In The Beginning, Chapter 106

The next month passed incredibly slow, Ben and Maria came home, and although I could see a change in her, neither of them brought up the pregnancy, and neither did we. Daniel and I had been struggling, despite my brain understanding that he didn’t choose to cheat on me, my heart still remembered the pain. We had barely spent any time together, I remained in the library most days, only leaving for work or training. Daniel had been spending more time at Appletree, or at the barracks, even opting to sleep at the latter once or twice. For the first week after Her, we had the same argument, seemingly without end. He was angry I had killed Her before he could interrogate Her, I tried to explain, but it made things worse, and we ended up arguing about our relationship. After a week of it, and with no end in sight, I started avoiding him. Halfway through week two he cornered me one night; he insisted we talk, instead we ended up screaming horrible things at each other through our pain. I told him I couldn’t just get over what he did, and he accused me of using it as an excuse for my commitment issues. I tried to hurt him back by telling him exactly what it felt like to see him with Her, and he brought up Elaina, which led to a bickering match on the differences and similarities, until he stormed out and I cried myself to sleep alone. That was eighteen days ago, and the last time we shared a bed, most mornings he was gone before I woke, so much so that I had begun teleporting to my office and home again. Theia was no help, her one and only solution was for her to kill Daniel, so I felt guilty about damaging their relationship. Kendra saw a change in me, and began trying to feed me, constantly asking about my health, so you can imagine what I looked like. Ms Michaels hadn’t breathed a word, and I was so grateful, but without anyone to talk to, my isolation and depression were suffocating me. I was staring into space, as I so often found myself doing lately, when I didn’t have something to focus on, when a knock interrupted me. Half of me wanted to teleport away, in case it was Daniel, I didn’t have the energy for another fight, and I definitely didn’t want to have one at work, in front of the staff.
“Charlie? You in there?” Maria called, and I slid over to the door, opening it a crack.
“What do you need?” I asked, she looked at me oddly.
“Umm, can I come in?” She giggled, I was jealous of her happiness.
“Sure, what do you want?” I asked, shutting the door behind her as she entered the room.
“Charlie? What have you been doing here in here?” Maria asked, picking up one of the many diagrams and sketches to inspect them.
“Working on making a self sustaining house, why?” I snapped, my temper had been shorter lately, and I was struggling not to bite.
“Charlie, are you alright?” She asked, I didn’t know what tipped her off, but she didn’t seem to want to back down.
“I’m fine, why wouldn’t I be?” I replied, wanting to be left to my solitude.
“I know something happened, you and Daniel both look awful, we haven’t seen you in weeks, only Daniel... I’m worried about you.” Maria explained.
“I-” I began, but the building started shaking.
“Luna!” Bailey cried as he burst through the door. “We are under attack; you have to leave so I can get to the Alpha.” He stated bluntly, as Maria and I struggled to stay standing.
“Maria, grab my hand!” I cried, reaching out for her.
“Just go, I’ll be fine.” She called back over the clattering of toppling objects.
“I know about the baby so take my fucking HAND!” I screamed, her fingers linked with mine, and I sent us to the pack house. The moment we touched the ground Maria threw up. I yelled for Kathy and grabbed the phone to call Ben. But after three of my calls went to voicemail, I tried the link. I hadn’t tried it from so far away, but I wanted him to know Maria was safe. “Ben?” I tried, tentatively.
“Charlie? Where are you? Bailey was supposed to get you out!” He snapped.
“He did, I teleported me and Maria to the pack house, they’re safe.” I replied, I could almost feel his relief, it was so strange.
“Keep her with you, and I’ll let you know as soon as I can what’s going on.” He replied, his tone conveying he was speaking as the Beta.
“Of course.” I replied, it wasn’t until I felt him close the link that my brain asked the questions, I could have done without. Where was Daniel? And why hadn’t he linked me to see if I was safe? I almost opened the link to him, before deciding against it.
“I told Ben you’re here; he asked you to stay until he knows what’s going on.” I said as I returned to Maria, who was lying on the couch. She nodded meekly, as Kathy put a cold washcloth on her forehead.
“I didn’t think teleporting would be this bad.” She grumbled. Kathy dashed off and returned with a tall glass of water.
“Drink this, Beta, and I will make you a cup of ginger tea to help with the nausea.” Kathy smiled, handing her the glass. I helped Maria sit up, while Kathy retreated back to the kitchen.
“Who told you about...?” She linked, her hand moving to her stomach.
“Ben, but he wasn’t feeling himself. I think he was in shock, after the attack, and you getting rushed to the hospital. He called... Daniel...” My chest burned with the memory of him and Her together. “Just to let him know everything was alright, but he was just told about the news, and I don’t think he realises he said anything.” I replied, and she chuckled, before tears ran down her cheeks.
“I can’t do this without him.” She sobbed softly, as her hand stroked her stomach.
“You won’t have to, and even if you do, I will be here for you. You’re not going to be alone.” I promised, as I held her.
“I’m sorry, it’s the hormones.” She cried, and I couldn’t stifle my laughter, which made her smile at least. We sat on the couch, my arm around her until her tears stopped, and she had finished her tea. It had been thirty-five minutes since I had spoken to Ben when the phone rang, and I put it on speaker.
“Charlie? Is Maria with you?” Ben asked, and she heaved a sigh of relief, folding over on herself as she fought back another round of sobs. I stroked her back encouragingly.
“Yeah, she’s just a little shook up, teleporting made her very nauseated.” I explained, as she pulled herself together.
“I’m here.” She sniffled, as she wiped her cheeks dry.
“Thank the Goddess. Okay, about forty minutes ago a group of vampires teleported into Appletree. They didn’t care who saw them, appearing in front of, and attacking, humans and Lycans alike once inside. They drew the security teams into the lower levels, then teleported to the fiftieth floor, and tried to capture you. Bailey killed three of them outside your office, with the aid of several female assistants, it’s a minor miracle they got out of there alive. We have Hyacinth coming to spell the humans that saw things they can’t explain, but thankfully the chaos they created to draw in the Etas made it difficult for anyone to get a good look at anything... We lost two pack members in R&D, and a couple of humans from legal and HR, one Eta, and... they took Daniel, when they failed to get to you.” He explained slowly. I don’t know how to explain the numbness I felt, it was like all of my emotions were behind thick glass, I knew what I should be feeling, but I didn’t. I handed Maria the phone and walked outside to the Hellebores bush Theia had planted in the lawn.
“Theia, I need you.” I whispered into the leaves, almost instantly she was beside me.
“What happened?” She asked, her eyes scanning me quickly for injuries.
“Daniel has been taken, I need you to teach me how to use my powers and the link to find him.” I stated bluntly.
“Taken by whom?” She asked, raising her eyebrows and crossing her arms.
“Vampires is all I know.” I replied.
“Hermes.” She spat, her face the picture of revulsion. “Leave him there, the bond will wither after he dies, and we can fight Apollo and Zeus together, like we were always meant to.”
“What are you talking about? They’re going to take his soul! His spark! I can’t let that happen!” My fury broke the barrier holding my emotions back, they slammed into me like they were rear-ending my car. “He’s my mate! I love him! If I let him die a piece of me goes with him, so I will find him, with or without your help.” I snarled, reaching inside myself for my power, and focusing on the link. I imagined a rope of light, glowing softly in the darkness, leading me to Daniel, Then I gathered as much power as I could, and sent my power outwards. I had covered the entire pack in seconds, then the city, spreading outwards as far as I could go, but it wasn’t enough, and I felt my power snap back.
“Charlie? What are you doing?” Theia asked quietly.
“Finding Daniel.” I snarled and gathered my power again. I didn’t stop until every molecule in my body felt energised by the power, like I had the first night, on my birthday. I pictured Daniel at the end of the rope, waiting for me, and sent it out again. I had almost covered the state, and half of the neighbouring state, when my powers snapped back, without them finding him.
“I will help! Please stop before you hurt yourself!” Theia cried, but I was already sending my power out again, my anger and pain fuelling it, until it exploded out of me. But rather than shooting out in all directions, it only came from my chest, like a giant spear hurtling hundreds of miles away, until I felt it touch Daniel. My knees gave out as my powers returned, hitting the frozen ground hard, Theia helped me to my feet, but her face was full of worry. “Charlie? Are you alright?” She asked me alarmed.
“I know where Daniel is.” I panted.
