In The Beginning, Chapter 11 - Pray To God
Charlie POV
I led Ben into the kitchen, unsure how much I should tell him, but without knowing where else to start, I had to tell him something.
“Last night, I turned 25.” I said slowly, he nodded, he knew this. “At the moment of my birth, a spell blocking my powers was broken.” More nods. “I think... umm, because Daniel and I...” I couldn’t actually say it, looking into his earnest, interested eyes. “M-m-marked each other, and completed the bond.” He took a seat, allowing me to go at my own pace. “I think it affected him too.” I said finally, but still he said nothing, he knew there was more. “Actually, I know he felt it, and the effect it had on him. And I know he tried to distribute the power through the pack, or rather, his wolf did, because Daniel wasn’t awake for any of it.” I ended with a squeak. I turned my back to the man who I considered a friend, heading for the coffee machine. It’s not that I don’t like sex, I do, especially with Daniel, but talking about something so intimate, made me uncomfortable. So, I was grateful to have something to focus on, and making sense of Daniel’s machine certainly warranted focus. It had taken me a few times to get it right that morning, but I was confident enough to make two lattes on the intimidating contraption. By the time I had finished pouring our drinks, my face was closer to it’s usual colour, but I was still a little uncomfortable. I took the seat opposite him at the kitchen table.
“You know what I’m going to ask, right?” Ben smiled, trying to reassure me.
“How do I know?” I asked, as my latte suddenly became fascinating.
“Exactly.” He replied with a chuckle.
“He showed me.” I whispered.
“Showed you?” Ben asked, whatever he was expecting, it wasn’t that.
“I think his wolf tried to show him, and I sorta got taken along too?” I really was trying to explain, but nothing was coming out right.
“Daniel’s wolf, tried to show him what happened during the missing time everyone has from last night?” Ben tried to clarify and understand himself.
“Yes.” I nodded.
“How did you see it then?” He asked, his mind unable to make the connections.
“Daniel can send images sometimes, through the link. He’s only done it a couple of times, and before last night it was just a flash. Like a thought that popped up out of nowhere, except, I knew it was Daniel, because I could feel him. And then last night, I saw everything, from his perspective, or his wolf’s, I’m really not sure, it’s confusing.” I replied, unable to maintain eye contact, when Ben looked like his eyes were trying to escape his head.
“That’s never been done before.” He said finally, after a very long pause. “The most powerful wolf in all of our histories couldn’t do that, Charlie, we can’t tell anyone else about this.” Ben suddenly announced, frightening me.
“Why? Who is going to care if Daniel can send images as well as words?” I asked, it had been a very stressful morning and I was jittery from drinking so many lattes in my attempt to perfect my technique.
“Sending images as well as words gives our pack a tactical advantage. Eric wasn’t the only wolf out there who has a fascination with powers and collecting people who can further their packs fortunes.” Ben said cryptically, I leaned back in my chair, folding my arms and narrowing my eyes, while I thought about how much more to disclose. “Okay, look, Daniel didn’t want you worrying, especially before you even know for sure what you are, but since we seem to have definitive proof high as a kite upstairs, you might as well know.” He stood and paced a few times back and forth the table, unsure how I had convinced him to talk, I stayed silent. “Alright, you heard my mother say she was ‘part of the greatest wolf dynasty the world has ever seen’?” He asked, monotone, like he had heard the words too many times to count, his eyes rolling involuntarily half way through, forcing me to supress a smile. I nodded, yes, I had many, many questions about all that, I thought, but kept it to myself. “Well, there are other families that would love to steal that title for themselves. You see it’s not just that our great, great grandmother was a pureblood high Fae, her mate Thomas, was a direct descendant of the last Lycan King, Odin Borrson. So, their union was epic, at the time anyway, and there are other descendants of Odin who resent our family’s luck.”
“So, you’re telling me, you and Daniel are descendants of the Norse God?” I asked, utterly baffled.
“Yes and no. Odin wasn’t a God, he was Lycan, and our King. Humans who lived within his kingdom worshipped him, but Lycans knew he wasn’t a God, he was just exceptionally strong.” Ben dismissed with a wave of his hand. I was starting to feel dizzy. “The point is, if people find out about this, it wouldn’t help us convince wolves to listen to us, they could think Daniel is making a play for power.” Ben added, after seeing my face.
“Okay, we keep it to ourselves.” I agreed with a nod. “What about the other stuff?” I asked, it was Ben’s turn to be confused. “Daniel was affected by my powers being released; it’s done something to both of us.” I whispered.
“For now, let’s keep that between the two of us also. We don’t want people to panic, call me when Daniel returns to earth, and I will come back with Maria tonight, we can decide what to tell who, okay?” He asked, a small smile on his face.
“Yes, thank you Ben. I’m sorry, it’s just been a stressful few... weeks, I don’t even know anymore, I probably just need some sleep.” I added feeling foolish for insisting he come over.
“We will sort this all out, I promise.” He added with a smile, before he headed for the front door. I decided to go take a shower to try and stop my mind from racing with scenarios, ifs and maybes haunting me.
Ben left the pack house more concerned than ever, his earlier good mood at seeing his brother look so unbelievably intoxicated gone with the realisation that their lives were forever changed. He drove to the office completely preoccupied, but his wife was planning on going to the city, so at least he had that to look forward to. He dialled her number as he got onto the freeway.
“Hey baby, everything alright with Charlie?” Her voice flittered through the car’s speakers, making him smile.
“Urgh, to be determined. That’s why I called, wanna join me for lunch today? I could pick your brain on a few things?” He asked hopefully.
“Shall I pick up something on my way? Or do you want to go out?” She asked.
“Let’s eat in my office, I will hold all my calls, and we have less chance of being overheard.” He replied, he didn’t want to say too much on the phone, the latest news had him feeling paranoid.
“Okay, I’ll pick something up on my way then.” She replied, picking up on his lack of details.
“Park in my spot, I’ll be working in Daniel’s office for most of the day.” He decided, realising his brother wouldn’t be in work again, it was easier handling things from his office.
“Ah, Daniel isn’t coming in today then.” Maria responded knowingly.
“It’s not like that, I’ll explain later.” He smiled, picturing her face.
“Intrigue?” She teased, and he couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him. “See you later.”
“Yeah, bye babe.” He replied, hanging up, and in a much better mood, he just had to hold things together a little longer, he thought to himself, taking a deep breath and putting his foot down, invigorated for the day again.
Meanwhile...
Kyle hadn’t returned from training since Sunday, she had heard from her daughter that several of the Eta’s who were training to be Zeta’s had gone on a special mission, and wouldn’t be returning until the next day. She tried not to worry as she thought about his desire to always do better, and allowed her nursing duties to keep her occupied. Her guest had not awoken, despite it being two days since she found him on her doorstep. His many wounds had mostly healed, after they had been cleaned and dressed, and she had covered him with a blanket. More than once she had wet the poor creatures lips, the cracked, dry skin made her wince every time she looked at it. Having little to do with many of his injuries curing themselves, she sat with a cup of coffee and tried to decide for the hundredth time whether to go to the Beta and report her strange guest, and what he had said, or not, and risk her Luna. A wave of determination swept over her, she slammed her mug down fully intending to report everything, and take whatever punishment the Gods deemed fit, when the stranger coughed and groaned.
“W-w-wat-ach... water, please...” He wheezed, making it sound like he was extending the word. Evie jumped up and brought a fresh cold glass to his lips. He gripped her wrist tightly, pushing her away after a short sip, he coughed and winced before taking more of the cool clear liquid. The sensation of it on his parched throat was hard to describe, but it brought forth images of dried cracked earth softening, and melting together under a heavy downpour. He took great, big, gulping breathes when he had drained the glass, almost like he could for the first time, his injuries were painful, but manageable, thanks to his host. He managed to sit up, swinging his legs off of the couch, and sitting up in front of Evie, who was knelt at his feet. He took a deep breath in, and his muscles started filling out, expanding on the gaunt and skeletal frame, to a much healthier standard. He ran his hands through his grey matted hair, it turned a deep chestnut brown, with blonde highlights, untangled itself, and fell in soft waves close to his head. His eyes flashed a soft lavender colour, and when he smiled at Evie, and her fears disappeared.
