Chapter 107

Greta yelled, grabbing her head.

"I don't have anything to hide," Greta said,

"Whatever you think you know, it's wrong. I have nothing to hide and I don't owe any of you any explanation whatsoever."

One step closer, Romano peered right into her soul. "Nothing to hide, huh?" he growled low. "Then why don't you go ahead and tell us exactly what you've been doing, Greta? And leave nothing out."

Her eyes flickered across to Jacqueline, standing by Romano's side, her arms crossed, her lips curled in a scornful smile.

"I've done nothing but be loyal to this family," Greta exclaimed. "Alexander is my stepson! I love him as if he were my own. How could I ever harm him?"

“No one asked her about Alexander you know, you see you had so many Secrets, you don't even know which one you were asking for. Hopeless bitch”. Romano spat.

Jacqueline cut her off at that sharp voice.

"Loyal? To Alexander? Do not insult our intelligence, Greta." She came closer. "Everybody knows that you have always been obsessed with your son, Bruno, being the head of the Vincenzo family. And we all know how far you'd go to make that happen."

Greta's face flushed indignantly. "How dare you insinuate that I'd harm Alexander to further my son? I helped raise that boy and his twin brother since they were 10 years old! I've treated him as my own flesh and blood!

Romano raised an eyebrow. "As your own blood?" he said with sarcasm laced in his voice. "Then why did you try to kill him through that lowlife, Chain?" His voice was thick with contempt.

"Wasn't it you who Chain was working for? Chain who tried to take Alexander out of the picture so Bruno would fall next in line?"

It felt like an accusation to a blow, and yet Greta held firm. "That is a lie!" she exclaimed. "I would never do such a thing. Chain acted on his own; I had nothing to do with it!"

“Will you shut up old woman, your lies, they disgust me. How can you be lying at this age of your miserable life”. Jacqueline said.

So far quiet, Brenda suddenly silenced everybody with her voice. "Mother-in-law, this doesn't make any sense, but I'm starting to believe they are right."

"do you remember last month when I saw you in the kitchen, alone with Alexander's drink?"

Greta's blood ran cold. "What do you imply, Brenda?"

"I'm not insinuating anything. I could have sworn I saw you put something in his glass," Brenda shot back, razor-sharp. "At the time, I didn't think anything of it, but now. it's starting to make sense." She paused, her eyes clouding. "Were you trying to poison him, Greta?"

Greta took a shaky breath. "Brenda, I would never…"

"Enough of the lies!" Bruno, her son, let out for the first time, in anger. "Mother," he hollered, "just tell the truth! Stop lying to everyone, to yourself!"

The facade cracked, and Greta's breath caught as she looked down, she was trying to fight her son's disappointment.

She had tried so hard to protect Bruno-to make sure he had everything she felt he deserved. Now he was standing against her, his eyes imploring her for the truth.

She finally spoke with a quivering voice, her words hardly above a whisper,

"Bien. oui." She swallowed and her confession hung in the thick air. "Oui, j'ai détesté Alexander se voit donner tout, toutes les choses que je voulais pour Bruno!" All the attention, all the respect, all the power. Her voice caught as her eyes welled up with tears. "And what was left for my son? Nothing. Nothing but scraps."

Romano looked at her angrily. "So you thought the solution was to kill Alexander? To poison him in the shadows like a coward?"

Greta shook her head violently. "I only wanted him. weakened," she stammered, "just enough so he wouldn't be this strong, faultless leader that everybody admired. I wanted Bruno to have a chance to be seen, to be respected. to be chosen."
A sneer contorted Jacqueline's lips as she stepped forward. "You lying whore," she hissed, and her voice was full of venom. In a flash, she lashed out and slapped Greta across the face, leaving that loud smacking sound in the room.

"Did you really think we would never find out? Did you really think you'd get away with this? Now you come in here demanding to see Vincenzo."
Greta's hand flew to her cheek, skin stinging from the blow. Tears spilled down her face, her composure was exposed and totally shattered.

"You useless girl," she sobbed. "I was doing it for my son. I didn't want him to be left in the shadows forever. I did what any mother would have done for their child."

"Your son doesn't even respect you anymore, Greta,” Jacqueline spat. She looked beside her to Bruno, who was now watching his mother with a look of sorrow and shame upon his face. "Your days are over. All your scheming, your manipulation… it's done."

Bruno slowly shook his head, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. "You always said you wanted the best for me, Mother," he said in a barely audible voice. "But all you've done is poison everything: the family, the trust, the respect-you've managed to destroy it all."

Greta slumped, defeated, all the fight knocked from her body. "Bruno, I… I did it all for you," she whispered.
Romano's voice cut through the room, cold, pitiless. "No, Greta. You did it for yourself." Straightening, his eyes were as hard as steel. "You were willing to destroy anybody so your greed could be satisfied, even if it meant dragging your son down with you."

She looked down at Greta, who now kneeled on the floor, defeated. "You'll pay for this, Greta," she said coldly. "For every lie, for every poison, for every ounce of hurt you heaped on this family." Jacqueline said to Greta while she moved closer to her.
