BK 5 - Chapter 18 - Goodbye
**San Diego, California**
Atzi knew that Jackie had arrived as soon as the smoke filled the house. She'd hoped they would have more time with their grandsons and the new cubs, but that wasn't the case. She grabbed Xipil and her book before saying a quick spell. She knew exactly where the witch would take the cubs. It was all meant to be a trap. However, Jackie was setting her own trap; she just didn't know it yet.
When they arrived at a clearing in a forest just outside the city. Atzi thought it was perfect because there would be no witnesses. She could see Jackie standing next to the cubs who were lying on the ground. She wanted to pick them up, but that would give the witch more leverage.
"I knew you were a sucker and would fall for my trap. Are you prepared to die?" Jackie asked Atzi. She was almost drooling as she looked at the book.
"What makes you think I'm going to die? I have the book and my magic. What do you have?" Atzi asked her. She and Xipil stopped a couple of yards away.
"I have the precious cubs that I know you want to protect. Hand over the book, and I'll let them live. If you don't, I'll kill them, and then I'll kill both of you. Either way, I get the book and your magic." Jackie could almost taste the power that was within her reach.
"It's not going to go as you planned. You have nothing. Satan turned his back on you, so you're nothing but a lonely old witch who is too caught up in someone else's magic to better your own." Atzi sat the book on the ground, not far from the cubs. She and Xipil held hands as they stood behind it.
"I love you, my babies. It's time for you to return to your mom and dad now." Jackie looked at Atzi in disbelief. What was happening? Whatever it was, she knew she needed to stop it. Before she could move, Atzi began chanting, and Jackie felt a burning inside her that made her scream.
"What are you doing?" She yelled as she fell to her knees in pain.
"The only thing I can do to protect my grandsons, the cubs, and the entire werelion family." Atzi and Xipil had tears running down their faces as they felt the burning. They weren't crying from the pain. They were crying because they were leaving their family.
"If you do this, you'll die too. What's the point of that?" Jackie asked weakly.
"The point is that you'll be dead, and Satan will make sure the family is protected from evil." Atzi hoped he kept his word. He promised if she ended Jackie, then he would protect the family. Unfortunately, the only way to kill Jackie was also to kill herself, and Xipil wouldn't let her die alone. They looked at the cubs, and as they took their last breaths, Atzi said one last spell to transfer her magic and the knowledge from the book to the two cubs. Together, she knew they would do great things.
_______________
Alex called Lisa, and she called everyone else to return home so they could look for the cubs. No one knew where to begin searching. There were no clues left from whoever took them.
"I don't understand. Why does this sound like Atzi and Xipil won't be returning?" Lisa asked Alex quietly. He read over the note again and agreed.
"I don't know, but we need to find the cubs, Atzi and Xipil," Before Alex finished speaking, there was suddenly a large flash of light and a cool breeze blowing through the house. The next thing they heard was the whimpering of the cubs. Everyone ran over to the bassinets and saw Emma and Roger lying there as though they had never left.
"How did they come back?" Kiersten asked as she ran her hands over them, making sure they were really there.
"I don't know. There was a flash of light, and then they were here." Alex replied as he kissed their foreheads. He handed Emma to Kiersten while he held Roger.
"Where's our grandma and grandpa?" Johnny asked. Lisa went over and hugged the two boys.
"We don't know, but we're going to find them." She said. That's when she noticed Atzi's book was lying under the bassinets. She picked it up and ran her hand over it. How did it get there? When she opened the cover, there was an envelope with one word on the front. Family.
"It looks like there's a letter," Lisa said, holding up the envelope and setting the book down.
"What does it say?" Alex asked as he and Kiersten sat with the cubs on the couch. Everyone gathered around as Lisa opened the envelope.
*Dear family,*
*If you're reading this, then Xipil and I have died, and we were successful in stopping Jackie. I'm sorry we couldn't warn you about what would happen, but it had to be this way to keep you safe. We appreciate all of you for letting us be part of your family and allowing us to be there when the cubs were born. Please tell Johnny and Cole we're sorry. We trust you to raise them in your family and to make sure they're taken care of. We love them so much, and even though we can't be there with them to watch them grow and succeed in life, our spirits will always be with them. When I died, I placed a spell, transferring my magic and the knowledge of the book to the two cubs. They are the perfect pair to have so much power as they will grow to do great things. When the time comes that someone figures out the power they hold, trust Emma and Roger. They'll know what to do in order to stop the one that's coming for them. Please don't fear Satan if he makes an appearance to look over the cubs. He is the reason I was able to defeat Jackie and transfer everything to Emma and Roger. He has done some questionable things but feels strongly about protecting the innocent. He will assist with keeping your family safe from most evil. There are a few things that can slip through his grasp, but Emma and Roger will know what to do. I have to go now but remember what I tell you. Trust the cubs. We love you all. Please live well, werelion family. We were lucky to call you family, even for a short time.*
*Love,*
*Atzi and Xipil*
Everyone in the room was crying by the time Lisa got to the end. Breanne and Patrick hugged Johnny and Cole as they all sobbed. None of them could believe Atzi and Xipil sacrificed themselves to save their family.
Lisa reread the letter, and her heart broke. She silently promised Atzi and Xipil that Johnny and Cole would have the best lives possible. She walked over to the two boys and wrapped her arms around them.
"I promise you will always be a part of our family. Your grandparents were amazing people who loved everyone so much that they died to keep us all safe. We will make sure you are always taken care of because we love them and you." They hugged her back as they continued crying.
Alex looked at Emma and Roger in disbelief. He was proud and scared at the same time. Proud that Atzi trusted her power to the cubs but terrified of what trouble would be coming for them later. When they felt a warm breeze flow through the house, wrapping around them before fading away, they knew it was Atzi and Xipil giving them their final goodbye.
