Chapter 51: Mafia’s possession

"Granny Penelope! ," Jacqueline rushed into Penelope's waiting arms and hugged her tightly. "You're back. I wasn't expecting to see you," Jacqueline said. And then she pulled back gently. Penelope's lips stretched into a beautiful smile.

"Yes, I am back. It's so good to see you again," she replied.

"Come in and tell me how your trip went," she said, her face radiating with smiles.Holding her hand, Jacqueline pulled her into her room and closed the door.

Penelope sat down close to Jacqueline on the bed. "Of course, I will tell you how my trip went. First, you'll fill me in on what happened in my absence.

She sighed, then bit her lower lips. Pondering on everything that has happened in her absence. Tucking a loose tendril behind her head, she responded. " I did all you asked me to. Everything went smoothly and I am certain that Ale.. uhm, Mr. Vladimir is pleased with my services," she quickly caught herself in time by not addressing him by his first name.

Penelope raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?," a look of doubt flashed through her face for a second before it vanished. "Then what is the new cook doing here?," she questioned.

"Cook? What cook?"

"Don't play dumb with me, Jacqueline. Ann, isn't she the new cook?"

Jacqueline palmed her temples as she rubbed it gently. She has only been here for a few minutes and she already knows about the new cook. Nothing ever seems to escape her eyes. "Yes, I forgot to tell you. Although, Mr. Vladimir said nothing to me. I'm as surprised as you are when I saw her."

Penelope squinted her eyes and her index finger drifted to her lower lips as she stroked it gently, as she thought about what Jacqueline just said. Shifting her gaze back to Jacqueline, she leaned forward, her face etched with worry. "Are you saying that nothing happened while I was away?"

Jacqueline was startled, her complexion turned pale. She looked downward as she twisted her fingers in her lap.

The room was thick with a pin-drop silence and Penelope shifted on the bed almost making contact with Jacqueline. She had a worried expression on her face. Then she squeezed Jacqueline's hands gently. "Working for Mr. Vladimir is not a walk in the pack. Sometimes you just have to show understanding. He is not a monster."

She smiled weakly. "Thanks for your words but Mr. Vladimir is an ass," she blurted out. Her hands flew to her mouth when she realised what she had just said.

Penelope's eyes crinkled at the corners as she chuckled. "An ass, huh? Seems a lot happened in my absence. Just be careful." Using her arms to push herself up, she got up. "I need to be in my room. I will see you later." She slapped her temple, " I almost forgot, I got you a gift. You'll love it."

Jacqueline's eyes sparkled. "You got me a gift?," she got up and enveloped Penelope into an affectionate hug. "Thank you, granny Penelope, You're so sweet," she said cheerfully. Pulling back gently, she smiled.

Penelope tapped her arm gently. "You're welcome. Besides, I want you to be happy."

"You have successfully put a smile on my face."

"Alright, I need to rest my old bones." Jacqueline followed her to the door. And Penelope opened it and walked out.

She closed the door and rushed to her bed. Thinking about all Penelope had said.

Yea, right. That nut job has allies who are ready to defend him. She rolled her eyes. Penelope would always speak well of him. As if he was a benevolent god. She smirked, she flung the pillow across the room. A tiny spark of anger lit up in her as the memory of how he had ignored her like she was just a piece of furniture.

The reason for his actions were not lost to her. He wanted them to be lovers. Which she was not ready for. She wouldn't want to be caught in the entangled web of deceit. If her mission comes to an end, she knew that Chain would order her to leave immediately without considering her feelings. She was only being careful with her heart.

She chided herself for giving in to him last night. Well it's of no use crying over spilt milk.

Jacqueline got up from her bed to check on the laundry man. She opened her door and stepped out. Taking the stairs, she got down and walked through a hallway with rooms on each side. When she got to the last room, she knocked.

"Come in," a voice said.

She twisted the door knob and got in. The fresh clean scent of detergent hit her nostrils and the hum of the washing machine and dryer filled the room. A man approached her. He was dressed in a plain white t-shirt, black pants and he had an apron on. His name tag reads ' Alfred' in bold letters.

"Hello, I came to get his clothes," Jacqueline said.

"Let me get the clothes," he left and returned with a basket filled with the clothes. Which were neatly folded. "Here, I am done with it."

She smiled as she stretched her hands and collected it from him and then she left almost immediately.

When she got to Alexander's room, she was relieved that Santos was not in sight. The door opened and Jacqueline almost stumbled in shock.

"Hi, Jacqueline", it was Ann, she flashed Jacqueline a smile as she came out of Alexander's room.

"Ann," Jacqueline stammered. "What are you doing here?

"Oh, Mr. Vladimir instructed me to clean his room. Let me have the laundry. You don't have to bother with it."

Jacqueline's throat went dry, she opened her mouth to speak but managed a whisper. "Sure, you can have it." She said and handed the basket to Ann.

"Alright," Ann mouthed and she walked in and slammed the door.

She was stunned. First, it was the kitchen, now this. Is he trying to fire her? What is going on?
