Chapter 65
The woman’s eyes glazed over, like she was focused on something else, for a few moments, before she simply nodded.
“The Alpha has given me permission.” She stated softly. “Yes, I told the Alpha, I believed it was his Lycan side searching for his mate. I could not confirm it, however, as I could not see Miss Phillips. I was also unaware that she was experiencing the same dreams.”
“Do you still believe it was Daniel that initiated the dreams?” Owen asked, a triumphant look on his face.
“I do not know, I have never heard of shared dreams before, I doubt anyone has. But I do not feel any negative emotions or intentions from Miss Phillips.” She said in the same sing-song voice before she abruptly turned away from Owen and walked back to her seat. His facade was long forgotten, his rage and irritation obvious to everyone in the room, I heard a slight chuckle from Ben. I suspected he enjoyed watching his traitorous uncle have his authority undermined by the seer but kept my own face calm.
“Fine. We will move on.” Owen stated, his frustration growing. “Have you ever had a man other than Daniel in your bed?” I heard a few whispers and mutterings, I also felt Ben bristle beside me.
“It is still Alpha to you uncle, whether he is present or not, and your continued disrespect will be dealt with if I have to remind you again!” Ben barked, as he took a step forward. I grabbed his arm to prevent him from going further and shook my head slightly, it wasn’t the time.
“No, I have never had sex with a man, other than Daniel,” I stated calmly.
“LIAR!” Owen bellowed. “You honestly expect us to believe a single human woman, never had sex with another male? Do you take us for fools?” He looked around the crowd for support and found several people nodding in agreement.
“I have had relationships, some of those were men, however, I had never had sex with a man before Daniel, only women,” I stated again, remaining calm but unable to prevent a slight blush from creeping up my cheeks.
“I don’t believe you!” Owen sneered.
“Has my heart rate increased? Am I sweating? Are my eyes dilated? I never said I hadn’t had relationships with men, but that doesn’t mean I am lying about my sexual history. The only man I have been intimate with is Daniel.” I stated again, blushing furiously, partly in anger, partly in humiliation.
“I don’t suppose there is anyone who can confirm your story?” Owen asked, I smiled again.
“I briefly dated Elaina Johnson, whom I believe is a member of this pack? We talked a little about my previous relationships.” I offered with a shrug, enjoying watching his every attempt to trip me up fail. Owen looked feral by now, he was almost frothing at the mouth when his eyes glazed over.
“Elaina will be here shortly, we will see if she can confirm anything you have said!” He said, his eyes crazed, and glee distorting his features, so he looked insane. We sat in silence, for several agonisingly slow minutes. The doors at the back of the hall opened suddenly and Elaina strolled in, swishing her hips, mesmerising nearly every man in the audience. Even Owen was ogling her disgustingly, she flipped her hair when she reached him, the gesture screamed disrespect as she grimaced at him. “Did you date Miss Phillips?” Owen asked, he practically licked his lips with lust.
“Yes, we went on a date, before she met her mate,” Elaina replied, still clearly repulsed by the way he was looking at her.
“Only one date? And you learned about her sexual history in such a short time?” Owen asked, his eyes glued to her body.
“Yes, Charlie told me she was a late bloomer and hasn’t had many relationships,” Elaina answered, taking a step away from him. But Owen advanced on her.
“What exactly did she say?” He pressed.
“She told me she had a boyfriend in high school, but didn’t lose her virginity until college, where she discovered she was bisexual, and she had been in two serious relationships, both with women,” Elaina stated, flatly, as she moved further away from the odious man.
“How can you be sure she was telling you the truth?” He moved towards her again.
“Why would she lie?” Elaina bit back.
“Perhaps she didn’t want to be seen as promiscuous by a potential lover?” Owen smiled smugly.
“Well, I had already inferred I was no saint or nun, and if anything, Charlie came across as a little inexperienced and unsure of herself. I was the one making all the moves on her, and I turned my powers up to the max to seduce her, barely made a dent.” The room erupted in chatter. Owen looked ready to crucify someone, while Elaina shot me a wink, making it hard for me to suppress a smirk.
“ENOUGH!” Owen screamed, his face red and sweating. “You may leave.” He mumbled to Elaina, his eyes fixed on me, the fury behind them clear. “Miss Phillips, you said you had been dreaming about our Alpha, and yet you pursued a relationship with another? So, your feelings for our Alpha were not quite as strong as his were for you?” He asked with a triumphant look, believing he had truly caught me out this time.
“On the contrary, I loved and do love, Daniel, very much. But being raised to be human, with no knowledge of Lycans, or any of the other species, I believed them to just be dreams. I thought I had made him up, which is one of the reasons I pursued a relationship outside of them. I was concerned I could get lost in a relationship with a man who was a figment of my imagination, sacrificing a real relationship for an imaginary one. Had I known they were real, or that I had a fated mate out there looking for me, I would have never had relationships with anyone other than him.” I shot back, the crowd seemed to be turning in my favour, and the chatter seemed a lot less adversarial than before. Maria squeezed my shoulder gently, encouraging me to keep going.
“But those are just words!” Owen scoffed. “It seems to me you were looking for any way you could find to infiltrate our pack, first with the dreams, then with Elaina when that didn’t work and finally you found a way to get to the Alpha and sunk your claws into him. After all, didn’t he reveal our secret to you the same day he met you? Without discussing it with anyone else? Breaking one of our most important laws?” Richard leapt out of his seat, obviously seething.
“That law does not apply to mates, and you know it!” He snapped at his brother, outraged. “How else was Daniel going to convince the poor girl she hadn’t lost her mind? Or explain the pull of the mate bond to her? He had to do something to explain it all to her. Showing her his wolf was the quickest, easiest way to get her to accept him. Besides, she would have found out eventually, it’s not like humans mark each other!” Richard added to the crowd, I saw several people nodding and murmurs of agreement to his argument. “Besides, either she knew about us and was trying to infiltrate us, or she was clueless, and Daniel exposed us, you can’t have it both ways brother!” He spat, retaking his seat. The chatter increased, and several people even stood to argue with Owen. I shot a glance at Maria who was openly smirking at Owen, pleased with how the crowd was turning on him. I glanced at Ben, who merely looked distracted, I couldn’t be sure, but I had a feeling he was linking his brother, informing him of everything that was going on. The situation was devolving into chaos as more and more people started arguing, most seemed to be on my side, but I noticed there were a few, who thought the same as Owen, I was starting to get an anxiety attack from all the yelling.
“Ben, what do we do?” I begged him, terrified of what could happen if people started shifting or fighting. I really didn’t want anyone to get hurt, or to have to go through all this again. The doors to the hall burst open, loudly, forcing everyone to look away from me and towards the noise. Daniel stood in the doorway, his face a mask of fury.
“ENOUGH!” He bellowed, I couldn’t see his aura, but by the way, everyone immediately stopped talking and bared their necks I knew he had to be exerting it. “SIT DOWN NOW! ALL OF YOU!” He growled menacingly, and they all complied without hesitation.
“You have no place here; the Alpha is always barred from these proceedings so he cannot impose his will to the detriment of the pack.” Owen spat at Daniel.
“And if you could control one little meeting, I wouldn’t have to be, but order must be restored and you’re too weak to take care of it yourself. So, first things first, I move that a new chair be appointed for the remainder of this tribunal, I nominate my father, Richard, would anyone like to second my nomination?” Daniel asked the room, but his eyes remained fixed on Owen.
“I second, the nomination.” The seer stood, with a nod to Daniel.
“Splendid, any other nominations or shall we just vote?” Daniel said with a sneer.
“I was voted the chair of these proceedings and I will not forego my seat!” Owen hissed, eliciting a growl from Daniel.
“Vote it is then. All those in favour of my father taking over as chair and preventing this farce from becoming no better than a bar room brawl, raise your hand.” I watched as an obvious majority raised their hands, Owen’s face was getting redder with anger and humiliation. “All those who believe Owen should retain his seat as chair?” Daniel asked, again he didn’t turn around to look, he refused to take his eyes off his uncle for a second. Around fifteen people raised their hands. “Who had the votes brother?” Daniel asked, his eyes flickering to his wolf's.
“Gamma Richard Summer will be resuming the tribunal as its chair. Epsilon Owen Summer will stand down.” Ben replied in a clipped tone, I watched as Owen moved away from his seat, swiftly. Daniel stopped him, grabbing his arm, but whatever he said he did privately through their link. Whatever it was pissed Owen off even more as he took the seat Richard had occupied.
“It is time to leave now son,” Richard stated calmly. Daniel finally looked up at me, I managed a weak smile and a nod of my head. He returned both before striding out of the room.
