Adrian's POV continues
“You might as well as put that blade in her hand with your actions now because of you, I might have to tell Alpha Ryan his sister committed suicide because you're not man enough to do fix your goddamn issues or mannup.” He hisses.
“I'm sorry, I slipped up but my intention was never to hurt her and you know it. Hurting Camilla is the last thing I want to do, I've tried for her, I've tried to love her, to-”
Santiago's laughter causes me to pause, “Tried to love her?” He snorts, his hand swiping his nose. “Just how fucking hard is to love her, she's your mate for goodness sake! You were made to love her just as she was to love you and your fucked up ways. She is the one person in this world that loves you nearly as much as Mother if not more, Camilla is the calm to your chaos, she is peace in its truest and purest form, even if she weren't your mate, how could you not love her! ”
I shake my head, pacing around. Walking around like a crazed man. “I don't know.” I admit.
“You're not attracted to her?”
I snicker bitterly, “Not attracted to her? The only reason I fucked other girls was because I wanted her, her voice itself makes me hard and every non oblivious creature walking this earth can sense the sexual tension between us from miles away... But attraction and love are two different things, I can't love her, or anyone.”
“And Angel?” He counters.
I shake my head, “You know why.”
Santiago nods, “I do, yet, Cami deserves better Adrian and I want you to make a choice. You can't keep her here and keep hurting her. That's selfish of you. She deserves to be happy. I expect you to make a choice here and now, for her sake. You have two options, option 1, try things the right way with that sweet girl or option two, send her back to Alpha Ryan and the veterans. I don't want her with us if she's not happy.”
I stare at him in awe and he sneers, “So which one is it Alpha? Come on, don't be a coward or unfair to my Luna. She's in there fighting for her life because of you and that whore you're so attached to.”
“You can't tell me what to do Santiago.”
“Hmm,” He nods. “However, since you seem to be struggling with the decision, I'll make one for you. While you're tip-toeing to make your choice, Cami will go back to Alpha Ryan Burton because it's clear you've failed her.”
I scowl at him, “You....”
“I'm your Beta, when you are incompetent, I step in and perform my duties. One of my duties and that of every male under your rule just so happens to be protecting our Luna. You haven't claimed her or marked her as yours but she's our rightful Luna, no one can take her place. That said, I'm doing what's best for everyone, her more than you but you can get her back when you're ready to fully accept her as what she is and who she is. Right now, she needs to be surrounded by people that love her, all of them. Belle, Rae, Martin and I immensely love her but she needs her family right now and Michelle, your emotionally distant minion, doesn't count as family right now.”
I open my mouth to say something but quickly shut it, my gaze darting to Michelle and the girls, Santiago follows my eyes and we both go to her. “How is she?”
Michelle's stare switches to me and she sucks in breath, “We managed to stabilise her, she is miraculously conceding to treatment.” She says calmly. Michelle is very calm and collected for someone who just watched her sister fight for her life.
“Is she going to be okay?” I ask, my tone low and pregnant with defeat.
Michelle shrugs, placing a hand on her belly. “I think so, it won't be the first time she's survived a suicide attempt.” I switch my gaze to Santiago before turning to her. He was tasked with finding me everything about Camilla and nothing about suicide attempts was listed in the information he found.
“What do you mean it won't be the first time?”
“Umm, Camilla has a history with mental health issues. When she started kindergarten, we noticed the change in her behavior, we speculated she was adapting to the new environment but as she got older, it seemed to be more of a personality disorder. In my opinion, she was mirroring Talitha.”
“Talitha?” I ask, “Who is that? I've heard her mention the name many times in her sleep.”
“A friend of Milla's, they made each other so happy. Talitha had a twin but it seemed Talitha and Camilla were the twins. They did everything together, they matched clothes and even spoke in unison, it was cute. They were becoming codependent so our custodians saw it best to put some threshold on how much time they spent together, so they'd develop their own personality. It worked, Camilla was back her usual sweet self but Talitha was the opposite yet they mirrored each other perfectly if need arises.
Ying and yang.
Talitha could effortlessly turn Camilla into her, a child perfect in her parent's eyes but problematic to the world. I saw the way they acted when they were together, Camilla was sweet at home but the second she was outside, she was a bully, her words aimed to kill and the games she played with her peers always ended in one of them getting hurt.
One time, she made a child jump from high up a fence to the ground, while under my care, I blamed it on the sweets I fed her. I reprimanded her and waved it off.
Our sister Selena, once caught her cutting herself and she had a logical explanation, she said she was pulling out a thorn that was skin deep because she didn't want Mom to know, she was doing it herself.” Michelle snorts, “Selena hasn't mentioned it, until one day, when I was babysitting, I found her lying half dead. That was the day I decided I wanted to be a doctor. She did see a child specialist but there were a few more attempts after that. She'd swallow pills, try to drown herself, and whatever else that demented child she mirrored did.”
“Oh.” Santiago silently gasps.
Michelle nods, “Yea, sadly at twelve, Talitha committed suicide while they were playing at her house, Camilla and her Tiana, her twin sister were the ones that found her. After her death, Camilla was back to the sweet child everyone knew and loved, she was kind, empathetic, and considerate, so was Tiana.”
None of this seems like Camilla, I take a deep breath and look over to Mirabelle, she looks unphased by the bomb Michelle dropped on us, implying she knew of this, of course she did. Camilla and Mirabelle are close.
A nurse comes running, pausing beside Michelle, “Doctor Burton, The patient is rejecting the blood. The pathways we initiate keep closing, the doctors are freaking out right now.”
Michelle shakes her head, “You can't be serious, we requested O negative blood and that's her blood type.”
“I know but doctor, it's very strange, she needs blood and her body isn't taking it. We might lose the patient.” The nurse whispers just loud enough for us to hear.
My eyes dart from the nurse to Michelle, ignoring the "fuck me" stare she's giving me.
“Tell doctor Lee to find an alternative, I'm coming.” Michelle tells her and she leaves, not before staring at me.
I glare at Michelle, “Give your blood.” It's an order not a request.
Santiago nudges me, “Michelle can't donate her blood, she's pregnant Adrian.”
Fuck, it slipped my mind.
“Even if I wasn't,” Michelle begins, her gaze resting on me. “Milla can't take my blood, her mother's genes are more dominant than her father's. Less than five percent of her mimics our people's traits.”
The nurse comes into view once again, this time with a smirk, “Doctor, she's doing better now. There's no need for blood transfusion.”
Michelle frowns, glaring at the nurse. “She's producing the blood for herself isn't she?” The nurse nods then shakes her head, bewildered about the entire situation. More so than I am. “Little Milla surprises me every time. Excuse me.” She bows her head in acknowledgement before turning to leave. Mirabelle shoots up from her seat, tagging at her arm. “Can I see her please? Even if it's just for a second.” Michelle nods at her and they disappear into the crowd of doctors and patients as well as visitors.
“Hmm, it's as if Moon is her mate, I mean look at her. She’s always there for her, she loves her, stands up for her, doesn’t let anyone bully her. Moon vibes off her energy, she understands Cami's pain. It's hard to believe moon is your sister, she’s so heartfelt and you’re heartless.” He tsks.
I gulp, Santiago's words hit me hard. A thousand arrows shot at me would have been better than this, it hurts me to hear him say that about me. When people call me heartless, I thrive off it, I feast on the fear and terror it ignities within them to consider me heartless. I take it as a sincere compliment when I'm called heartless because they don't know shit about me, but Santiago, he is my best friend. He knows me better than that.
It was all Milla's fault. She's the end of me.
