In The Beginning, Chapter 29

Charlie POV

It was only 9:10am and I was already exhausted, Daniel had snapped at Bailey for standing too close in the elevator, I kid you not. By the time we got to his office he was being completely irrational, he made my bodyguard wait outside so he could kiss me goodbye. Bailey was nothing but cordial and professional, but he still felt like a babysitter, something I was painfully aware of as I approached Kendra and my office.
“Miss Phillips.” Kendra nodded with a smile.
“Yeah, yeah, yuck it up.” I laughed. “Bailey will be sitting in the conference room for the morning, I’m only here until lunch. Can you make sure any meetings that I absolutely have to be at are scheduled for the mornings, for the next month at least, please? And what do I need to get done ASAP?” I asked as I opened the door for Bailey, he ignored it, and walked into my office, sniffed around, literally, before walking into the conference room and doing the same. Kendra scurried around her desk and pulled me into my office, after he finally took a seat, facing me, near to the still open door. She pulled me to my desk depositing me in my chair as she pulled a few things up on the desktop.
“This is your calendar; with everything I’ve arranged so far. And if you click on this tab here, your whole day is scheduled minute by minute. These emails only you could reply to, so they’ve been put in this urgent folder. I’m going to go make us coffee while you look over these, and then I want the dirt! Oh, my goddess, I just saw the ring!” she squealed as she grabbed my hand. I couldn’t stop the grin that spread across my face.
“Yeah, he did pick the perfect ring.” I smiled like an idiot.
“I can’t wait to meet my mate.” Kendra sighed dreamily, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“You’re still young. Don’t you want to live a little before you settle down?” I asked, I felt too young to be getting married.
“Not really, I’ve been eighteen for nine months, and I still haven’t met my mate, and nothing I’ve done so far has been better than having someone to share it with.” She shrugged, and I baulked at how young she was, in her Conservative clothing, she looked in her early twenties.
“Daniel is 35.” I reminded her, gently. Her face contorted in pain and fear.
“I hope I don’t have to wait that long.” She muttered as she left the office. I shook my head and suppressed a giggle, before focusing on the extremely detailed calendar. By the time Kendra returned with the coffees, I had answered a few emails, and rearranged a few appointments. So, I gave myself two minutes to answer Kendra's questions while I drank some of my latte, I didn’t get a chance to close the document before she pounced. “When did he propose? Where were you? Was it romantic? Is Bailey your bodyguard? Is he to keep other males away from you?” She blurted in rapid fire, as she plopped down on the chair opposite me.
“Okay, okay. He proposed a bunch of times, always romantic, and in different places. Yes, Bailey is my bodyguard, Daniel-” Her squeal cut me off. “He’s worried so Bailey is to get me to safety if something happens.” I finished with a giggle.
“But you’re like a goddess or something?” She whispered like it was a conspiracy.
“Not exactly, my father is a God, I guess, I’m not sure what that makes me.” I replied with a scoff.
“But you have powers, why can’t they protect you?” She asked, but it was full of concern, not derision.
“That’s why I will only be here part time for a while, I have to learn how to use them, my aunt will be teaching me.” I explained, it was nice to have someone to talk to about all the craziness.
“Huh, when we get our wolves, we just know, like instinct, we aren’t really taught how to shift, it just happens. Why do you think you have to learn about your powers, instead of like a switch flipping and you knowing?” She asked, and again I felt nothing but curiosity and mild concern from her.
“I don’t know, maybe because they were blocked, or spelled or I don’t even know the terminology, but they were bound, is the word used most, until I turned twenty five. Maybe if they had developed naturally, it would have been a little at a time, and my instincts would be enough, but I got clobbered with mine when the spell broke. Before that I had only used my powers to protect myself, and only in the past couple of months. My aunt said my powers were leaking through the cracks in the spell as it became weaker, so they’ve protected me, but also nearly killed me.” I blurted, my mouth running away with me again, I chuckled humourlessly, and awkwardly after my little outburst. “I’m sure Bailey won’t be around too long, don’t worry.” I said as I turned back to my screen. “Oh, Daniel said he gave you my laptop so you could forward things to R&D, et cetera, could you get it for me so I can see what you’ve sent, please? And what were you telling people about why I wasn’t here?” I asked, Daniel had been kinda vague about a few things.
“I, well, Mr Summer told me to say you were wrapping things up with your previous job, but I knew a simple web search would disprove that pretty quickly, so I may have said you were in talks over taking over as head of design, but I made it sound like you wanted to stay here working on your designs, and you were trying to convince Mr Summer, but he was making it difficult. It worked for a while, but then word got out to the humans, that you and Mr Summer are together, so right now some of them think you’ve been whisked away somewhere exotic, and the rest think you’ve been threatening to quit if he doesn’t make you head of design. I don’t know how that got out there, I swear, I was trying to help.” She grimaced.
“It’s okay, I knew there would be rumours about me sleeping my way to the top.” I said with a shrug, and turned back to my screen, a little hurt, but also amused by how wrong the rumour mill got it.

My morning was ticking away nicely, I had worked through nearly half of the things Kendra had red flagged for me, when I heard a growl that shook the windows. I dashed out of my office confused, Kendra was frozen at her desk, shaking her head as if to say she didn’t know. Bailey had left his seat and was looking down the offices, for a moment, before walking back and settling in again. I watched him perplexed, when a commotion drew my eyes back into the communal secretarial area, where a furious Daniel was storming through. I could sense his outrage, but not why, I rushed towards him, meeting him halfway.
“What happened?” I asked, concerned. He brought my hand to his face, sniffing my wrist, before placing a soft kiss on my pulse.
“I heard what people have been saying about you, I never meant for that to happen.” He murmured, ignoring the eyes on us.
“I was expecting it.” I shrugged, and wrapped my arms around his neck, his breath hitched in surprise. We had agreed to keep our PDA behind closed doors at the office, for a while, but if everyone already knew, might as well give them something to gossip about. I placed a chaste kiss on his lips, and turned to go back to my office, when he pulled me back, I nearly bounced off his solid chest as his arms wrapped around me.
“Your scent is the only thing keeping me calm.” He confessed through the link, as his nose ran along my sweater to my ear. “Are you sure you’re, okay?” He asked aloud, and I knew the Lycans near us could hear.
“Yes, I don’t care what they think, I know the truth, and so do you.” I said with a smile. He followed me into my office, looking around it with interest.
“You need a couch.” He announced suddenly, I had picked a few chairs, and other bits and pieces, but a couch seemed inappropriate.
“Why would I need a couch? I’m only gonna have one to two people in here at a time, we have a conference room for meetings.” I chuckled, unaware of the sinister smile brewing on his lips.
“You need a couch for me to fuck you on when you’ve been naughty.” He promised, his voice low and full of authority. His hands moved over my body as he pushed me against the desk. “But I suppose I could always bend you over this.” He moved between my legs, his fingers started pulling my skirt up slowly, he got it above my stockings, the tips of his fingers moved over my bare thighs, when my phone rang. I grabbed it, hoping to either calm myself down, or get it over with quickly so he could do whatever he wanted to me.
“Your next appointment is with Mr Harrison Ryan; he will be here in five minutes to interview for one of the engineer positions?” Kendra reminded me, as Daniel’s lips moved along my jaw.
“Thank you, Kendra, Mr Summer will be leaving shortly.” I managed to whimper out before his lips engulfed mine, and his hand took the receiver from mine, ending the call.
“I will leave in five minutes, after I have made you and this office stink of me.” He chuckled darkly through the link, as he pressed me down onto the desk, his body caging me, his hands exploring my body, as his lips and tongue attacked mine.
