” Kasa insisted, walking me towards the door.
“I feel like you’re leading me into a trap.” I muttered, as he nudged me towards my car.
“Just go talk to your woman!” He replied, with a sigh, closing the door behind me. The entire drive I was getting more anxious, we had only just made up, and started spending time together again, the idea that I could have ruined that made me want to vomit.
“Charlie?” I called tentatively.
“You weren’t long!” She called from the kitchen, walking out with a steaming cup of coffee, her expression changing from relaxed to worried when she saw me. “Oh, my God! What happened to your face?” She cried, putting the cup down and rushing to me.
“It’ll be gone by tonight, that’s not why I’m here...” She was too busy fussing over the swelling to really listen.
“Let me get you some ice? It’s so swollen.” He muttered as she ran her fingers beside it, careful not to touch anything inflamed.
“I forgot Valentine’s Day...” I admitted, her fingers froze.
“That’s next week.” She insisted, flapping her hands like it was unimportant, clearly more preoccupied with my eye. I held up my phone as Kasa and Lander had done to me. “No! I had a whole plan! It can’t be today!” She cried grabbing her own phone looking disappointed.
“You did? What were we going to do?” I asked smilingly, partly relieved, partly intrigued.
“I was gonna make... diner?” She blushed, then stared at her phone confused. “I have no idea how I didn’t notice...”
“Rain check? It’s not like I can take you anywhere, or get you anything today, but I do want to do something for our first Valentine’s.” I sighed; I didn’t want her thinking she wasn’t important.
“It would probably be easier when we aren’t preparing for battle.” She nodded.
“Are you mad?” I asked, and she frowned in confusion. “That I forgot, and clearly didn’t plan anything.” I explained.
“No, I forgot too, or got too distracted... it’s not like we had nothing else going on.” She sighed as she wrapped her arms around my waist, lifting her chin for a kiss, which I gladly gave.
“What was your plan?” I whispered as my lips moved down to her mark.
“It was supposed to be a surprise...” She giggled, it turned into a moan as my lips moved over her skin.
“I don’t like surprises.” I mumbled, pulling her closer.
“Where are the Alphas? And- and their men?” She asked breathlessly as I moved us to the couch.
“They won’t be back for a while.” I replied, as I lay her down on the pillows. “Tell me, what you had planned.”
“I was going to make a picnic.” She blushed as my hands roamed her body freely.
“And?” I asked between kisses to her flushed skin, my erection pressed against her honeypot, I could smell her arousal.
“And... serve it on the floor, by the fire...” She moaned as my fingers slipped beneath her shirt, teasing her hard nipples.
“And...” I growled, growing impatient, my hand moved away from her breasts, I slid my fingers into her pants, teasing her wet folds while she whimpered beneath me.
“I was going to serve it wearing the lingerie you bought me!” She blurted as I continued to tease her. I grinned as I let my fingers sink into her warm, wet, entrance, her nails dug into my arm as I curled my fingers. “We’re not alone in the house!” She hissed as I massaged the spot that drives her crazy.
“No, you are not.” I heard Theia chuckle from behind me. Charlie nearly deafened me in one ear with the shriek she let off as she tried to crawl from under me, while I was still dealing with a situation her wriggling wasn’t helping. “But it seems I am interrupting.”
“Yes!” I growled, frustrated in every way.
“No!” Charlie insisted at the same time, pushing my off of her gently, and forcing me to grab a pillow to cover... things. I didn’t think it could get worse, but of course it did, when I realised Hyacinth was beside her, killing my mood, and something else... just not completely, immediately.
“I’m not having that discussion again!” I warned her, the look on her face was enough to know where she was heading.
“We don’t have time to argue about this Daniel! We should put it to a vote.” Hyacinth ploughed ahead regardless.
“You can’t force me to be something, I don’t want to be.” I dug my heels in.
“Force you to be what?” Charlie asked, Hyacinth wore a smug smile when I winced.
