Chapter 20
For some unknown reason It was a restless night, an undercurrent of tension woven into the very fabric of the air. The events of the previous days lingered like a shadow, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something ominous loomed on the horizon.
I could feel that there was trouble brewing and it made me anxious. The girls had left me to go do other things ,Ella didn't want to leave me but she had other obligations and to be honest I had enough babysitters already.
My thoughts swirled as I navigated the darkened corridors of the packhouse. I managed to dodge the warriors for a bit,it was easy. All I had to do was make up a toilet excuse. The soft hum of the night was disturbed by muffled whispers, indicating a clandestine gathering ahead. Instinctively, I followed the hushed tones, my senses on high alert.
Something just told me that I had to know what was going on in there. It didn't feel like anything good. I just couldn't have one full good week without something coming up to bite me in the ass. The worst part was that Roman was always busy especially with these mysterious threats in his pack. We didn't know if it was a threat on me or the pack but a lot was going on. I didn't even know were we stand -me and Roman. We didn't have time to just talk or even sit alone without me running away or something coming up.
As I approached an inconspicuous door, the voices grew clearer. "We can't let her stay. She is bad news and she's a threat," someone whispered fervently.
I heard people hum in agreement and it was obvious they were talking about me ofcourse. Oh goodness when would this end. Why couldn't they just let this go and let me in.
Curiosity mingled with apprehension as I pressed my ear against the door, catching fragments of the conversation within. "Roman's too blinded by her to see the danger. We have to take matters into our own hands."
"Ever since she came here there has been chaos. I swear to you all this girl is behind everything that is going all wrong in this pack currently!" another pack member said with confidence. He was so sure I was the evil one here.
My heart quickened. It was evident that a faction within the pack harbored resentment, viewing me as a menace rather than an ally. The realization hit hard, fueling the flames of uncertainty that danced within me.
The door creaked open, revealing a small group of pack members huddled together. Their eyes widened as they noticed me, their conspiratorial discussion abruptly halted.
"Shouldn't you be under guard?" one of them sneered, attempting to mask their surprise.
"I don't need babysitters," I retorted, refusing to let their disdain unsettle me. "What's going on here?"
The tension in the room escalated, but a voice, bolder than the rest, spoke up. "You're a danger to the pack. We won't let Roman's infatuation blind him to the risks."
My eyes narrowed, a mix of defiance and irritation coursing through me. "I know when things go wrong people tend to look for a reason or someone to blame. It's probably also easier to blame the new girl but honestly I am your Alpha's mate so If you have concerns, bring them to Roman, not behind closed doors."
I had to remind them that at the end of the day I was Roman's mate and they had to respect that or perish.
Their collective gaze held a mixture of distrust and resentment. "You think Roman would listen? He's too enamored with you. We can't afford to wait for him to see reason."
The words hung in the air, a stark declaration of their intent. My wolf stirred within, sensing the threat that loomed. "What do you plan to do?"
Silence lingered, pregnant with unspoken intentions, until one of them stepped forward. "We'll handle it ourselves, for the pack's safety."
Adrenaline surged through my veins. This clandestine faction posed a genuine threat, and I couldn't let their misguided actions jeopardize the fragile stability of the pack. "You're making a grave mistake."
Before I could react, the group lunged at me. It was a chaotic whirlwind of snarls and clashes, each movement fueled by a misguided sense of duty. Despite their numbers, I fought back, determined to protect myself and the pack I'd reluctantly come to call home.
Amidst the chaos, a familiar voice cut through the commotion. "What the hell is going on here?"
Roman's presence shifted the dynamic in an instant. The attackers hesitated, their conviction waning in the face of the Alpha's fury.
I met Roman's gaze, urgency flashing between us. "They think I'm a threat to the pack. I can handle myself, but we need to stop this before it escalates." I surprised Roman by holding his hand softly "I am okay, just let them be. They will accept me eventually" I could feel his heart beat faster ,maybe it was excitement or joy that I was giving this a chance but it made my heart feel warm and weird.
His jaw clenched, a potent blend of anger and disappointment etched on his face. "Stand down," he commanded the assailants.
Reluctantly, they obeyed, glowering at me with resentment. Roman's gaze never left mine as he addressed the group. "We resolve conflicts through discussion, not violence. If you have concerns, voice them openly, but this behavior is unacceptable."
The tension in the room lingered, a palpable reminder of the fragility that cloaked our existence. As the dissidents dispersed, Roman turned to me, his expression a mix of frustration and concern.
"You will be punished. I will deal with each one of you later, personally." He promised them as the warriors took them away.He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I won't let anything happen to you."
I hated that finally I was willing to change,to be good and to just give fate a chance but even that seemed to be impossible too. What did the goddess want from me honestly this was exhausting.
