In The Beginning, Chapter 58

Daniel POV

Charlie was blushing adorably, while my wolf was communicating with her, and in my slightly high state, I could just watch her silently. I noticed how her eyes had sky blue highlights, and dark, almost grey blue in a ring along the outside of her iris. Her top lip was slightly thinner than her bottom lip, every twitch, and lift of the corners would send me into a daydream about feeling those lips on my skin, her voice the only thing that could bring me back down to earth, the real thing is so much better than the fantasy. She brushed a hair away from her face, letting the sheet slip, exposing her perfectly pink nipple, which was slightly hard from the fabric brushing over it. Her nipples are so sensitive, I found myself thinking as I imagined sucking on that nipple as I entered her.
“I am not doing that!” She snapped suddenly, ripping me from my fantasies, confused and upset by the horrified look on her face.
“What happened? What did he say?” I asked, while silently cursing him.
“Nothing, he just wanted to do something, I... I just can’t. It doesn’t mean I don’t care about you, but I can’t, I just can’t.” She said softly to my wolf, I felt him surge forward, my eyes must’ve changed colour because she was looking at them sadly. “We will go for a run, now if you want, and I will make time for you, I promise, there’s just a lot going on right now. And it’s easier to spend time with Daniel, you’re so big, and if I spend too much time outside in this weather, I could get sick. In the spring, we will have more time.” She started giggling to herself, suddenly.
“Did he say something funny?” I asked as he sulk back.
“No, I’m sorry, I wasn’t laughing at you.” She pulled herself together slightly. “It reminded me of the story of Hades and Persephone, which is funny, because they’re my grandparents, which is nuts! Anyway, Persephone married Hades, but her mother caused an eternal winter to force Zeus to give her daughter back to her. Neither side relented, until Persephone agreed to spend six months of the year with Hades, and six months with her mother, in the mortal realm, or Earth. We could work up something like that? Spring and summer, Wolfie gets the majority of my evenings, fall and winter, Daniel gets me, what do you think?” She asked us both.
“I’m not agreeing to anything if I only get to hear half the conversation.” I muttered, annoyed he was still blocking me.
“Your wolf is feeling left out, you used to let him out more, so he is getting frustrated, feeling leashed. He wants time with me, and time in your wolf form, which as you heard me say, isn’t easy right now-” She tried to calm me as my agitation grew.
“It’s not safe, forget easy. You are not going out there where anyone could grab you! I don’t care if my wolf abandons me, you will stay safe!” I ranted, shocking even myself, I heard my wolf whimper softly, as I backed away from her for a moment. She looked at me confused, but remained on the bed, settling back on her heels as I sat in the chair, with my head in my hands.
“Is... is it something I said?” She asked softly, I looked up at her and felt her guilt, and her fear.
“No, it’s what I said. To say you don’t care...” I couldn’t say it again, it was beyond taboo, it was the worst thing to happen to a Lycan, and in all of our histories, had only occurred a couple of times. “Did you ever see the Mummy? The movie with Brendon Frasier?” She nodded, looking at me oddly. “Do you remember them saying, when they found the Mummy, that he had been subjected to the worst curse the Ancient Egyptians could create, and there was no evidence of it ever being used before?” Again, she nodded, but wasn’t seeing how the two connected. “To say what I did, is like saying you don’t care if they did the ritual, or whatever on you.”
”You could lose your wolf?” She asked suddenly, her eyes searching mine for the truth.
“The stories are like fairy tales, but most accept that they are rooted in truth, and one says that if we offend the moon goddess with our actions, our wolves can ask that she take them away to be with her.” I admitted, as she swung her legs over the bed, I stiffened slightly, causing her to pause.
“But the realisation that you would go through that to keep me safe, has unnerved you?” She deduced, her eyes avoiding mine, which set off alarm bells in my mind.
“I love you, I would do anything for you, I just didn’t know there really isn’t anything more important to me than you, until just now, not even my wolf.” As I said it, I hear him whimper, but as we looked at Charlie, and the fear that she would leave to keep us from ripping ourselves apart increased, I could feel we were on the same page. We would do anything, endure anything for a second with her, alone or together. I rushed back to the bed, pulling her to my chest, as I sat beside her. “Don’t. It’s not going to happen, just ask him, he won’t leave, he couldn’t leave you, neither of us could. We can’t lose you, so please, don’t start thinking we would be better off without you, because we wouldn’t. Charlie, I don’t know what to say to make you believe me, but there is nothing that would make me regret being with you. I was just shocked, saying what I said, it’s worse than blasphemous, it’s not something you even tempt by saying. If the pack heard...” I felt the blood drain from my face at the thought. Her hands brought me out of my nightmarish thoughts, as she cupped my cheeks and brought my eyes to hers.
“Then neither of you say, or even think it ever again.” She said with conviction, searching my eyes for any hint of resistance. “Because it’s the same leaving me.” She whispered, before pressing her lips to mine softly, in a long, sweet kiss.
“Never.” I whispered back, when our lips parted, I felt my wolf surge forward, as gently as he could, he tucked her hair behind her ear. She smiled at us, he put our head on her chest, listening to her steady heartbeat for a moment, before nuzzling into her neck and chest affectionately.
“I love you too.” She giggled at him, before he faded back, and she was looking at me with the same smile on her face. “Your turn.” She smiled, and I looked at her confused. “I told you I wanted to hear about your stress, so spill.” She ordered, and I found myself smiling despite myself.
“Where should I start?” I teased, but she shot me a look that killed the smile on my lips.
“How about we start with what woke you up so early on a Sunday morning?” She asked, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
“There was an incident in the prison. Owen tried to kill himself.” I admitted, but it was far from my only issue.
“Is he alive?” She asked softly.
“Yes, they knocked him out with a sedative, before he could put the noose around his neck.” I nodded, struggling to find the words to fully explain.
“But now you have guilt and apprehension, as well as a million other thoughts and feelings about his execution later.” She finished for me, nodding slightly.
“Yeah...” I confessed, feeling a little naked with how easily she read me. “And the elders are being stubborn about letting Warren come to the pack, but the seer needs to meet with him to get a read on him, and they won’t allow her to go to him.” I sighed.
“Allow her?” Charlie asked with a raised eyebrow.
“She offered to go to him, but they don’t believe it’s safe. While only I could officially forbid her from meeting him, going against the elders wishes won’t win her any favours.” I explained as best I could, but Lycan politics is just as complicated as human ones.
“So, what’s their solution?” She asked, letting her annoyance slide.
. “They don’t have one, and neither do I.” I sighed, leaning on the headboard and pulling her closer.
“But it’s not everything... it’s not the reason you were glued to your phone when I woke up.” She stated bluntly, waiting for me to explain.
“When we were talking about the attack, Kyle mentioned the surveillance cameras in the bridal store, we got the idea to try to trace the company back to Apollo, Zeus, whomever, to see if that’s how they’ve been spying on us. But we’ve hit a snag, the company that makes the cameras, is owned by a shell company that’s only other product is the digital storage of the footage. It is one in a long line of subsidiaries owned by a company that doesn’t exist, apart from on the paperwork for said companies, no website, no address, no information at all. So, we tried tracking down employees, anyone on the board of directors, or the owner, or something, at any of these companies, that we could track to another company. But the people on the board, well those we could find, don’t exist either, no photos, no bios, we can’t even tell if half of the companies are in the US or not.” I grumbled, getting frustrated with the lack of information we had been able to uncover.
“Theia did say something about Zeus and Apollo having many companies... have you tried looking into the more public ones?” She asked, and I found myself frowning trying to follow her train of thought. “They’re narcissists, they name everything after themselves, so search all of their names, and look into those companies first, you might find a name you recognise from one of those shell companies? You can cross reference them with companies that have a link to their fake histories, use the myths to track them down?” She asked, as she made her way into the bathroom.
