BK 5 - Chapter 65 - Surprising Arrivals
The next day, Emma and Roger could tell they would be attacked at any time. They could feel it in the way their bodies were reacting. Everything they had learned from Atzi's book was running through their heads. Asher and Mariam had gotten their bears and the couples were now fully mated. Their cousins who had met their mates were also fully mated, except for Johnny, who had only been marked the day before.
"We need to get all the family here together. We should all be prepared," Roger said as the four of them sat in the garden. Asher and Mariam could feel their mate's anxiety through the mate bond. They had also discovered they had a little magic now that they were fully mated.
"We need everyone to come to the house. The attack will happen at any time. Roger and I can feel it. If there's anyone you know who can't get my mindlink, please call them. We all need to stick together." Emma sent out a family-wide mindlink and received many responses.
"What else can we do to prepare?" Asher asked. He loved being able to speak and hear, especially when he thought about what was coming for them. Emma leaned against him and sighed.
"Unfortunately, we don't know. We have never dealt with anything like this. Our family is used to dealing with people who abuse their children or spouses. They've dealt with the trafficking of humans and shifters. There have been hunters that came for us. Being attacked by someone from the underworld was never something we imagined. Atzi knew it was coming. She also knew it would take a large family like ours to defeat them. I just hope it's enough. We have the four of us with magic. Petra, Isla, and the three dragons. That's a lot of magic. Everyone else is strong and can fight, too." Emma replied. She was so scared someone would get killed.
"We will win. We have to. If nothing else, we can put Grandma Cat on them. I've never met anyone she couldn't charm into doing exactly what she wanted them to do," Roger said as they all chuckled. Grandma Cat was one of a kind. She could make even the strongest of men fall to their knees and bow to her. She may not have magic, but what she had was even more powerful: love for her family.
"Hello, are we in the right place?" They all jumped up when they heard a woman's voice they didn't recognize. Two beautiful women were walking toward them. One had waist-length blonde hair, and the other had short curly black hair. They weren't coming from the driveway but from the back of the property.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here?" Roger asked, putting his arm around Mariam.
"I'm Pricilla, and I'm a witch." The woman with black hair said as they approached the others.
"I'm Lidia, and I'm a phoenix." They all look at the blonde with their mouths open. They had never met a phoenix. She had amber eyes with hints of orange that reminded them of fire.
"Why are you here?" Emma asked. A witch and phoenix could be on either side, so she wanted to ensure they were with them and not against them. However, nothing she felt coming from them was bad.
"Selene reached out to us to see if we could help. We have experience fighting demons and others from the underworld. Lidia and I are orphans who found each other when we were teenagers. Both of our families were killed by demons because of our power. Even though my magic is pure, I can do black magic." Pricilla explained. Lidia nodded next to her.
"Demons killed my family because we're more powerful than the normal phoenix. We can turn a demon into ash and send them back to hell. Most people like me have magic and fire, but they're not usually strong enough to counter the underworld," Lidia said, smiling. Suddenly, there was a large commotion from the house. They all turned and saw two men running full speed toward them.
"Russ, Samson, what's going on?" Roger asked with concern. Why were they looking at Priscilla and Lidia like that? The brothers spoke simultaneously when they stopped in front of the two women.
"Mate." Roger and the others relaxed. The dragon brothers had met their mates. Pricilla looked at the man in front of her who had just called her his mate. He was gorgeous. She crossed her arms in front of her.
"You say I'm your mate. My name is Pricilla, and I'm a witch. What are you?" she asked, tapping her foot. Russ stared at the petite ball of fire and felt like kissing her. She was gorgeous.
"I'm Russ and a dragon." He replied. It was the first time he wondered if it would be enough. Most people love dragons, but what if she wasn't one of them. Priscilla shrugged and threw her arms around his neck.
"Okay, you'll do. I never thought I'd be someone's mate." Russ sighed with relief as he held her against him. Sparks flooded their bodies, and Priscilla giggled. "Wow, I never thought the whole spark thing was real."
Samson couldn't take his eyes off Lidia. She stared at him, and the orange in her eyes became more prominent.
"What are you?" Samson asked her softly. Lidia bit her lip nervously. Some people were intimidated because she was a phoenix. She wanted to run into his arms. She had hoped for so long that she'd eventually find her mate. What if he didn't want her?
"I'm Lidia, and I'm a phoenix," she answered, looking down at her feet. She wasn't usually that unsure of herself, but she feared rejection. Samson touched her chin and raised her face to look into his eyes.
"I'm Samson. I'm a dragon and Russ's brother. Did you guys come to help, too?" he asked gently. Lidia's face lit up. She and Pricilla both have dragon mates, and they're brothers. They can be part of the same family. That's the one thing they both wanted: family.
"Yes, Selene sent us. We've fought demons before." Lidia answered as Samson took her hand in his. She smiled brightly, letting the fire in her eyes show even more.
"I know this is rude, but if you're going to accept each other, can you go ahead and mark one another? It will strengthen your powers." Emma asked them.
"Yes, can you mark each other, and can I watch?" Everyone jumped as Penelope seemed to appear from nowhere.
"How do you do that? You're only four." Roger asked her. She giggled as she walked toward the new mates.
"Ignore him. My name is Penelope, and this is my home. If you mark each other, can I watch?" She asked excitedly. Emma and Roger groaned while the others stared at the pup in shock.
"What is your fascination with watching everyone mark each other?" Emma asked her. Penelope turned to look at her.
"None of you let me watch, and you won't tell me how you did it. I need to do my research by watching. I want to know how to do it when I meet my mate. What if he's not a wolf? Then I need to know what will happen. So can I watch?" Penelope turned to the two couples, who were still too stunned to move. Russ and Samson had seen her with their sister and had laughed at how blunt she was. However, it was completely different to be on the receiving end.
"What do you know about research?" Roger asked. Penelope rolled her eyes.
"I told you, I hear things that people don't know. I know all the hiding places in everyone's houses. One day, I'm going to be a spy," she answered. Pricilla and Lidia exchanged a look. Neither was used to being around pups or other children, but they already loved Penelope.
"You are amazing," Pricilla said, pulling one of Penelope's curls. The pup giggled and clapped her hands.
"Does that mean I can watch?" She asked, giving them her best puppy dog eyes. The two women looked at their mates. How could anyone say no to that face?
"I'm okay with doing it now," Lidia told Samson.
"Me too," Pricilla said. Russ and Samson needed no further encouragement. They weren't entirely comfortable doing it with others watching, but they would do whatever their mates wanted.
"Yay, sit here and take turns so I can watch you both," Penelope pulled them over to a picnic table.
"I think she really does run this family," Asher whispered to Emma. Penelope turned to him and smiled.
"I told you I do." She replied.
"Come on, Russ, let's not disappoint the pup," Pricilla said, turning to face him.
"How do witches mark their mates?" Penelope asked.
"Watch and learn, little one," Pricilla replied, winking at her. "Bite me, Russ."
Pricilla tilted her head. Samson had never seen anyone make Russ speechless, but the witch and the pup had done it. He'd barely said two words since they came outside.
Russ bit into Pricilla's neck while she began saying the bonding spell. She added a little sparkle for Penelope's benefit. The sparkles swirled around them as the sparks from their mating filled their bodies. When Russ pulled back, he kissed her lips.
"Wow, that was awesome," Penelope said. She looked at Samson and Lidia. "Do you think you can do better?"
"I didn't know it was a competition," Samson replied as he and Lidia turned to face each other.
"You do now," Penelope said. Lidia smiled at her. She had some tricks up her sleeve, too.
"I think we got this. You mark me first," She tilted her head, and Samson leaned forward to bite into her neck. Lidia felt the heat and sparks flood her body, and it took everything inside of her not to moan. When he pulled away, Lidia got on his lap. She wrapped her arms and legs around Samson before turning to Penelope.
"Are you ready?" She asked her. Penelope nodded excitedly.
Lidia closed her eyes, and suddenly, she and Smason rose from the table into the air. She bit into his neck when they were about ten feet off the ground. Her body started glowing bright orange, and then it looked like she and Samson were a ball of flames. The fire began to fade away the closer they got to the others. When their feet touched the ground, Lidia pulled back. Everyone was staring at them in shock, even Pricilla, who had known Lidia for a while.
"You win, you definitely win," Penelope said. Before they had time to say anything else, the ground began to shake.
Multiple earthquakes hit northern California one after the other. News reports asked if it was the end of the world. The werelion family knew it could be the end if they couldn't stop them.
