In The Beginning, Chapter 37

Our morning had been delayed so much, we ended up picking up coffee on the way to the office, the cups Daniel had made were left untouched in the bedroom. Bailey was my shadow, once again, following me to my office, inspecting everything before I was allowed to enter. Kendra had left me perched on her desk, while she went to make more coffee, and something for my breakfast, while I drained the last of the cup I brought. Finally, I was allowed to enter my office and immediately began answering emails and checking my calendar. The morning ticked along, I got as much done as I could, and was just packing up my things to head to Daniel’s office, when I heard Kendra arguing with someone, insisting they didn’t have an appointment. I opened my door, to see Kendra almost bent over her desk, snarling at Warren, while Bailey had disappeared from his seat in the conference room.
“What’s going on? Where’s Bailey? And why are you harassing my assistant?” I asked the pair, who seemed moments away from killing each other.
“You said you would call me.” Was all Warren said as he indicated for me to step aside so he could enter my office. With an exasperated sigh, I let him in, while silently placating Kendra.
“I know, I’m sorry, there’s been a lot going on, I forgot to call you.” I explained, as he paced my office. “I haven’t even had chance to talk to Daniel about letting you come to the pack yet.”
“Yeah, fine.” He muttered distractedly. “You said the vampires are making a play for power everywhere yeah?” He asked, aggressively.
“Yeah, what about it?” I asked, but we were interrupted by Bailey barging in, he sniffed Warren before growling, aggressively, and tried to move his body between us. “Bailey, this is Warren, Warren, my bodyguard, Bailey.” I introduced the two men, but Bailey was actively ignoring me, keeping his defensive posture as Warren seemed oblivious to the tension.
“Yeah, hey.” He replied distractedly, waving a hand in Bailey’s direction, as a greeting. “I need to know what is happening with the King, and the world, everything.” Warren demanded, his legs still pacing back and forth.
“We know no more than the last time I spoke to you, I’m sorry.” I added, before another argument outside my office interrupted us. My door flew open, and Elaina rushed into the room, nose first, sniffing the air greedily.
“Mate!” She grinned, with a seductive smile, I saw Warren’s knees almost give out beneath him as he stared at her, his face a picture of agony. Elaina’s face crumpled into a confused, hurt grimace, and she took an instinctive step back, her eyes lowered. My hands started tingling, I wanted so badly to comfort her, she looked devastated.
“NO! No, please, you don’t understand.” Warren pleaded with her, before sighing sadly. He clicked his fingers, and his hand and wrist erupted in flames. Elaina, who had looked like a lost little girl just seconds before, suddenly got a look of understanding. She took a step forward, and Warren retreated a step, it was almost like a dance. He shook his head, indicating she shouldn’t move closer, freezing her in her tracks. She looked down for a moment, and I hated that this was playing out in front of an audience, instead of in private. Elaina, as if deciding something, suddenly met Warren’s gaze, and a garland of jasmine began blossoming on her head. Warren looked like he was in agony, like he was at war with himself, I could see he wanted to claim her, but he was too afraid. Elaina took a tentative step towards him, the look in his eyes was unmistakeable, he was silently begging her not to touch him. She took another one, and Warren lost it, just as Daniel arrived.
“Stay away from me! Don’t touch me!” Warren cried, only stopping when he heard Daniel’s much louder growl of warning. Elaina bared her neck, a tear falling down her cheek, while the sight seemed to break Warren further.
“My office, now.” Daniel ordered; Bailey dutifully, grabbed Elaina by the elbow, leading her to the door, when Warren let out a howl of fury, hurled a fireball at Bailey’s head, he got his free arm up, and it hit his shoulder, he winced as it burned away part of his clothing.
“Don’t fucking touch her!” Warren roared, and despite his fury, I knew he had only used a fraction of his power so far, he was intentionally holding back as much as he could. Daniel nodded and Bailey released her arm, before anyone could stop her, Elaina ran towards Warren, leaping she wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed his lips softly. Like something in him snapped, Warren pulled her closer, his hands on her back. “You shouldn’t have done that Anima Gemella.” Warren breathed as he brushed her hair away from her face gently.
“Oh, my sweet mate, you will learn, that telling me not to do something, just makes me want it all the more.” Elaina replied, her hands gripped his hair and dragged his mouth back to hers as he groaned in appreciation.
“I believe I gave an order?” Daniel growled, and it was obvious, he was pissed. He exchanged something silently with Bailey, who led Elaina and Warren out of my now cramped office, leaving Daniel and I alone. “I can’t even leave you alone for a few hours without you getting into trouble.” He snapped, still angry. I walked around my desk, wrapped my arms around his waist, pressing my body against his until he relented and placed a chaste kiss on my lips.
“I didn’t invite Warren, he just showed up.” I whispered, hoping not to set him off again.
“I know, the girl that was covering reception called Ms Michaels when he stormed past her. The question is, how did he get up here in the first place?” Daniel asked with a sigh, his knuckles brushed against my cheek.
“That’s for you to figure out boss man.” I teased as I ran my fingers along his tie.
“If I didn’t have things to deal with you would be bent over that desk receiving a spanking.” He threatened, his voice low, barely above a whisper.
“Promises, promises...” I sang as I brushed my way past him and out the door, leaving him to follow me as I strolled to his office.
“Hmm, I love the way your ass moves when you walk.” He linked, as he followed me. “It looks like a sweet juicy peach I just want to take a bit out of.” He continued, as my blush crept over my face, and down my neck. Ms Michaels tried to hide her smirk as I passed her but considering I could feel Daniel’s eyes on my ass, I had no doubts about the dirty smile on his face. Not wanting to just walk into Daniel’s office, like I owned the place, or worse, knock, considering the people inside were guests too, I paused stopping just short of the door. Daniel must’ve sensed it, because, with a chuckle, he grabbed my hand as he walked past me, leading me into the office without a care. Elaina and Warren were in the middle of a pretty heated make out session on the couch, jumping apart when Daniel cleared his throat loudly. While Bailey looked uncomfortable, his eyes anywhere but at the couple. “You can wait outside.” Daniel instructed him bluntly, before he dragged me over to, and behind his desk, indicating for the other couple to sit opposite, he sat in his chair, and pulled me onto his lap. I tried to get back up, but he stubbornly caged me within his arms. “Stay here, you will help keep me calm.” He linked; how could I refuse? Regardless of my burning face, I stayed on his lap, his chin resting on my shoulder, as we faced the new mates. “I’m sure you are aware Elaina but for Warren, and Charlie, who is still learning about the pack, when a wolf meets their mate, they have to decide which pack to join. Typically, Lycan’s go to the pack where they will be granted the highest rank, unless their mate is not Lycan, and then that mate joins the pack. However, there are exceptions to every rule, and that is where we have found ourselves. Elaina needs a pack,” Daniel informed Warren, “but, our pack might not be willing to accept you as member. Add that to the fact that you live a nomadic existence, and that could be a disaster. Without a community to call her own, Elaina may lose her mind.” The couple looked at each other, they both looked dejected, but their fingers were still interlaced, making me smile.
“Alpha, if I may?” Elaina asked, baring her neck.
“Yes?” Daniel replied.
“Alpha, I don’t want to live without my mate, if the pack won’t accept him, I will leave, all I ask, is to occasionally visit my family?” Elaina asked, and it broke my heart, I interlaced my fingers with Daniel’s partly to support him, partly to comfort myself.
“I have given my permission, provisionally, for Warren to continue living in the city, but I hope I don’t have to explain to either of you how dangerous it could be if people discover your particular talents.” Daniel explained to the couple, before directing his attention just to Warren. “And if I get any reports of your... gifts being used on anyone, but especially on innocents, I will hunt you down and ensure it was your last.” Daniel wasn’t angry, or growling, just laying out what would happen, if he was forced to act.
“Alpha, I swear, I would never-” Warren began but Daniel interrupted.
“I only have your word on that, which I have no reason to believe, and you will have a hard time convincing the wolves of our pack too.” I couldn’t help glancing at Daniel, it was unfair, and after all we had been through, I didn’t want to watch another couple go through that. “But... I will, ah I will talk with the elders, see if we could introduce Warren slowly to the pack, they may have conditions, or they could flat out refuse. I’m not making any promises, the best I could offer if that happens, is to let you both live in the city, and allow just Elaina to be a member of the pack.” Daniel relented, over Elaina’s delighted squeals. “I’m not promising anything, do not get your hopes up.” He warned her a little more sternly.
“Yes Alpha.” She replied, but her smile was enormous.
“Go on, you have the afternoon off.” Daniel dismissed them, already focused on me, which made me a little bashful. Which only got worse as the couple were leaving.
“Are you going to be all over me like that Tesoro? I quite like the idea of you not being able to leave me alone.” Warren teased Elaina as they left.
“I doubt it, she’s hotter than you, and a better kisser.” Elaina replied with a wicked smile, although Daniel growled a little at that statement, while I was hiding my face mortified.
“Okay, one, that’s hot.” Warren began. “And two, you dated Charlie?” He asked, his voice a little higher than I think he intended.
“Yeah, but not for long.” Elaina shrugged.
“You’re perfect.” I heard Warren gasp as he allowed himself to be led away by the petite brunette.
