Chapter 68

Chapter 68- The mafia's possession

"I took her to the hospital last night. She was getting weak. I was scared, I thought something terrible would happen," Aries said.

Jacqueline panicked and started pacing the room. "How is she? What did the doctor say?" She swallowed hard as her heartbeat accelerated.

"He said she will be fine. All we need to do is pay for her treatment."

Jacqueline gripped the phone. "Uhm, I will send you some money later."

"Alright, so how are you doing?"

She sighed. She was not in the mood for chatting with anyone. "Just good. I will call you back.later. I need to work now."

"Alright, take care of yourself. I will be expecting your call."

"Yea," then she hung up. She was overwhelmed with emotion. If it wasn't for the fact that she was here, working for Chain, she would have left to go see her sister.

She sat on the bed looking sad and dejected. She wanted to see her sister, Jennie. But she couldn't. She sniffed back the tears threatening to flow but in a moment, tears flowed from her eyes.

Jacqueline sniffed and then wiped her face with the back of her hand. Then she slipped the phone in her pocket. She did a little breathing exercise before walking to the door.

She twisted the door handle and opened the door. When she got to the kitchen, she met granny Penelope holding a tray.

"There you are, Jacqueline. I was thinking that you wouldn't show up," she smiled brightly.

"Really, I am a domestic staff here, remember?"

"I haven't forgotten about that," I know you still work here." She handed the tray to Jacqueline. "Mr. Vladimir is waiting. Serve him immediately at the dining table."

Jacqueline collected the tray. Feeling rather awkward about the whole situation. "I will do just that."

Granny Penelope folded her arms across her chest. "Good, when you're done, I will like to have a word with you," she said.

Jacqueline's face creased with worry, still holding the tray in her hand. She could perceive the delicious aroma emanating from the plate. "Granny, is there a problem?"

"No, it's nothing serious," she replied. "Now hurry, he is waiting."

Quickly, she walked to the door and granny Penelope helped her with the door. Then she got out.

She took a turn leading to the dining room and after a few seconds of walking, she got to the dining room and dropped the tray on the table. As she turned to leave, she stumbled in shock, almost hitting her head on Alexander's chest.

"Ouch! That was close," she cried out, rubbing her temple.

Alexander's face was unreadable, he ignored her and sat on a chair in the dining room. He opened the dish and started eating, acting like she doesn't exist.

She tried to speak but her voice had failed her. She blinked repeatedly in surprise. He couldn't even spare her glance. As he ate in silence.

In shame, she left the dining room and went back to the kitchen but granny Penelope was not in there. Her eyes scanned the kitchen. There were used dishes in the sink and the worktop was a little bit greasy.

Rubbing her palms together, she walked to the sink and turned the faucet on. Then she started washing the dishes under running water. When she was done, she brought out a piece of rag and cleaned the worktop. She felt angry at the way he had ignored her.

Using all the force in her fueled by anger, she kept wiping the worktop, it was already gleaming but she still continued.

"Easy, one would think the worktop did something bad to you. It's Alexander you should be venting your anger on, not the worktop," granny Penelope said, standing by the doorway.

Jacqueline turned swiftly and her eyes fell on Penelope. "How did you know that?"

Granny Penelope smiled as she came to stand close to Jacqueline. "Lovers spat. You two seemed to be having a great time together and the next minute, you're on each other's neck."

Jacqueline sighed deeply and dropped the rag on the counter and used her handkerchief to mob the beads of sweat gathered on her brows. "Nothing seems to escape your watchful gaze," Jacqueline stated.

"I've spent years with Alexander, I know him too well. Why do you want your relationship to be kept a secret?"

Jacqueline's head snapped up. "I did not remember telling you about it."

"Well I am sorry. But I couldn't help it, I eavesdropped on your conversation with him."

A look of understanding spread across her face. "You eavesdropped on us? I am not angry that you listened to our conversation. It's just that, I do not want to attract unnecessary attention," she lied.

"And what attention could you be talking about? I do not see anything wrong in that. Being with Alexander is a good decision. If you have your reservation about him, just know that he means no harm," granny Penelope Said.

"I know he means no harm but everything is happening so fast. "

"Perhaps, you feel that the workers would gossip about you and you don't want that. Am I right?"

Jacqueline knew that granny Penelope wouldn't let her be if she didn't admit the truth. It's best if she allows Penelope to continue with her theories. "Yes, I want it to be a secret for now. I just want to take my time with him before going public."

"Alright, now I understand you better." Penelope held Jacqueline's hands and spoke with assurance. " I can see how much he cares about you. Just give him a chance. You won't regret it."

"Thank you granny Penelope." Then she hugged Penelope affectionately.

She patted Jacqueline on her back. "You're welcome." Then she pulled back.

"Can you get my phone? I left it on the table close to the window," granny Penelope said.

"Alright, I had better get going." Then Jacqueline left the kitchen. On her way she thought of the possibility of being with Alexander but she shrugged it off.

If Alexander knew that she betrayed him, then it would be a huge mess.
