Mirabelle's POV

Mirabelle's POV

Her own pack?

I don't know if it's something she's considering truly or simply thinking in the heat of the moment. Either way, I don't know what to say, running a pack is a lot to handle, it's too much responsibility. I don't doubt Camilla wouldn't know what to do, she has more than enough dispositions that allow her to take on the job. She saved hundreds of lives and ended nearly as much, single handedly. These people owe her their lives, and most of them, like Emily, think she should have run Takishini after killing its Alpha.

“So,” Camilla began, clearing her throat for effective measure. “I need to pay the Council a visit, where is their bureau? It's someone close to here right? I can't remember where exactly.”

I shrug, the words unable to slip past my lips.

Camilla let's go of both mine and Emily's hands, both of us relaxing when she does. She catches the action and frowns, focussing ahead of us. “I'll ask him,” she murmurs, referring to Beta.

She begins to walk, the steps she takes urging and futile at last. Her manner is so different but I like this change, she's no longer a pushover and that's all I ever wanted. However, I didn't want her to ruthlessly slaughter half a pack, that was her first kill and she didn't even shake afterwards she killed eight more and went on to kill more after that.

There's something about Camilla. I can't tell if it's the way her hair changed color or the fact that she's practically soulless everytime I look at her but it scares me. I am scared of Tiana because of the emptiness of her gaze but today, I've seen it in Camilla too and its effect on me seemed to have doubled. When the man she freed among hundreds spoke to us about Beta, I was trying so hard not to break down into tears and Iexpected to see Camilla drenched in her own tears when I turned to her but no, nothing. She couldn't care less about the story, she simply conducted herself with no emotion.

Beta is talking to a pregnant woman when Camilla approaches him. “Excuse me, Beta.” she lets out, her hand light tapping his shoulder. His reaction to her is instant, he whirls around, his gaze instantly entangling with hers.

“Yea?”

“Beta, you know where the council headquarters is right?” Camilla asks, her gaze momentarily shifting to the shaking pregnant woman. Poor woman, one look from Camilla and she looks like she's going to go into early labor.

Beta clears his throat, his hands resting in his pockets. “Yeah, I do know where it is and the name is Kingston by the way.” He says, offering her a smile but Camilla's face stays blank. It's only now that I realize how hot Beta is, the man is over two inches taller than me and possibly three over Camilla.

“Cool, can you take us there and in return, I'll get your daughter back wherever she is. Mr Huntington told us about that in case you're wondering.”

I gasp, she's really going for it and jumping straight at a sensitive subject for Beta. He doesn't seem offended by the way she approached the subject of his daughter, if anything he grins wider. His gaze fixed on her and her only, “I can take you for free, but I don't need you or anyone to get my daughter back. My daughter is better off with a mother figure that's why I let her take her, there's only one thing she can do for her.”

“A child will always be better with its initial parent, so cut the bullshit. Or what, you're not confident you can raise a kid?”

“Camilla.” I gasp, Emily giggles besides me. Once again, Beta is unbothered by her choice of words, he laughs it off. “Alright, I'll take you to the council luna.”

I can see Camilla flinch at him addressing her as luna. “I'm not a luna.” she tells him, her hands curling into fists on her sides. Beta sees the effect it has on her and he chuckles, getting a reaction from Camilla that appears to make him happy.

“Really?” he urges, running his tongue over his lips. My gaze drops to Camilla's fists, the veins in her hand flexing. I cough, signalling Beta to cut it off when his gaze meets mine.

I don't think this is the topic to be touching right now, all wounds are still fresh. Camilla and her newfound temper don't seem to appreciate the joke, she wants things her way or the highway. I still can't believe being called a luna now brings about a violent reaction in her. She used to blush red when someone called her Luna, especially if they added "Adrian's" to it, but now I fear for whoever addresses her as his Luna will end up in a pool of their own blood at her feet.

“Are you taking us there now, or maybe you're waiting for another pack to abduct us?” she snarls, her empty gaze settled on Beta.

“You are very impatient aren't you?” he counters, earning himself a smile from her that she automatically masks with an unreadable utterance.Beta nods, “Alright, follow me. It's actually no more than forty-five minutes away. So if you want to get there fast you'll have to shape shift.”

Wait, Camilla can't not shape shift she doesn't have a wolf despite exhibiting some of the features of having one sometimes. “You can ride on Valerie,” I offer.

However, she doesn't respond to me but does nod to Beta Kingston. He instantly shifts to his wolf form, it startles a bit. A large brown wolf almost golden with two different eyes, one blue and the other violet. His wolf is equal to that of an Alpha, he howls at Camilla who winces. “Lead the way.” she whispers, loud enough for him to understand her.

Beta Kingston's wolf form begins to run, heading in the opposite direction of where Camilla estimated the Council bureau would be at. “Oh well,” Camilla shrugs, wrapping her hair in a messy bun on top of her head, and then, she runs. Without shifting, she runs after Beta, the speed of her feet startling to all witnessing the action.

“Wow,” Emily let out from beside me, I nod in response, watching Camilla catch up with Beta Kingston's wolf form. I know that she's a fast runner, I've taken her on a morning run twice during the time I was training to be Zeta and both times, I would always find her waiting for me, for a glass of water in hand. She'd told me she was a fast runner and looking at her now, I think her definition of fast differs from that of everyone.

“Where are they going?” the pregnant woman asked.

My hands reach for my hair, trying it into a messy bun like Camilla did as I stare into the distant view, Beta and Cami and no longer in sight. “To run an errand,” I tell the pregnant lady.

Emily is the first to shift, and then I shift too, chasing after her in the direction that Beta Kingston and Camilla went. A few other people shift and run behind us. I wonder what Camilla will do. She'll obviously ask the council for a house and it better be a big one because everyone is coming.

It appears that she has won everyone's trust, everyone is counting on her. They're already loyal to her without question, she says jump, they'll ask how high. The run to the council is a fucking sprint race between Camilla and Beta Kingston, they don't know each other but have this desire to taunt each other, in a childlike manner. It takes nearly twenty minutes to get to the bureau, Camilla and Beta being the first ones to reach, with Beta in his human form. Camilla's face is dripping with sweat mixed with crimson.

When Camilla discerns the number of people that followed her, she gasps, “What are all of you doing here?” she asks, her question directed to me mostly.

“Isn't it obvious smarty, you saved their lives so they worship you now.” Beta tells her, in response she scowls with confusion. “Well, won't you go in? I brought you here as agreed.”

Camilla stretches her hand out, “Belle.” she murmurs.

I take her hand, my other hand stringing Emily. She's growing on me if I'm being honest, she's quite the chatter box, even before she introduced herself, she spoke to me. She's the girl Alpha Hayden had taken out after bringing the one his wife seemed attached to, Emily wasn't drugged as much because she was obedient.

However, in her words, she just didn't give a shit about them, she wasn't going to fight something that was an apparent loss.

“We're here to see the council,” Beta Kingston lets out, tapping at the reception desk.

The receptionist is a woman in her early twenties, chewing gum in frustration. “Well, take a number and wait as you can see... everyone wants to see the council.” She says, her hand gesturing to the people sitting in the waiting room.

Camilla's gaze doesn't even drift there, “Sweetie, ain't nobody got time for that shit.” she utters, pushing past the little barrier that goes past the waiting room. Beta Kingston curses under his breath, following her hastily.

The receptionist attempts to ring security but Emily stops her, slamming her hand on the telephone. “Don't even think about it.” she growls, causing enough distraction. The warning in her tone is effective, the receptionist nods, reaching under her desk but Emily stops her once again. I take advantage of the opening and head straight to where Cami and Beta are. Beta is scolding Camilla when I find them, she ignores him, pushing the door of the central council board room open without bothering to knock.

Someone is illustrating a demonstration when we walk in, all members of the central council seem present.

“Excuse me,” Lacey, a thirty-two year old member of the council snapped, discerning us. I know Lacey, before Camilla, she would be seen leaving our pack in the early hours of the morning. Adrian has a liking to older women and she always fell prey to his pastime.
