In The Beginning, Chapter 86
I was stood in the meadow with Theia, who had been teaching me about barriers, what they are made of, how I could create one, and how dangerous it could be.
“A barrier can only be created by using a part of yourself, a part of your spark. The equivalent of a drop from the ocean is all it takes, but it will become a way for Zeus, or Apollo to locate you. Now if you insist on this insanity, you must remember that a tiny amount of your spark will be enough, it will gather the electricity in the air, the charge of the atoms all around you. Until it is a semi-corporeal entity, linked to you, like when you send your powers outward, you will have to do the same with the barrier. When you have stretched to as far as you can go, you have to fix the barrier in place, or it will flow back to you like your powers.” Theia’s stern talking to was still ringing in my ears.
“I have brought my most powerful crystal.” Hyacinth nodded as she approached, her staff in hand.
“Where was that when the cottage was under attack?” I asked, remembering my dream, and the hellscape backdrop as she raised it for Theia to inspect.
“This would have done more harm than good at the cottage.” She laughed knowingly. “You’ll see.” She added, and I found myself staring at the sky, trying to decide once and for all what to do.
“I could make you a barrier?” Theia suggested, and I looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
“If he can find me using my barrier, surely, he could find me using yours?” I asked, I’d had the same argument with Daniel after I first approached Theia to teach me to create one. “Besides, this is good practise, keeping a barrier up for twenty-four hours, gotta be a test of how far my stamina has come, right?” I asked, today was Luna’s Day, and I was determined to make sure we were safe for everyone to celebrate. Hyacinth stuck the staff into the ground between us, and almost immediately I felt it pulling my power to it. Theia had an amused expression, like she was trying to work out where Hyacinth had found the unusual looking crystal.
“Okay, remember what I told you.” Hyacinth said as she held out her hands to me and Theia, the moment we connected I felt my power moving into the staff, flowing out of me in waves. I tried to focus, repeating the word ‘protection’ over and over in my mind, Hyacinth’s warnings that I had to not just want it, but feel it, own my desire to protect those I loved, to make my intention, and therefore my spell specific. So I wouldn’t just lock everyone out, without giving the pack the ability to leave.
“Now, imagine a drop of ink, falling into a cup of water, spreading. That’s it.” Theia was calling to me as the wind seemed to pick up, it took me a moment to realise it was coming from me. “NOW, draw from the crystal instead of it drawing from you!” Theia cried over the now howling wind, while I struggled to hold on. I closed my eyes, desperately trying to imagine the flow moving towards me, rather than against, clenching my teeth as the winds felt like they were battering against me. My whole-body shook violently as I struggled to turn the tide, it’s difficult to explain to someone who didn’t feel it. One moment I was struggling just to stay standing, the next, I felt something shift, and it was like I was in the eye of a hurricane, as there was a moment of absolute stillness, before I was bombarded with a strange energy from the crystal, and the wind began whipping around us so fast I worried I had created a tornado. “SEND YOUR POWER OUT, AS FAR AS YOU CAN GO!” Theia screamed, I could see Daniel tearing through the meadow towards us, and focusing on protecting him, I sent out my barrier. I was still in the meadow, but I was also in the sky, moving over the grass, and passing through every person in the pack. I may not have known everyone’s name, but after that moment, I felt like I knew their hearts and souls, their hopes and dreams, their regrets and mistakes, I knew them all as I stretched myself further than ever before, covering the pack. It felt like I was a wave depositing foam on the beach, as part of me stayed at the absolute limit of my reach, while the rest of me ebbed back to my body. The moment I returned fully to my body I felt Daniel’s hands on me, checking me over. A concerned growl rumbling in his chest as Hyacinth and Theia tried to reassure him I was fine.
“Did it work?” I asked, my voice sounding high pitched. The colour drained from Theia’s face as she looked at me. Then everything went black.
I woke up on the couch, once again Daniel and Theia were arguing in the kitchen, I tried sitting up, surprised to find my body didn’t feel like it had after I had used all my energy. I dragged myself upright and headed towards the argument.
“You knew I didn’t want her to do it, but it was just another experiment to you!” Daniel accused Theia.
“Charlie is much more than an experiment to me, I assure you. And she is doing beautifully. Yes, she pushed herself a little hard today, but she has not drained herself. She just needs to acclimatise to having so much power flowing through her at once. She will need to be able to channel much more than today if she will survive against Apollo!” Theia snapped back, both of them pausing only when they saw me in the doorway. They were on opposite sides of the breakfast bar, obviously trying to stay away from one another, Hyacinth was sat at the table with a cup of tea.
“Charlie, darling, how are you feeling?” She asked, leaving her seat and tea to put an arm around me.
“I’m fine, why what happened?” I asked, feeling well rested.
“The amount of power you were channelling... your cup overflowed, but short nap, and everything’s fine.” She obviously added the last part for Daniel’s benefit, no longer even looking at me. I raised my eyebrow in question to Daniel, who huffed reluctantly before answering.
“Your nose was bleeding, and your eyes rolled back, and your heart was beating so fast.” He whispered, but I understood, while it wasn’t the same as before, it had reminded him of it, and he was reliving the trauma of nearly losing me. I almost ran into his arms, knowing he needed my scent to calm him. His hands trembled on my back as he pulled me against him.
“I’m here, I’m fine. I love you.” I began repeating, until I heard him take a deep breath, finally able to once he knew I was going to be okay.
“I love you too.” He finally breathed against my skin, allowing me to stop my mantra. “You’ve gotta stop scaring me like this kitten.”
“I’ll stop when you do.” I teased, and I saw the smile before he could stop it, like he was surprised to be smiling, it was my favourite of his smiles. Although, the cocky one he pulls right before he punishes me is a close second... I was pulled from my dirty thoughts by Theia’s tinkling voice, which was today accompanied by actual bells, she seemed to have dozens of them on the ends of her vibrant green scarves.
“I will leave you for now. Rest before tonight’s celebration.” She said, kissing my cheek as she moved to the door.
“Are you coming? Tonight?” I asked, surprised.
“I believe the term is dropping by? I shall not stay long.” She smiled, before disappearing.
“That is also my cue. I shall see you both later.” Hyacinth added cryptically, also heading to the door, but unlike Theia, she actually walked through it, I waited until I heard the click of it shutting, before intending to ask Daniel what they were talking about, but the moment we were alone his lips crashed into mine. He pushed me back until I was against the wall, his tongue felt like it was trying to taste all of me as it invaded my mouth. I was lifted off of my feet, my shirt ripped apart, and his erection pressed against me until it felt like it was pinning me in place.
“Charlie?” He groaned in my ear as he began grinding his hips against mine until I felt lightheaded, and desperate for him to satiate the hunger he had created for him.
“Daniel!” I moaned feeling like my need for him was going to eat me alive. He spun me around, and walked me to the breakfast bar, lifting me so I was lying across it on my stomach with my legs dangling off the side. His hands moved up my thighs, and around to my stomach, buttoned my jeans, and pulled them down my thighs, he did the same with my panties, until I was bare. He let his hands roam over my body freely as he kissed his way up my spine. His fingers finally found their way between mine as he moved up the nape of my neck, filling me with one smooth motion. His fangs scraping the sides of my neck forced me to place my forehead on the counter as he began moving his hips, fighting the urge to throw my head back and moan with each jolt of pleasure that moved through me. His hand slipped down my body so he could steady my hips and control their movement as he found his rhythm. I felt his claws scrape my skin as he shared control, allowing his wolf to be with us being the only concession I could live with after his wolf asked for a more... physical relationship. “Fuck, ALPHA!” I cried as they pushed me closer to my limit, they growled together, passionate and possessive, and full of pleasure as their hips sped up, slamming into mine until I thought I was going to pass out from the intensity of it. “ALPHA!” I screamed, as my orgasm rolled over me, they grunted as they timed their thrusts with my muscle contractions, before they stuttered out their hot come inside me. Leaving me breathless, and pink cheeked, we hadn’t settled on what I would call him when his wolf was with him, one of them getting annoyed with whatever the other suggested, leaving me to try and appease whoever was upset, and mediate a truce.
“We like it when you call us Alpha.” The gravelly voice of his wolf teased, his lips brushing the shell of my ear as I felt the flush travel down my body. “We would love to make you scream it again and again, but... we need to get in the shower.” Daniel groaned, his wolf slinking back, his voice softening, his lips moving over my skin as his human side expressed his love after the roughness of his wolf.
