Chapter 69
Chapter 69-The mafia's possession
Guilt gnawed at her heart as she thought of how Chain has succeeded in turning her into his informant. Her life was no longer hers. She felt bad that she was acting on Chain's instructions to.get Alexander down.
She felt completely useless and selfish at that moment. Turning on those who trust you so much is the worst thing to do.
When she got to the door, she twisted the door knob and got in. Then closed the door behind her. Her eyes darted around the room, it was large and well furnished. The windows were opened, making it easy for air to come in.
Granny Penelope had instructed her to get her phone from her room. She walked to the table and she saw the phone lying on the table. Then she grabbed it and made to leave. Something on the bed caught her eyes, so she drew closer to have a better look. She found several pictures scattered on the bed.
As she looked at the pictures one after the other, suddenly she gasped when she saw a picture of a woman. She was perplexed by the uncanny resemblance she has with the woman. Who could she be?
She shrugged her shoulders, maybe it's nothing. People do look alike most times.
She looked at it one more time, before leaving with the phone. When she got to the kitchen, she found granny Penelope stirring something in the pot. She stopped the moment she saw her.
"Do you have it?," she asked as she turned to Jacqueline.
Jacqueline handed the phone to Penelope. "Here, this is your phone."
Penelope's lips curled up in a smile as she collected the phone . "Thanks. Can you watch over.what I am.cooking? I need to make an important call."
"Alright, I will watch over it," she replied.
"Good, I won't take long," Then granny Penelope hurriedly left the kitchen.
Jacqueline sighed, then she checked the pot on.the stovetop. As she opened, the delicious aroma of chicken soup wafted through the air and her stomach rumbled. She clutched her stomach, she was yet to have breakfast. After stirring it one more time, she turned the stove off and brought down the pot.
She sat down on one of the chairs, waiting for granny Penelope. While she waited, her mind flashed back to the picture she found on granny Penelope's bed.
Who could the woman be? She looks every inch like the woman in the picture. The only difference was that the woman was older than her. They had the same eyes, same facial structure. The woman's hair was also black like hers.
There was nothing to be worried about. Maybe it's just a coincidence that they both share the same look and nothing more.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and she stiffened in shock. Swiftly, she turned around to find granny Penelope behind her.
Jacqueline exhaled as she touched her chest. "You startled me. When did you get in?"
Granny Penelope smiled and sat on the chair. "I have been standing close to you for some minutes. I called you but you were lost in thought."
She was surprised. "I did not hear you. Sorry about that."
"That's alright. So tell me. What were you thinking about? You seemed lost in thought," granny Penelope's voice was laced with concern as she leaned forward, looking at Jacqueline.
How then will she tell her about the picture she found on her bed? That would make her think she was snooping around and she doesn't want granny Penelope to think that of her. She yawned. "I am so hungry, I could eat a horse."
Granny Penelope stood up quickly. "Oh, I forgot. Let me serve you breakfast. You must be hungry."
Jacqueline was glad that she had diverted her attention. She watched granny Penelope as she served the food and dropped hers on the table.
Jacqueline's eyes lit up in appreciation. "Thank you," she muttered. And then she took a spoon and closed her eyes as she savoured the taste. " This is delicious."
Granny Penelope laughed heartily and sat down to eat, her own dish was placed on the table. "I am glad you like it."
Her eyes were opened already. In a mouthful she replied. "This is the best meal I have had for a while now."
Penelope's eyes twinkled as a smile spread across her face. "Really, what have you been eating in my absence?"
Penelope sank her teeth into the tasty chicken and chewed before responding. "I prepared the meals while you travelled but it doesn't come close to your cooking. And when Ann came, we ate what she cooked. Yours is the best."
Penelope clapped her hands happily. "I am delighted to know that I make the best meals around here."
Jacqueline dropped her spoon and her eyes darted around. "That reminds me. I haven't seen Ann for a while now. Where is she?"
Penelope was already eating. She swallowed it and quickly took a sip of water from a glass. And dropped it back on the table. "Alexander fired her."
Her jaw dropped open. "W..why?," she stammered.
"About what happened a few days ago. From what he told me, the men keeping watch at the gate, fell asleep after eating after eating lunch. And she was the one who made lunch the day it happened."
Jacqueline pushed her plate away. A feeling of guilt was stirring deep inside her. She knew exactly what played out that day. If there was anyone to be blamed, then it should be her because she was responsible for it.
Ann has lost her source of income because of her. She sighed deeply. Will she ever forgive herself for all she has done?
Granny Penelope touched her gently on her hand. "Jacqueline, what is it? You look sad."
"It's nothing actually. I am just tired and my head aches," she said as she rubbed her temple.
She was becoming good at telling lies effortlessly. She felt terrible for lying.
Penelope's eyes softened with emotion. "You can rest. I will handle things around here."
Jacqueline's phone rang immediately which startled her. When she saw the name on the caller ID.
