BK 4 - Chapter 22 - Day Before the Funeral
Jayce and Kierstern were both having the typical pain and sickness that came after being marked. Lisa stayed by Jayce's side and worked on her research. She'd also been in contact with Wesley, who said he hadn't had any luck finding any laws that pertain to protecting shifters, vampires, and witches. He did find laws that said any and all beasts need to be killed immediately. It even listed the best ways to kill them.
These laws were hidden to prevent them from being public knowledge. However, if someone did kill what these laws considered beasts, the human would be protected. Wesley was impressed with Lisa's idea of looking into the indigenous tribes. He said he would help by finding every relevant law he could find and send to her.
Alex and Lisa decided to keep their mates at the pool house so they could be relatively alone while going through the hard part of transitioning. Roger's funeral was scheduled for the next day, so they hoped Kiersten and Jayce were well enough to go. It was going to be a difficult day and even more so if their mates couldn't be there.
"How are you feeling?" Lisa asked as she sat down on the side of the bed. Jayce smiled at her.
"I'm actually starting to feel better. It feels like I had a bad case of the flu, and I'm finally coming down from it. I'm glad it doesn't last long." He pulled Lisa down on the bed and wrapped his arms around her. When he first started feeling sick, he thought he was going to die, but he had tried to play it off so Lisa wouldn't think he was weak.
"Well, I can tell you're better. This morning you looked like the better side of roadkill." Lisa laughed when Jayce looked at her in disbelief.
"Hey, I thought my acting skills were better than that. Did I really look that bad?" He asked, feeling slightly embarrassed that she might think he wasn't the man she thought he was. Lisa smiled as she ran her hand over his cheek.
"I could feel your pain through the mate bond. We may not be fully mated yet, but I can still feel what you feel. Don't ever think you have to pretend with me. I want to know what you're feeling so I can help you through it. The rest won't be as tough. When you shift for the first time, it will hurt, but after that, it will get easier," She replied.
"I love you, my lioness," He said, rolling over so she was on top of him.
"I love you too, but we don't have time for any funny business. My brother and Kiersten are in the next room, and we have research to do. After the funeral tomorrow, we need to focus on completing what Grandpa Roger started before we return to campus." Lisa started to get up, but Jayce stopped her. He pulled her down so he could kiss her in the way that made her forget everything else.
"I'll give you a pass this time, but I needed a kiss to heal me the rest of the way," Jayce said as he pulled her down for another kiss. Lisa giggled and then pulled him out of the bed.
"How about we make breakfast for dinner? Are you hungry?" She asked as they walked out of the room.
"Starving," They went downstairs and were surprised to see Alex and Kiersten already there.
"I thought you'd be in bed until at least tomorrow morning," Lisa said to Kiersten.
"I don't feel bad anymore. Dr. Parkins said my transition may be a little quicker than expected since I'm carrying a cub. Alex was just getting ready to make us something to eat." Kiersten smiled in Lisa's direction. She couldn't wait to get her bear, and hopefully, she'd be able to see again, at least through her bear.
"I'll help you. Lisa said she wanted breakfast for dinner. Are you two okay with that?" Jayce asked, making his way into the kitchen where Alex was. Kiersten nodded.
"Sounds good to me," Alex said, pulling the eggs and sausage out of the refrigerator. While the men prepared dinner, Lisa sat next to Kiersten at the kitchen table.
"Who would have thought we'd have our men whipped already, cooking for us when we snap our fingers?" Lisa said to Kiersten loud enough for Jayce and Alex to hear.
"Watch it, or I will make sure you don't get any sausage," Alex said, knowing that Lisa would fight anyone who tried to keep her from the sausage.
"Go ahead and try, and I'll rip your lips off your face so you won't ever be able to kiss Kiersten again," Lisa glared at him. No one better mess with her sausage. Kiersten and Jayce laughed at the sibling's banter. They'd come to realize rather quickly that this was their normal.
Jayce and Alex made waffles, sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs. Everything was so good Lisa didn't talk the entire meal.
"If I knew that was all it took to shut you up, I would have made you breakfast every day," Alex said with a smirk, putting his arm around Kiersten.
"If I would have known that's what it took to have you make breakfast every morning, I would have been ten times worse." Lisa joked, making everyone laugh, including her brother. As annoying as his sister could be, he wouldn't change her for the world.
The two couples went to bed soon after dinner. Tomorrow was going to be hard on Alex and Lisa. They were glad they had mates to help them through it.
_____________
Breanne looked at herself in the mirror. She had left Lisa and Alex alone for the most part, knowing they needed time alone with their mates now that she understood what having mates meant.
She was still determined to find her mate. Breanne believed with every fiber of her being that there was someone out there looking for her. After finding out about Lisa and her family, she had done research on shifters, vampires, and witches. Some of the things she read were horrendous, but she didn't believe any of them. They looked more like a kid's nightmare than the loving family she now called her own.
Breanne pushed her dark brown hair out of her face and sighed. Who was she kidding? Even if she did have a mate out there, she figured they would be too disappointed in her to claim her as their mate.
As she lay in bed, she couldn't help thinking about all the wonderful things she had learned about being mated. The sparks and thrill of knowing you found the one person meant to be yours. Breanne pictured what her mate looked like. Would he be tall or short? Blonde hair or dark hair? The possibilities were endless.
Lisa had told her about looking into the Native American tribes. Breanne thought it was a good place to start. Her mind then started thinking about Native American history and the belief that they could shapeshift. She wondered if her mate was on a reservation somewhere, and that was why she hadn't met him yet.
Breanne groaned as she rolled over. She needed to stop obsessing over finding her mate. Maybe she didn't have one. Maybe she was just a boring human meant to live out a boring human life. That thought depressed her. As she fell asleep, her last thought was what species her mate would be.
