Chapter 43

“Hyacinth, the Queen of the witches Hyacinth?” Ben asked, he seemed just as confused as me.
“Yeah, I mean I can’t think of anyone else who it could be. And the ‘stick’? Could be her staff, one of the objects she uses to channel her powers.” Daniel clarified for me.
“Okay, so what happened next?” Maria asked me, she had somehow kept a clear head and it helped me stay calm.
“A man with blue-black hair tried to stab Hyacinth?” I shrugged, unsure. “With a glistening, glimmering spear-like thing but Daniel blocked it. With his body and died.” I let out a shaky breath, tears pricked my eyes at the memory. “And I don’t really know what happened next. I remember running to him and screaming and it was like everyone else disappeared. And the violet-eyed woman was there, and she started telling me things. Things I had to tell Daniel and change the future and she would come back to see me again.” I rushed through the last part, as I attempted to hold myself together and not bawl my eyes out. Daniel wrapped his arms around me, and Maria poured the scotch.
“Alright, so I’m guessing we are here because of what she said? So, what did she say?” Ben asked as Maria placed a glass in front of Daniel. She then placed one in front of me while I cut the limes, Daniel cleared his throat, taking over until I had better control over myself, while she poured drinks for Ben and herself.
“She said that the difficulties we and the other packs are experiencing, are happening everywhere and we needed to warn them, and the covens. She said I need to go see Hyacinth, and the future wasn’t set, it could change. Which makes me believe that what Charlie saw was just one of many possible futures. She also said she would come back when Charlie knows who she is. Between that, the visions and the fact that her eyes were purple before she fully woke up, it all leads me to believe Charlie isn’t completely human.” Maria and Ben exchanged a look while I was adding the ice and lime to my scotch.
“What’s that?” I asked them, pointing at them both. “What was that look then?” I demanded.
“Alright, it’s not a big deal, it’s just when I first met you, and Ben too, we noticed that you don’t smell like most humans. There’s something, I don’t know, spicy, I guess? I can’t really explain it. But we both agreed you're not 100% human. I’m sorry we should have said something, but you were dealing with so much. We didn’t want to overwhelm you.” Maria said apologetically, I took a large gulp of my drink, emptied the glass and held it out for someone to pour me another one. Ben did, looking at me with concern.
“So, I’m not human, I get visions, I’m mated to a werewolf. Yeah, I know not your word.” I added hastily when all three of them blanched. “Witches exist, and there could be a war coming, anything I forgot?” I asked, half convinced I really was delusional. No one said anything, I took another large gulp, draining the glass again, and I stuck my arm out to Ben for another refill.
“Are you sure, you can handle another?” Daniel asked me quietly. I shot him a withering glance.
“I’m not convinced any of this is real, I could be in a psych hospital right now, lost in a delusion of my own making. And I wouldn’t know, but that makes more sense than everything that’s happened in the last week so, yeah, I want another drink. And maybe another one after that! Or the whole damn bottle! Because this!” I made a circle with my finger over the table including them all in it. “Is insane, it’s fucking nuts. So, I’m going to drink, until it makes sense, or I pass out. Anybody got a problem with that?” I was angry and upset and freaked out. I knew I was being unfair, Daniel was just looking out for me, and they hadn’t done anything wrong, but it was all too much to handle at once. I snatched the bottle off Ben and poured myself a large drink, adding a new wedge of lime and a few ice cubes. Maria suppressed a chuckle, badly, Ben looked shocked by my outburst, and Daniel grunted obviously a little annoyed. I took a large gulp and put my glass on the table and took a deep breath. “I just need something to make sense. One thing, to help me make sense of everything and right now that one thing is booze. Specifically, a scotch on the rocks with a twist!” I emptied the glass again and reached for the bottle, but Daniel snatched it away from me.
“Last one until you eat something!” He warned, pouring me a small serving. I huffed annoyed; he got up to make me something to eat handing the bottle to Ben. The moment his back was turned Maria grabbed the bottle and filled my glass and hers. I smiled at her, half thankful, half apologetic for my tantrum. Ben looked at her incredulously.
“She’s had a rough day, cut her some slack!” She mouthed; it must have been for my benefit as she could have said it through mind-link. He grunted and crossed his arms.
“Thank you.” I mouthed back. “I’m sorry I went off, it’s just a lot to wrap my head around you know?” I added aloud, I could hear my words slurring slightly but I didn’t care.
“Don’t apologise, it’s more than anyone should have to deal with. You deserve to freak out a little, and no one should blame you for that!” She replied even louder, and obviously for Daniel’s benefit. He grumbled as he pulled produce out of the refridgerator.
“I’m not blaming her Maria; I’m making her a sandwich, so she doesn’t burn a hole in her stomach or die of alcohol poisoning. We have no idea how much alcohol will affect her! Look at nymphs, they can get wasted, just like humans. Just because alcohol doesn’t have much of an effect on us, doesn’t mean it’ll be the same for her!” He replied angrily.
“Wait, alcohol doesn’t affect you? How’s that? And why do you drink if you can’t get drunk?” I asked, feeling the scotch for the first time.
“It is difficult, but not impossible to get drunk, because of our metabolisms, we burn twice as many calories as humans, more if we shift regularly,” Maria explained softly.
“That sucks! And is so not fair! You get to be all special and eat whatever you want? And you,” I pointed at Maria, “look like that too! So unfair. I would hate you if you weren’t so nice.” I mumbled; Ben laughed at my outrage while Maria just stared at me open-mouthed. Daniel placed a sandwich in front of me and a glass of water, I shot him another glare.
“It will help with the hangover.” He stated simply.
“I’m not happy with you either, you shouldn’t be able to look like that and eat junk food, you should have to be a health nut or something!” I pouted taking a bite out of my sandwich, it was delicious, which also irritated me. Daniel kissed the top of my head while Ben was still belly-laughing at my antics.
“Look like what?” Maria asked, more to Ben and Daniel than me but they both shrugged, like they didn’t know.
“Like a freaking supermodel,” I grumbled, swallowing my bite and taking another one. Ben started laughing again, even Daniel let out a chuckle. I drank a bit of the water, giving Daniel a look before picking up my scotch and draining the glass. I continued eating the sandwich because it was good but maintained my bad mood. “So, what’s the plan?” I asked after I had swallowed another bite.
“Well, I think we should go and see Hyacinth. Both of us, maybe she will have answers about your lineage. If not, at least she might be able to tell us about what you saw.” Daniel said. “But that means Ben would have to cover for me at work for a few days.” He shot Maria a guilty look.
“Oh, you owe me big time Daniel!” She fumed.
“What’s happening?” I asked, not sure if it was the fact that I was a little drunk or if something was going on.
“Ben was supposed to have some time off. He’s been covering for me for a while now, and he and Maria needed some time to themselves.” Daniel explained softly.
“How long’s a while? And covering for what? I thought you were visiting build sites?” I asked, I looked around at all three of them.
“Three months,” Daniel admitted guiltily, “I was looking for answers about you. I went to Hyacinth after the first few dreams, I spent two weeks there, the first one just trying to see her, the second working with her to find you. She couldn’t help me, so I came home, but the dreams were driving me mad. I needed to find you. So, I went in search of anyone who could help me, Ben was in charge of Appletree and the pack while I was gone. I did go to some of the build sites too, but it was a cover so I could find you. Which didn’t leave much time for their relationship.” He couldn’t meet my eye, I felt awful, especially because they were losing their vacation because of me too.
“I’m so sorry Maria, I had no idea.” I reached across the table and squeezed her hand, she gave me a small smile in return, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
“I promise you will get that time soon; I promise,” Daniel swore to them both.
