Chapter 34:Mafia’s possession
"What in God's name are you doing in there?," Penelope asked as she looked at Jacqueline in surprise.
Jacqueline was caught off guard, she wasn't expecting to see her here. She stood by the doorway, still shocked to see Penelope.
Penelope's eyes were fixed on Jacqueline. She was carrying piles of towels in her hand and froze in her tracks when she saw Jacqueline. "What are you doing here?," she repeated the question.
Jacqueline's face had drained colour and she was flustered. How does she explain being in Alexander's bathroom? "Uhmm, I came to clean his room. So I decided to check if his bathroom needs to be clean," she lied. Hoping that Penelope wouldn't ask more questions.
Granny Penelope beamed into a smile. "That's thoughtful of you. Before I forget, do you mind checking the sauce I left in the kitchen?"
Jacqueline felt an instant relief, nodding her head in agreement. "Yes, I will do that for you."
"That's so sweet of you. Just hurry to the kitchen," Penelope said.
"Alright," Jacqueline walked to the door and twisted the handle. The door opened and she got out. It's a good thing that Penelope did not suspect her.
When she got into the kitchen, the pot was on the cooker and Jacqueline washed her hands before using the spoon to stir the sauce in the pot. She was almost salivating, the delicious aroma filled the kitchen. It kept bubbling on the cooker after sometime, she turned it off.
Just then granny Penelope entered the kitchen. "Thank you. Seems it's ready now. Let me serve breakfast, just you and I. Alexander won't be returning anytime soon."
Jacqueline smiled as she thought of a way to ask questions about Alexander without making it look like she was prying into his private life. "It's nothing granny. I love cooking. He must have gone somewhere important."
Penelope was already dishing out breakfast. When Jacqueline mentioned Alexander, she paused and turned towards her. "Sadly, I do not have an idea about his whereabouts. I am an employee just as you are."
Her heart sank in her stomach. Know one seemed to know much about Alexander. Not even Penelope. Alexander had mastered the act of being elusive. Aside from the phone conversation she overheard, nothing else came forth. It was like he was shrouded in mystery.
After eating breakfast she helped granny Penelope to clear the table and she cleaned the dishes.
"Jacqueline, I will be out for a little time. Can you handle everything in the mansion? I promise, I won't stay long. I just need to deliver a parcel to someone," Penelope said as she regarded Jacqueline with a warm gaze. She noticed how tired Jacqueline looked. The poor girl must have been overworking herself.
"That won't be a problem. I will do as instructed," she bit her tongue to stop herself from asking more questions. She had given Chain reliable information. So let him use that. The whole thing was getting on her nerves. She felt like running away to a place where she would find peace but it was not possible. Chain has a strong hold on her. Running away is not the best option at the moment.
She was done arranging the dishes on the rack and she stood there, lost in thoughts.
"Jacqueline," Penelope called, but she got know response. Then she tapped her lightly on tge shoulder.
The tap on her shoulder jolted her out of her thoughts. She had forgotten that Penelope was in the kitchen with her. She smiled, trying to mask how she felt that moment. She was embarrassed and she became nervous as Penelope drew closer. Her eyes were filled with concern.
"You look nervous, Jacqueline. Did I scare you? I am sorry, I didn't mean to. You don't look fine to me. You know you can always talk to me about anything, right?"
Tears welled up in Jacqueline's eyes as she blinked repeatedly, trying to stop the tears from flowing. Which was impossible. At that moment, tears streamed down her face as she couldn't hold it anymore.
Penelope enveloped Jacqueline in a comforting hug as she rubbed her back gently. "Stop crying, Jacqueline."
Jacqueline was grateful for granny Penelope's concern. She wished she could tell her the truth but knowing what is at stake, prevented her. She felt bad that she was just here to spy on Alexander. And Penelope trusts her, when the truth finally comes out. She was sure that Penelope would be disappointed with her.
"Thank you granny. It's just that my emotions are all jumbled up.I just need to be in my room, I will be fine."
Penelope had a worried look on her face. "Are you sure about that?"
She nodded gingerly, spending more time here will make her emotional. She needed the privacy of her room. "Yes, granny."
"It's okay. You can take the day off and rest. You should stop worrying because it will never solve the problem. Rather it makes it look big. You can.go to your room," Penelope said, her voice had a tinge of concern. "Thanks, I will be in my room." Jacqueline rushed out of the kitchen and took a turn leading to her room.
She opened the door and got in. She heaved a sigh as she closed the door behind her. Exhausted from the day's events, she fell on her bed and closed her eyes.
Her phone rang. "Not again," she groaned as she stomped her feet in frustration. Checking the caller ID, she became relieved when she saw Aries on it. She thought it was Chain.
"Hello, Aries, how are you doing? And my sister, how is she?"
"I am doing just fine Jacqueline. Your sister is fine, though she is asleep."
Jacqueline smiled, she was happy that her sister is doing great but she was worried that Chain might do something terrible. "Aries, there is something you must do. Please, you just have to help me out."
"Jacqueline, are you alright? Tell me, I can do anything to help," Aries said.
She shut her eyes tight as tears slipped down her cheeks. "Jannie's life is in danger."
