Chapter 205
The moon hung high in the night sky as the chilling howls echoed through the dense forest. The discovery of a mutilated pack member sent shockwaves through the border patrol, and fear gripped the pack. I stood at the gruesome scene, a mixture of horror and disbelief washing over me. Just when I thought my life was getting a little easier,it was too good to be true. I should have known better. Drama always followed me around like a plague.
Roman's sharp gaze locked onto me, his expression a blend of anger and suspicion. "This is not the work of banshees," he growled, his voice cutting through the tension. The pack members whispered among themselves, their eyes darting to the strand of my hair found near the lifeless body. The old me would have scoffed and rolled her eyes but seriously I was scared. I was scared and I was angry that it was so easy for everyone to just think ofcourse it was me who did this horrible thing.
"I swear, Roman, I didn't do this!" I protested, urgency in my voice. "Someone is trying to frame me." My heart pounded hard at the realisation that someone was actually trying to frame me and I had no idea who it was. Everyone had a reason not to like me here I guess it was a question of who hated me more?Damn, it could be anyone or everyone.
His jaw tightened as he examined the evidence. "Your hair, Iris. It's hard to believe this is a coincidence."
Roman was trying to be hard on me but I could see the fear in his eyes . It was as if he was begging for it not to be me but at the same time he couldn't trust me and it was all my fault. Maybe I had to open up to them all just a little bit. I didn't have to give them details but I had to give them a reason to trust me even if it was just a little bit.
Ella, who had been a source of support, eyed me with doubt. "Why should we trust you? You've been nothing but secretive since you got here."
It hurt me that Ella had said that but she was right. I clenched my fists, desperation creeping in. "I'm not the enemy here. Someone wants you to think I am."
The air thickened with mistrust, and I could feel the pack's eyes boring into me. "Iris, if you're hiding something, now would be the time to spill it," Roman demanded, his patience wearing thin.
A heavy sigh escaped me. "I come from another pack, one led by Alpha Alexander. There were complications, and I left." I hesitated, knowing this revelation could either clear my name or condemn me further.
"What kind of complications?" Roman's voice held a mix of curiosity and suspicion.
I glanced around at the tense faces. "Alexander was my Alpha. I loved him, but he chose a human as his mate over me. Things went downhill from there, and that is why I ran." I said adding a little lie in there. I didn't want people to know I was kicked out,the embarrassment of it all would be too much . My pride wouldn't allow me to say it.
The confession hung in the air, and I could feel the weight of judgment. Roman's eyes bore into mine, searching for sincerity. "So, you've got a vendetta against us?" he asked, a hint of disbelief in his voice.
I wanted to punch Roman in the face ,it's like he was hearing his own thing or just pretending to be dumb."No, Roman. I just want to leave my past behind. I have no reason to harm your pack," I pleaded, hoping he would see the truth in my eyes.
The discovery of the mutilated pack member had shattered the fragile trust I had been building. My secrets, once my shield, now became a weapon against me. As the pack wrestled with the revelation, I stood there, exposed and vulnerable, my fate hanging in the balance.
Roman and I retreated from the disturbing scene. The night held its secrets, and the mystery of who had mutilated the border patrol member lingered in the air. Roman's stern gaze stayed fixed on me, the questions that burned in his eyes left unspoken.
"We need answers, Iris," he finally said, his voice low and authoritative. "I don't want my pack in danger."
I nodded, understanding the urgency. "I agree, Roman. But someone is framing me. We need to find out who and why."
Roman and I had our differences but he was still my mate at the end of the day . I actually wanted to prove my innocence. Whoever did this would pay for it ...badly.
As we ventured deeper into the packhouse, whispers and glances followed us. The atmosphere was charged with suspicion. In the dimly lit meeting room, Roman addressed the pack members, his voice a steady command cutting through the hushed conversations.
"We have a threat among us. The death of our pack member was a message, and we need to decipher it. Iris is innocent until proven guilty. Our priority is finding who did this and why."
He cast a lingering look in my direction, silently emphasizing my innocence. The muscled girl, Ella, eyed me with a mix of skepticism and resentment. Why was Ella looking at me that way.I was a bit confused and I needed to talk to her after this. The tension in the room crackled as Roman continued to address the pack, outlining the plan to investigate the murder.
As discussions unfolded, my mind raced, contemplating the possibilities. Could it be someone from my mysterious past, catching up with me and using the opportunity to wreak havoc? That didn't make sense because how would they know I am here, it had to be someone from the inside.
Roman caught my eye and motioned for me to join him in a quieter corner of the room. "We'll get to the bottom of this, Iris. But there are still questions about your past that need answers."
"I promise, Roman, we'll talk about it. But right now, we need to focus on finding the real culprit," I replied, determined to unravel the twisted plot against me.
The night wore on with investigations and speculations. The pack remained on edge, the mystery heightening the unease. As the hours passed, Roman and I delved into the details, examining every angle of the crime.
The search for answers led us through the tangled web of pack politics, personal vendettas, and my own enigmatic past. The air buzzed with anticipation, and the ominous feeling of danger lingered. The pack, once united, now stood divided by suspicion and fear.
The real challenge had just begun, and the mystery deepened, leaving everyone on edge, wondering who could be capable of such a gruesome act and why my hair was at the crime scene. The answers remained elusive, hidden in the shadows of the night. One thing was for sure ,nobody trusted me and if we did not find this idiot soon I was going to be in real trouble.
