In The Beginning, Chapter 44

Daniel POV

It had been months since I trained with our warriors, between looking for and finding Charlie. I had gone to a few different human gyms, but I hadn’t been able to use all my strength, so I was a little worried I was out of shape. The men, however, were in peak condition, something that brought me pride as we sparred. Robert and Bailey were the only two that went full out while fighting me, but I still managed to make them submit. After that I spent a bit of time on the punch bags until I had used up all of my aggression, I ran to the training grounds, and the run back helped clear my head a little more. I just needed a bit of time with my mate so I could deal with the mess Eric had left without losing my cool. When I got back to the house, Charlie was in the kitchen, looking extremely sad.
“What happened?” I asked, kneeling between her legs at the kitchen table. She wrapped her arms around me for a moment, then she silently led me upstairs, into the bathroom, and turned the shower on. She dropped my robe from her heavenly body, and peeled my wet things off, leading me into the shower, she waited until I was washing her hair to tell me everything Ben had told her. Knowing full well that giving me something to do, like looking after her, would distract me enough to keep my temper in check. But by the time she was done my hands were vibrating in anger. We bathed each other, her hands calming my angry tremors as we went. When we were done, she asked me to help her with her lotion, and other beauty bits, not that she needed any of it. The distraction, and her body kept me calm, by the time we were dressed, I heard the ladies downstairs, preparing for their day. Charlie led me downstairs, my mind still reeling from everything I’d learned.
“Good morning, Kathy.” I heard Charlie call happily as we entered the kitchen. “Oh, Annie, those biscuits, and pot roast were amazing, thank you.” She gushed at the women, who wore matching grins as she sat at the counter before them. “I’m not sure if you are aware, but we will be receiving a large number of wolves today, and they will need something warm and full of nutrients. I’m not sure if the pack has anywhere that could produce food for around 200? But if there is, they will need you both to help.” Charlie explained, while I watched her completely enamoured, she knew I was still trying to figure out where to put them all and had taken on the responsibility for feeding them without question. “I can help, I can prepare, chop, whatever, put me to work, even if it’s just finding a kitchen big enough, and supplies. Today I am yours to command.” She said honestly to Kathy, who visibly baulked at the idea of commanding her Luna.
“Lu- Miss Charlie, I- I couldn’t!” She finally stuttered out. “But the kitchen at the meeting hall is set up for large events, we could move there?” Kathy looked at me for permission.
“Don’t look at me, Charlie is running this show, I have to find somewhere for everyone to sleep.” I teased, my chest puffing in pride at my little mate, I placed a kiss on her hair affectionately, while she blushed.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep, I just thought Kathy would be the best person to run the food side of things.” Charlie whispered through the link.
“You are being their Luna; you don’t have to apologise for that.” I replied, kissing her lips softly. Her cheeks grew darker when she noticed the females watching us, once again Kathy handed Charlie her coffee before making mine, and I got to enjoy her coffee ritual.
“Umm, Alpha?” Kathy interrupted by unabashed admiration of my mate.
“Yes Kathy?” I asked, feeling a little calmer knowing the ladies had at least one thing covered.
“We will need a few extra hands, to prepare food for so many.” She explained respectfully, as always.
“You have my permission to redirect anyone you need from their official duties.” I smiled. “Just let me or Charlie know what you need, and we will arrange it.”
“Well, we will need meat and vegetables delivered to the meeting hall, bread, extra hands in the kitchen, and someone to set up the chairs and tables. We have enough crockery there.” She began listing, I saw Charlie pull out her phone to get it all down, even adding some extra items Kathy wouldn’t be aware were needed, like blankets, medical supplies, and cots for those that needed sleep.
“We should have some people there just to make and hand out hot drinks too, many will be cold from travelling on foot.” Charlie added as she typed, but the ladies looked shocked that any were attempting the journey without a vehicle. “I think a nourishing soup might be best, or a stew or something?” She looked up from her phone to see the women’s expressions for the first time. Jumping from her seat she walked around to embrace them all. “These people need our help, not our pity, we will do what we must to not only make them feel welcome, but to get them back on their feet. I know I’m asking a lot, but we all need to keep out emotions in check.” She sighed, she received a wave of nods in response as some wiped tears from their eyes, soon the sea of hurt faces became one of determination. “Okay, ladies, let's get to work!” Charlie added cheerfully, encouraging the rest to smile too.
“I’m going to go make some calls, and link the pack, let them know what’s coming.” I informed Charlie with a kiss.
“Before you go, who do I call about getting supplies delivered to the meeting hall?” She asked me, holding up her phone. I chuckled as I typed in the number of the town’s market, she pecked my cheek as she took back the phone and began calling the number. I slipped my credit card into her free hand as I took my coffee into the office. Thirty minutes later, I had informed the pack, sent reinforcements to the meeting hall. When I went back to the kitchen, Charlie was finishing up her call, Kathy and the other ladies were already gone.
“I think we have enough food; Kathy went to see Evie, they will coordinate the women at the hall, and get things started. Did you arrange blankets yet?” She asked, typing something on her phone.
“I’ve asked the doctors to take care of that, a team will be at the meeting hall to assess, only those in dire need will be transported to the hospital-” I answered, only to be interrupted by a knock at the door. Bewildered, I went to answer it, indicating for Charlie to stay where she was. I began walking towards the door when I heard her squeak in surprise.
“Pinchas? What the hell are you doing here!?” Charlie cried.
“Ah, well, that’s rather a long story, and from what I understand you both have quite a lot on your plates. So, I will say, I know you have been training, with your aunt, that’s good, because Apollo and Zeus know you exist now, and Apollo is on the hunt for you, with his father’s blessing.” Pinchas admitted with a sigh. “I would have come sooner, but your aunt turned up, and it would have been... unpleasant if we ran into each other.”
“Why?” Charlie demanded, folding her arms over her chest and cocking an eyebrow at him, I had to hold back my snicker at her pissed off glare, it’s amusing when you aren’t the one receiving it.
“Why...?” He asked, nonplussed by her anger, big mistake, I could almost see her power crackling through the tension in the air.
“Why don’t you want to see Theia? Because that is a huge red flag I’m not going to ignore.” She threatened, her skin began to glow softly.
“Because she blames me for the death of her son, and his father. I blame me too if it means anything to her.” He said defeated. “I should have stopped them; I should’ve done more.” I watched Charlie’s emotions flicker, from distrustful and wary to sympathetic, and back to wary.
“How do Apollo and Zeus know about me? And how do you know, they know?” She asked, her eyes narrowed in suspicion.
“They know because one of Apollo’s sons was in Ireland, he was the one directing the creatures, and he saw you destroy them, and I know because I have been spying on them for millenniums, trying to undo my mistake.” He said as he turned to look into her eyes, I growled warningly, and moved between them. He held up his hands slowly. “I just... I need to help end them; I need to make things right!” He pleaded with Charlie to understand.
“Then tell me who you are, I can’t trust you if you’re not honest with me.” Charlie challenged.
“I’m your cousin, isn’t that enough?” He asked, her unimpressed expression spoke volumes. He sighed and rubbed a hand down his face. “The name my mother gave me was Romulus, my twin, Remus and father, were killed by Zeus. My mother is Theia.” He whispered, his glamour fading as he spoke. The real Pinchas, or Romulus, was around 6’ 3”, he had dark brown hair, with a white-blonde streak in the centre of his forehead, his hair hung just above his shoulders. He was athletic, and his muscles defined, but not bulky, his skin was a warm cappuccino colour, but his eyes were an intense, dark, purple blue. “This is the real me.” He shrugged, and Charlie moved around me slowly, keeping her hand on my arm to keep me calm.
“Your mother misses you. You should talk to her; she will be here this afternoon to teach me, you could try then?” She suggested, her voice conveying her sympathy.
“I can’t. But I wish you luck, you will need it. Zeus is patient, he has a plan, and he doesn’t care how long it will take for him to complete it. Apollo is much more impulsive, he will attack soon, you need to be prepared, but don’t make the mistake of believing his impatience makes him stupid. He will test your defences before he strikes, he may even try to take your most valuable piece from the board,” his eyes shot to me, “before he attacks you directly. I will return if I discover any more information, I wish you well, cousin.” And with that he was gone, leaving Charlie and I alone again.
