Chapter 30

Daniel’s POV

I walked towards my office where I knew my brother would be waiting happier than I had ever been, I loved that she could be bratty and tease me. I couldn’t wait to get back upstairs to her and spend the evening doing as many of the things we had done in our dreams together. I was on cloud nine, she was the most amazing woman I had ever met, and she was mine. I couldn’t keep the smile from my face as I opened the door. All that went out of the window when I saw Ben’s face, he was a dishevelled mess.
“What happened?” I asked him immediately.
“The same thing that’s been happening for months. I’ve been picking up all the slack while you were, where exactly?” He responded visibly irritated.
“I was with my mate, trying to explain all of this to her so I could introduce her to the pack. Show them they have a Luna, but she needed a bit of time to understand it all. She still doesn’t know if she wants to lead, I need more time, to convince her and help her understand, she’s human, it's a bit of an adjustment for her. You have to understand that?” I asked incredulously that he was acting so unsympathetic.
“I don’t have any more time to give you, neither does the pack. We are on the verge of a civil war here? How do you not understand that?” He yelled; his words were like a slap in the face. I knew there were issues with the pack, but I didn’t know it was that bad.
“You really think it could come to that?” I asked, shaken and confused.
“I have been trying to tell you all day, this is more than just some unhappy rumblings after your little display at the office today. It’s all the ammunition they needed to convince people you aren’t fit to be Alpha anymore!” His voice was getting louder, and I unintentionally looked up, concerned she would hear. Which sent Ben over the edge. “I'M TELLING YOU THE PACK IS FALLING APART AND YOU ARE STILL MORE CONCERNED WITH HER? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” He screamed at me.
“Hey, you know it’s not like that! Do you remember what you were like when you met Maria? You too barely left your bedroom, and I know you weren’t just talking because I was right next door. We shared a wall, so I heard a lot, stuff I wish I didn’t know, but I do! So back off a second, I was happy for the first time in months, years even, before you came in here yelling at me. If the pack has concerns, then I will reassure them. Charlie is spending the weekend, I was going to introduce her to some of the pack members and Mom and Dad anyway, show her around. It’ll be a soft introduction as Luna until she’s ready for me to mark her.” I was yelling too getting frustrated.
“WHY ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT YOUR MATE? THE PACK SHOULD BE YOUR ONLY CONCERN RIGHT NOW! AND AS FOR ME AND MARIA, WE WERE KIDS, WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ALL OVER EACH OTHER AND I WASN’T THE ALPHA! SO, I COULD SPEND A FEW WEEKS IN BED WITH MY MATE. IT SUCKS BUT YOU DON’T HAVE THAT LUXURY, ESPECIALLY NOT NOW. SO, GET IT TOGETHER!” He screamed in my face; she definitely would have heard that! I thought getting pissed off with his attitude.
“IF THEY THINK SHE IS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM, INTRODUCING HER TO THEM A LITTLE WILL STOP THE RUMOURS. PROBLEM SOLVED. AND THEY WOULD STILL HAVE TO CHALLENGE ME, WHICH THEY WOULDN’T SURVIVE. SO, THERE WILL BE NO CIVIL WAR, NO ISSUES, NOTHING.” I took a breath to try and calm down and stop bellowing at him. “Go home to Maria. I will call a pack meeting tomorrow night, and tell them she is my mate and will be here this weekend, I will even arrange for her to meet the elders. It won’t be a problem; she will win them over. Now can I get back to my mate, please? We were kinda in the middle of something when you linked me.” I said with a smile.
“YOU HAVE A DUTY TO YOUR PACK!” Ben screamed. “YOU SHOULD BE OUT THERE REASSURING EVERYONE, NOT WITH YOUR LATEST PLAYTHING!” My blood boiled, and my wolf forced himself forward, roaring menacingly as my claws extended and my fangs protruded. I grabbed Ben by his jacket and flung him bodily through the closed office door. He crashed into a table in the hall, dazed and unable to get up. I saw him but I couldn’t stop myself. I stepped through the splintered door, stalking towards him like a predator on the hunt, attacking him like prey before he had even stood up. I watched as my claw gripped his throat, as my arm lifted him off the ground, effortlessly. His body dangled, his face red with lack of oxygen. Then I heard my wolf speak through my mouth.
“Never, ever disrespect my mate again.” Suddenly I could smell her sweet, heavenly scent, and feel her soft hand on me, my wolf pulled back, and I knew it was because he didn’t want to scare her. Because I didn’t want to scare her. I felt my hand release my brother, my fangs slowly retracted, I pulled her into me, inhaling her intoxicating scent as my nose ran from her shoulder to her neck. “I’m sorry, I never wanted you to see me like that, I was so angry, but I swear I would never hurt you.” Feeling her soft body against mine, calmed and excited me. I moved my way up to her jawline, my lips connected with hers, and my arousal grew with every taste of her tongue. Something felt off, but I wasn’t sure what. I pulled away, searching her eyes for what was wrong.
“I’m going home, you have stuff to take care of and so do I. I’m going to go get dressed, you should help your brother.” She looked oddly calm, but resolute. That’s when I realised, she was leaving me, for good. I promised I would respect her wishes if she chose not to be with me, but I never thought she would actually do it. I thought I would be able to make her see how perfect we were for each other. But I blew it, I had terrified her, and she was leaving, because I couldn’t control my temper. I was frozen in shock, stunned, it felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest. I watched her calmly walk up the stairs and my knees went out from under me. I crashed onto the floor, destroyed. I curled into the foetal position, my world crumbling around me. I felt my brother’s hands lift me slightly, taking my weight, I could see his lips move but I couldn’t hear anything. I was lost, completely broken. Ben started shaking me, trying to get me to respond to him. I blinked, trying to focus on his voice.
“Daniel, Daniel, answer me, what’s wrong, what’s happening?” He muttered, a terrified look on his face.
“She’s leaving me, maybe leaving the company. I told her I wouldn’t fight if she didn’t want to be with me, I thought I would be able to convince her, I didn’t think she would leave! I blew it, I blew it!” Realisation dawned on his face as he stared at me. I put my head in my hands, my elbows resting on my knees. “I blew it, I fucking blew it!” I sobbed as tears pricked my eyes.
“No, no, it’s not too late, we can talk to her. We can fix this; I can fix this. I’m sorry I should’ve never said what I did, I was asking for your wolf to attack me. I overstepped, I was angry, and I didn’t mean it. I’m so sorry Daniel, please forgive me, please?” He kept imploring me. I couldn’t stop the overwhelming feeling of despair.
“You can’t Ben, I promised her that she could leave if she wanted to, you can’t fix this. I blew it!” I almost begged him for it not to be true when I heard her beautiful voice again.
“I need my phone to call a rideshare and my bag. You can keep the phone and laptop; I will arrange for the bonus to be transferred back to Appletree. I will consider the contract voided; I will have my lawyer contact legal to ensure that’s done by the end of next week. Thank you for the opportunity but I don’t think it’s a good fit.”
“I have it in the office, give me a second,” Ben told her, his voice sounded strained like he wasn’t sure what to do. I couldn’t move, I was afraid if I looked at her it would push me over the edge into insanity.
“Thank you, is there somewhere I can wait until my car gets here? I would prefer to wait somewhere other than this house, if possible.” She sounded so cold, it made me flinch slightly, a new round of sobs escaping my body.
“It’s cold and dark out, the nearest house is about a mile away. I’m afraid you’re stuck here if a rideshare will even come out this far.” Ben told her, I felt myself disconnect, I couldn’t cope with the pain anymore, I wanted to escape, let my wolf take the reins, anything to not feel the pain anymore.
“I guess I will have to try, I need to get home. I’ll wait in the living room if that’s alright?” She said sternly. “If someone could send my portfolio to me, I’m not sure where it went in the commotion earlier, but if it’s found I would like it back please?” I heard her footsteps recede into the lounge; I still couldn’t move. Until I heard her on the phone with someone, then I heard him, and my wolf's ears perked up. Then he saw red.
