Chapter 206

I left Roman with his close council members as they discussed the matter further. I really wanted to talk to Ella; we had become close, and I didn't want her to be one of the people that hated me as well. So I made my way to go talk to her.

"Iris!" I heard Rya call out in the corridor; she ran towards me, and I waited.

"Rya, are you alright?" I asked her; she looked a bit bothered. "If it's that boy again..." I started, but she cut me off.

"No, not even he wouldn't dare. I just wanted to talk to you about something," she said as she breathed out.

I nodded my head. "Okay, I'm listening."

"Iris, some people are really upset with you, and they really want to hurt you. Please just be extra careful. I was going to talk to Roman. Maybe you should have some extra protection," she said nervously. She wasn't sure how I was going to take this news.

I laughed for a second; Rya was cute, and I actually was starting to like the young girl. "Thank you, Rya, but I will be alright, especially now that you have warned me. I'm a werewolf; I don't need bodyguards." I smiled at her, trying to lighten the situation, but the girl wasn't at ease. It's as if she knew more than she was telling me.

"Just be careful, okay... promise me," she said, looking at me.

I smiled at her. "I promise I will be on high alert."

She hugged me before walking away. I was a bit worried about how bothered she was. I knew people in this pack weren't fond of me, and some even hated my guts, but that never really made me uneasy until now.

Obviously, the realization that some pack members harbored not just dislike but outright hostility towards me wasn't news, yet the threat of harm hung heavily in the atmosphere.

Despite the whispers and glares that followed me, Rya's concern provided a flicker of warmth in the cold reality of my existence within the pack. The idea that someone cared enough to caution me against potential danger was a sentiment I hadn't expected.

With each step, I felt the weight of the pack's collective disdain pressing on me. Rounding a corner, my senses heightened, alert to the mounting negativity in the air.

However, before I could reach Ella, the hallway plunged into darkness, and the sudden silence was shattered by the shuffle of footsteps approaching me. Two masked men and a woman emerged from the shadows, their intentions clear.

I clenched my fists, my senses heightened as I prepared for a confrontation. The air crackled with animosity, and their masked faces gave nothing away. The element of surprise was on their side, and I knew I had to act fast.

Before I could react, they lunged at me, the assault swift and relentless. Fending off their blows, I fought back with every ounce of strength I possessed. The masked assailants were skilled, and the darkness favored their anonymity.

Just when it seemed the odds were stacked against me, a familiar voice cut through the chaos. The beta, a formidable force, appeared on the scene. The attackers hesitated, sensing the shift in power. In an instant, they vanished into the shadows, leaving me battered but alive.

"Are you okay?" Beta Haden asked as he helped me up. I didn't think he would care, but he looked genuinely concerned.

I nodded as I got up. "I'm okay; thank you for helping me."

"Did you see their faces?" he asked.

I was so annoyed that I didn't get to see their faces. I was too busy trying not to get beaten to death. Was it a coincidence that after Rya's warning, I got attacked immediately, or did Rya actually know about this? That means she could know who these people were. Maybe she was trying to protect them but also trying to protect me.

"No, I didn't see their faces; everything just happened so fast," I said with a sigh.

My bruises healed quickly; the attack wasn't scary. It felt more like they were just trying to frighten me... maybe into leaving or something. I had experienced worse things than small attacks, so I wasn't shaking in my boots; I was more annoyed than anything else.

"We should let the Alpha know about this," Haden said, leading the way.

I followed him, but I was so tempted to continue with my mission. I really needed to talk to Ella.

The revelation of the attack on me sent shockwaves through the pack, and Beta Haden didn't waste a moment before informing Roman. Roman immediately ordered his warriors to guard me, but I simply refused. I did not need twenty men guarding me; that was insane. As I paced nervously in my room, the door swung open, and Roman stormed in, his eyes ablaze with anger.

"What the hell, Iris?" Roman's voice was thunderous, the edge of his frustration cutting through the air. "Why do you have to be so stubborn?"

"I don't need bodyguards, Roman. I'm not some fragile princess," I retorted, my frustration matching his. The idea of being constantly shadowed by warriors felt suffocating.

"They attacked you once; they might try again. I won't take any risks with your safety," Roman argued, his jaw clenched.

"I'm a werewolf, Roman. I can take care of myself," I countered, resisting the idea of becoming a prisoner within my own pack.

He grabbed my shoulders, his eyes piercing into mine. "I won't allow it."

The intensity in his gaze made my heart flutter, but I couldn't let emotions cloud my judgment. "I won't be confined like this. It's not who I am."

After a tense back-and-forth, Roman's determination won out. "Two warriors will accompany you. They stay close, and you won't even notice them."

Rolling my eyes, I reluctantly agreed. The prospect of arguing further seemed futile, and I couldn't deny the concern etched across Roman's face.

As the warriors joined me, I couldn't help but feel like a prisoner despite Roman's reassurances.
