Chapter 110

Charlie POV

I could hear Dermot and Siobhan arguing in the kitchen, their voices carried through the small house. I was sat in the living room, having been parked there by Dermot while he attempted to explain everything to his mate. The longer I sat, the more restless I became, my worry for Daniel and the unexplainable feeling of something looming over us, grew with every breath I took. I tried to block out their voices, focusing instead on my breathing, trying to calm it, and not let my anxiety get the better of me. I hadn’t registered that the arguing had ceased until I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Are you alright?” Even angry, it seemed that Siobhan couldn’t prevent her maternal instincts from taking over.
“I really don’t know anymore,” I replied, more honestly than I intended, shocking myself.
“Oh, right, you don’t know. Every witch has a low level of ability, and it differs among all of us. Many people find it difficult to lie to me, or at least to not answer with more truth than they are comfortable with, especially when in physical contact with me. Even I forget sometimes.” She explained with an apologetic smile.
“But even Hyacinth’s powers don’t work on me, how can yours?” Again, I had said more than I intended.
“I have no idea, why don’t Hyacinth’s powers work on you?” She asked I could see the fear in her eyes, but I bit my lip, determined not to answer. She removed her hand, quickly, and took a step back. “I really don’t know why my power worked on you when Hyacinth doesn’t, but you should know, no one has evaded Hyacinth’s sight before, it will scare people.”
“I know, Hyacinth told me, she was fascinated, but I can understand why it would frighten someone,” I said sadly.
“Dermot finally came clean about how you saved him... I’m sorry I wasn’t more welcoming, but when he came home that night, he was shaking. Afraid, like I had never seen him before, but then again, he had never been attacked by a fully shifted Alpha before either.” I opened my mouth to argue but she held up a hand to stop me. “I know, your mate wasn’t in control, and I don’t fully understand it, but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Dermot wasn’t exactly clear on the details, I was hoping you would join us for a cup of tea, and you could explain how you stopped a wolf from ripping my mate to shreds?” She asked, she was clearly confused and suffering from the same word vomit I was all too familiar with. I nodded and bit my tongue while I tried not to hold it against her as I followed her into the kitchen, where Dermot was pouring the hot water into the teapot. “I know it’s old-fashioned, but I always prefer my tea poured from a proper teapot, probably because my grandmother always prepared it the same way,” Siobhan said with a chuckle. I had no idea how to respond, so I just took a seat at the table instead.
“I was trying to explain to Siobhan how you stopped Daniel when he lunged at me? But I honestly have no idea what you did or how...” Dermot trailed off, I could tell he both wanted to know and didn’t and was talking himself out of asking me directly.
“I’m not sure myself. I still don’t really understand my powers, but Hyacinth said I had put Daniel’s wolf side to sleep, almost like I put him in a coma.” I replied, still ashamed I would do such a thing to him. “He woke up later that night,” I added, hoping they wouldn’t think I was a monster.
“You did more than that, you froze him in mid-air!” Dermot exclaimed as he placed the mugs and the teapot down on the table in front of me. He took the seat opposite but reached out for my hand. “Whatever your powers are, or wherever they come from, they’re like nothing we have ever seen before. I don’t know a single witch in this village, who can do what you do.” Siobhan joined us, she placed a small milk jug and sugar bowl on the table and took the seat next to her husband.
“Telekinesis and mind control, and without a focusing crystal? Honey, she is more powerful than a dozen witches put together.” She said softly to her mate. “Like I said, most witches have a low-level ability, but when we use whatever medium appeals to us, we can increase that power. But it takes years of practice to reach a level that would be considered powerful, and not many witches achieve all that much. I have known a few with telekinesis, but only with a focusing crystal or charm of some kind, they have low-level psychic abilities usually, the odd prophetic dream, the ability to find lost objects, that sort of thing. But mind control is extremely rare, I did know a warlock, he could project the image of your ideal lover onto himself, but never got any further than that, probably because he never tried, but that’s another story.” Siobhan chuckled, as she poured the tea into the cups, almost absentmindedly.
“The point I was trying to make,” Dermot replied while looking at his mate with a quizzical expression on his face. “Is that until you do have a better handle on your powers, I would suggest you show them in public as little as possible. I know you wouldn’t hurt anyone, not intentionally. That’s one of my gifts, I can get a good read on anyone, and know what’s in their hearts. That’s how I knew you were terrified, for me, not yourself when Daniel attacked, and you didn’t use your powers until you absolutely had to, to avoid bloodshed. Even after you stopped him from attacking us, you lowered him to the ground, you could have flung him through a wall, but you didn’t. Hell, you could have killed his wolf if you had wanted, but you sent him for a time-out and kept Daniel from getting as much as a scratch.” Dermot exclaimed excitedly.
“Yeah, but he’s my mate, I couldn’t have hurt him, no matter what he was doing!” I argued.
“I know, but you also made sure I was safe, you’re a good person Charlie, and I don’t want to see you get hurt because of people blinded by their fear. Which will happen if people find out about your powers before you can control them.” Dermot warned he pushed a cup of tea in front of me, I took a deep breath and leaned back in my chair.
“I would quite happily never use my powers ever again, unless absolutely necessary, but what are the odds of that happening?” I asked, although, I knew full well it was a pipe dream. “But I hear what you’re saying, and I will do my best to keep my powers at bay until Daniel and I are out of town,” I added with a humourless chuckle.
“No, Charlie, you can’t show anyone your powers. Even the wolves will be terrified of you, they will be afraid and attack you before you can attack them, even if you only defend yourself someone will get hurt and they will blame you.” Dermot argued, and he was right, I could feel it in my bones, everything he said was true. I nodded and willed my eyes not to cry as I sat opposite the couple, I missed Daniel terribly and longed to feel his arms around me.
“Charlie? What’s wrong?” Daniel’s voice suddenly popped into my head.
“Daniel? Why are you linking me? Has something happened? I didn’t think the Alphas were there yet?” I replied, and out loud, shocked by his sudden intrusion.
“No, baby, you linked me, and I’m in the meeting room, but Hyacinth is outside greeting the first Alpha to arrive, so I have to make this quick, but you were the one who linked me. I got worried when you didn’t say anything, but I could feel how sad and alone you felt, I thought something terrible had happened.” He replied, my face grew redder with embarrassment, I would sound like a teenage girl if I admitted what had really happened to force the link between us.
“Oh, I had no idea, I’m sorry I'm just worried...” your pack will be afraid of me, “about this meeting, and convincing everyone to help us, and I missed you..." and wanted you to comfort me because I'm freaking out about everything again, "I’m sorry, I’ll talk to you later.” I managed to shut the link, somehow, and prayed he didn’t pick up on the real reason behind my anxiety. “Sorry,” I said to Dermot and Siobhan. “I’m not used to mind-linking yet.” I chuckled awkwardly.
“That’s alright, but why didn’t you tell him the truth?” Siobhan asked, again with that maternal look on her face.
“He needs to focus on the meeting, I will talk to him tonight.” I waved off her concerns, but a part of me didn’t want to tell him, I felt foolish, like a burden, and that I would exhaust him with my anxiety about it, even if it was the most likely outcome.
“Why are you so anxious? What is it you’re worried about?” Dermot asked as Siobhan took my hand to comfort me.
“That the other Alphas won’t believe us, and without their warriors we won’t have a chance against the Vampire King and his army, and my uncle who may or not be Zeus and they will destroy the planet and I will never know why!” I blurted against my will.
“Jesus, Mary and Joseph,” Siobhan exclaimed, which struck me as odd, and I couldn’t help but giggle in response.
“I’m sorry, it’s a stress reaction I’ve recently learned.” I laughed as my chortles became howls, and tears started streaming down my face.
“Yes, I can see that,” Dermot replied drily, making me laugh all the more. They both exchanged a bemused glance as I attempted to rein in my hysteria but failed miserably.
