Chapter 105
"You would think as dad's favourite, Alexander will have the friends, the love, the attention. Nah, he didn't. All was given to Alessandro, even though he didn't want it. We were all Mafia kids in school and he was loved. At one point I think it made Xander very furious and jealous. But then, he had daddy's attention and he decided to let go. The only person who didn't love Alessandro was Vincenzo." Romano continued.
"Alessandro is his son, if he didn't like him, the least he could do was to not make the boy aware of the hate." Jacqueline muttered, rubbing her eyes. She was exhausted, the day's drama just kept playing on and on, when she thought it's near the end, a plot twist popped up, it's crazy.
"Not him. You know what Vincenzo did before he became the Don?"
Jacqueline shook her head in response.
"He was an annihilator for the Italian mafia, there was this period of time where the Russian mob sort him out. He killed and obliterated everything in his part, it just had to be commanded. He was known for his power and authority. You see why he can't handle someone weak in his family?"
Jacqueline nodded her head, rubbing her face. "It still doesn't justify what he did, okay, why not kill him yourself? Why hire hitmen." She asked.
"It doesn't justify what he did, according to you with morals. Men like Vincenzo don't have morals, they will drown you without having so much of a second thought, you just have to get in their way."
"This is fvcked up, so fvcked up." Jacqueline sighed.
"Him hiring hitmen, I don't know why that happened. But, if he had gone all out to murder Alessandro himself, you wouldn't be in this situation, your soulmate would have been dead before you got to meet him. There's no way you would have met Alexander, the guy was a jerk." Romano said.
"The mafia world is crazy." She sighed, getting on her feet.
"Are you having second thoughts?" Romano asked.
Jacqueline shook her head "no, what if I was?" She asked back.
Romano chuckled, before answering "it's too late, Cara Mia. You might think you know the man, Alessandro, but you don't." He replied.
Jacqueline stared at him, she wasn't surprised. She witnessed first hand how he got possessive.
"You look tired, won't you head back for a change of clothes and a nap?" Before he could finish his statement, Jacqueline was already shaking her head in response.
"I'm staying here, till he wakes up."
"Okay." Romano shrugged, he knew she wasn't going to comply, he just wanted to ask.
"I thought Penelope said Vincenzo was here?" He asked after some minutes.
"Yeah, he had another heart failure, that reminds me, I should go see how he is doing." Jacqueline said getting on her feet, only to be pulled back by Romano.
"I think Penelope is handling that." He said.
"What's with everyone and secret past and identity? The Penelope I left at home is different than this Penelope, who's she? "
Romano shrugged "her husband owned this place, she left it in the hands of someone. You're better off not knowing something, for the sake of your mental health."
Jacqueline stared at him like he had lost it. "I shouldn't know what goes on with the people I live with, sleep and wake up with? That's crazy."
"Well, you're not that clean, are you?" Romano said and she froze.
"W-what are you talking about?" She stuttered.
"No one has a clean past, no one is without a cockroach in their cupboard." He said, watching her reaction. He felt her freeze because of his statement earlier, he was right, Jacqueline is not as innocent as she pretends to be.
"I'm not hiding anything. " She stated immediately, avoiding his eyes.
"Yeah, let's believe that. The fact that it isn't out yet doesn't mean you're hiding it well, it's just time." Romano shrugged.
"Let's change this conversation." Jacqueline muttered, unable to hold his gaze and kept looking everywhere else.
"Um...incoming." Romano twitched his head, pointing at the entrance. Jacqueline had her back to the entrance, so only he could see who came in.
"Who's that?" She asked, turning to stare. Her eyes widened on seeing Greta and two other people with her.
"What are you doing here?" Jacqueline asked in anger, getting up from her seat.
"To see my-" Greta's word was cut short, an arm had reached out and was currently choking her.
Jacqueline slammed her back to the wall nearby. "To see who?" She asked again.
"My husband." Greta mustered out, her breathing was already slowing down.
"The same husband you've been conspiring against?" Jacqueline asked, increasing the pressure until she felt Greta's pulse slowing down.
"You're killing her, damn it." Someone said, about to reach for Jacqueline.
"The moment you lay your filthy hands on her, consider it gone. Toil with it first." Romano's daring voice.
Jacqueline had no idea who was aiming to touch her, her main focus was to kill Greta.
"You're just going to stand there and watch her choke my mother-in-law?" Another voice said, this time a lady's.
Jacqueline released Greta's neck from her grip, and turned to stare at the lady who had spoken.
"Your mother in law? Which of her son's are you getting married to?" She asked, stepping up to the lady. There was this feeling that she had met before.
"Why are you asking, and who the hell are you?" The girl asked and Jacqueline had to restrain herself from punching the girl six ways to hell.
"Brenda, what are you doing here?" Romano asked and Jacqueline smiled nodding her head.
"If you didn't get the memo, the engagement or arrangement with you and Alexander is off, scurry off Brenda." Jacqueline said.
"On who's command? For all I care, my fiance is sick and I'm here to watch him." Brenda's bitchy voice rang out.
"Last warning, baby girl"
