Chapter 37:mafia’s possession
Jacqueline groaned when she saw the text. It was getting on her nerves and she wished she could just quit being his pawn. She knew that all the information she had been passing to Chain was to destroy Alexander.
Alexander is the heir to a powerful mafia group but he operates discreetly which will make others oblivious of his operations. This made it difficult for her to gather information about him.
She was frustrated because there was nothing to give to Chain. She has been considering the possibility of running away but that will only make matters worse. And Chain will finally get the opportunity to kill her which is what he badly wanted. She agreed to this to save her life and that of her sister's.
Still holding her phone, she went to her gallery and started looking at pictures of her and Jannie. A lone tear slipped down from her eye and she sniffed it back. If anything goes wrong, that will be the end. This strengthened her resolve to stay alive and do what is expected of her.
It was almost time for dinner, she kept her phone on the table and walked to the door. She twisted the handle and opened the door, and stepped out.
When she got to the kitchen, granny Penelope had prepared dinner already.
"Good evening, granny. You're done?" Jacqueline inched closer to Penelope.
"Yes, I made dinner. When you're done cleaning the kitchen you can take yours. I would have cleaned the kitchen but my back hurts. Can you do that for me?," Penelope asked.
Jacqueline's eyes brimmed with concern. "Your back hurts? Sorry about that, you need to see the doctor."
Granny Penelope laughed. "Have I told you that you worry too much?"
She cocked her head to the side. "Let me think, uhm, yes. You have said it like a dozen times," then she burst into laughter and Penelope smiled as she watched Jacqueline.
"You're such a silly girl. Well, I am glad that you're looking bright and happy," Penelope stated.
Jacqueline gazed at Penelope in surprise. This woman definitely knows how to read her like a book. Why won't she? When all she has done this morning was to wear a gloomy look on her face. She was under pressure from Chain and each time he sent a text, she ended up being in a sad mood.
"I did not make dinner for Alexander. He won't be coming in tonight," she paused as she observed Jacqueline under her keen eyes. Then she continued. "Mr. Vladimir is a busy man."
Jacqueline chuckled. "Obviously."
"What were you doing in his room this morning?," Penelope asked.
Jacqueline was caught off guard by this question. She bit her lips, she couldn't bring herself to look Penelope in the eye. "I went there to clean his room," she blurted out.
"I see. But you were not with any cleaning material," Penelope said.
Jacqueline's heart began to beat faster as she thought of a way to slip past this question. She should have known that Penelope wouldn't believe her. But at that moment, she was desperate which prompted her to act irrational. Argh, this was Chain's fault.
"I was actually coming out to get the cleaning material when you showed up," a look of anxiety flashed in her face. She was fidgeting and her eyes darted around.
Penelope raised an eyebrow. "Really? I may be an old woman, that doesn't mean I am not dimwitted. I knew you were searching his room. And I wonder why."
"I..I was not searching his room," Jacqueline stuttered.
Penelope regarded her with a stern look. "I don't know why you were going through his stuff. Quit whatever silly games you're playing or you'll get hurt at the end. Alexander is not one to be toyed with. You can have your dinner."
Penelope handed a tray to Jacqueline and walked out of the kitchen. Leaving Jacqueline who was feeling guilty and ashamed. She stood there for a moment, looking at her tray before dropping it on the counter.
Her chest heaved and she started to cry. Penelope trusted her so much. She became scared that Alexander would be informed. Without wasting time, she ran after Penelope.
She walked past some of the maids in the mansion. Since she arrived, she has not spoken to them or gotten acquainted with them. She heard them whispering amongst themselves.
"She is always full of herself," one of the maids said.
"Does she have anything with the boss?," another chipped in.
Jacqueline stopped in her tracks when she heard all these. She shut her eyes tight, trying to contain her anger which had reached a boiling point. Her eyes opened and she spun around making eye contact with them and they burst into laughter, making jest of her.
She felt humiliated by their hurtful words, she ignored them and walked away. When she got to Penelope's room, she lingered at the door. As she was hesitant, she felt the need to apologise but she was not sure if Penelope would give her a listening ear. She decided to give it a try and then, she knocked at the door.
No response, she repeated the knock but got no response. She sighed deeply as the feeling of regret washed over her.
"Looking for someone?,"
She spun swiftly, to see Penelope standing behind her. She smiled weakly. "Uhm, I w...would like to say something."
Penelope eyed her disapprovingly as she placed her hands behind her back, clasped together. "I am listening, Jacqueline."
As she struggled to hold back tears, she swallowed a lump and continued. "I am deeply sorry for my actions."
Penelope's eyes melted with tenderness. "Come with me."
Jacqueline followed her inside and the door was closed. The room was spacious and well furnished. She watched as Penelope sat on a chair. While she stood before her. "Apologies accepted. I work for Alexander and he should be the one you should apologise to."
Jacqueline's eyes widened in fear. "Please, don't make me do that. I promise, there won't be a repeat."
"Fine. So tell me, why did you search his room?," Penelope asked.
The question slammed into her like a sledgehammer. She became scared that if the truth is discovered, Alexander will be informed. She was caught at a crossroad not knowing what to do next.
Tell granny Penelope the truth to get her trust or remain loyal to Chain to save her sister's life?
