BK 5 - Chapter 2 - Intruder

It was the first day of classes, and after everyone left to go to the campus or work, Kiersten was home alone. Alex was taking as many classes online as possible so he could stay with her. The first day, he had to go in, though. She couldn't help feeling slightly jealous that other women would be looking at him. She could only see him when she shifted into her grizzly Malia. She had no fear that he would cheat on her, but she would miss him. They hadn't been apart for more than a few hours since they met.

Kirsten decided to do a little unpacking in their bedroom. She couldn't see, and it was a new place, but she figured the best way to get used to her surroundings was to start cleaning up. She opened a box of clothes and began putting them away. She kept running into things, but after the first few times, she started learning where things were so she would miss them.

Once she had worked for a couple of hours, she was ready to take a break and get something to eat. As she prepared to open the bedroom door, she paused. Was that a noise in the other room? She listened, and there was definitely someone out there moving things.

*"Can you tell who it is? No one should be home yet?"* She mindlinked her bear.

*"They're human, and the scent isn't familiar. Stay in here."* Kiersten was scared. How did someone get into their house? They'd just moved in yesterday, so who would even know they were there?

*"Should I call the police?"* She pulled her phone out of her pocket.

*"Yeah, since they're human, that's probably best."* Kiersten felt along the wall until she reached the corner on the other side of the room. She called 9-1-1 using the emergency button on the side of her phone.

"What's your emergency?" The person answered. Kiersten whispered into the phone.

"Someone broke into my house." She said.

"Ma'am, did you say someone is in your house? Are you able to get out?" Kiersten felt like crying. Can't they just send someone? Why did they need her to talk?

"Yes, someone is in my house. I can't leave; I'm in the downstairs bedroom. Can you send someone, please?" Kiersten whispered again. She could still hear the person riffling through things, and it sounded like they were getting closer.

"They're already en route to you. Just stay on the phone with me. Is there somewhere you can hide?" Kiersten didn't know. She couldn't see anything.

"I'm blind, and we just moved in yesterday. The closet is on the other side of the room, and I'm scared I'll bump something if I move." She slid down and sat on the floor in the corner. Once again, she felt helpless because of her blindness. If she could see, she would know if there was a way to escape.

"Just stay where you are. The police are just around the corner. They'll be there in two minutes." Kiersten didn't say anything. The person was still out there; she could hear them almost to her door. Suddenly, the sound of sirens filled the air. She breathed a sigh of relief. She heard the person run, and the front door slammed shut.

"The police are here, but I just heard someone run out the front door," Kiersten told the operator as she stood up. She wanted to go to the other room and greet the police, but she was shaking too badly.

"I told the officers that the person ran. They say they're following someone they think might be him on foot. Another officer is coming into your house now. I told her you're in the downstairs bedroom." The operator replied. Kiersten heard a knock on the bedroom door, and she almost collapsed.

"Police." A woman's voice said from the other side.

"Come in," Kiersten replied.

"Hello, I'm Officer Kelly Peterson. You can come out now." Kiersten started to walk forward, but her legs almost gave out. She couldn't hold back her tears anymore and started crying from the fear she'd felt. The officer ran to her side and put an arm around her.

"Thank you for coming so quickly. I'm blind and pregnant with twins. I didn't know what to do." Officer Peterson led her to the living room and helped her sit on the couch.

"You did the right thing calling us. We have two officers following a man we saw running down the street. Can you tell me what happened?" Kiersten wiped away her tears and nodded.

"We just moved in yesterday, and while everyone was gone, I wanted to unpack a few things. I was finishing up mine and Alex's clothes when I decided to take a break. Before I opened the door, I could hear someone going through our things. I went to the corner of the bedroom and called 9-1-1. I could hear the person getting closer to the bedroom just before you showed up. When I heard the sirens, the person started running, and the front door slammed shut." Kiersten's heart was finally starting to beat normally.

"There are a few things strewn about, but I don't know if it was already like that. Is there anyone who can come home to tell us if anything is missing?" Officer Peterson asked.

"My family is all at the university or working. Let me call Alex and see if he can come home. I know he's in class, but he'll be upset if I don't tell him what happened. He worries about me, especially now that we're expecting twins." Kiersten pulled out her phone. She would have mindlink Alex, but the officer may have gotten suspicious. Alex picked up on the first ring.

"Kiersten, is everything okay?" He sounded scared, and she couldn't help crying again.

"No. Someone broke into the house while I was putting things away in the bedroom. The police are here, and some are chasing a guy who was running away. I know this is your first day of classes, but can you come home to see if anything is missing?" Alex couldn't believe what he was hearing. Who would break into their house? He felt sick thinking about Kiersten and his unborn cubs being vulnerable.

"I'll be there in a few minutes. Don't let the police leave until I get there." Alex started running across campus toward the parking lot. Lisa and Jayce saw him and ran to catch up.

"What's wrong?" Lisa asked, seeing the panic on her brother's face.

"Someone broke into the house while Kiersten was there alone. The police are there now, and they're chasing a man. Whoever he is, better hope the police catch him first because if I get my hands on him, he's dead." Alex continued running to his SUV. Lisa and Jayce jumped into the back.

"Don't you have class?" Alex asked even as he started pulling out of the parking lot.

"Class can wait. We have to check on Kiersten and my niece and nephew." Lisa replied. Jayce agreed with her. He couldn't wait for the cubs to come or for Lisa to be pregnant with their first cub. He always wanted a big family, and now he was part of the largest one he'd ever seen.

Alex was glad Lisa and Jayce were coming with him. He needed someone with a clear head; otherwise, Remy may take over and start tearing the place apart until he found the man who dared break into their home and frighten their mate. The house was only a few minutes from campus, and when they pulled up, they saw two police cars parked out front. All three of them jumped out and ran inside.

"Kiersten?" Alex said as soon as he was in the house. She jumped up from the couch just as he got to her and wrapped his arms around her tight. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I was just scared." She answered. His large arms around her and breathing in his scent immediately calmed her.

"Have you found anything?" Lisa asked the officer.

"Two officers chased a man who was seen running down the street as we pulled up. They're still in pursuit. Can you tell me if it looks like anything is missing?" Officer Peterson asked Lisa and Jayce. They started looking around the room.

"I can tell you it wasn't a mess like this when we left," Lisa replied. There were boxes ripped open and things thrown onto the floor. She noticed one box in particular seemed to have everything thrown out of it. It was a box where they had put some things they used to help them write the laws to protect shifters, vampires, and witches. Everything was there on the floor except for one thing. The large book that Atzi had let them borrow. Why would someone want the book from the Native American witch? Lisa didn't think she should tell the police about the book. It may be better to investigate on their own.
