Chapter 98
Jacqueline stared at the man who sat on the only seat in her ward, hate and disgust were the only feeling she could muster as she glared at him.
Tears kept streaming down her face and no matter how she cleaned it, it just wouldn't stop flowing. He didn't hurt her, hell someone like him could never hurt her, he hurt someone close to her and that's the reason for her tears.
"Didn't know a spitfire like you could cry." Vincenzo said, looking away, unable to hold her gaze anymore.
"Yeah, I guess not everyone is as emotionless as you parade yourself to be." She said, wiping her eyes clean.
"Parade? Baby, I am emotionless. I don't feign it. Emotions are for the weak, pathetic humans, I am not weak and am not pathetic." Vincenzo said sharply.
"Keep telling yourself that." Jacqueline snorted.
"I see through you Godfather. You're not that robot you pretend to be, you're something more. Under that wall, that stone cold heart you've built ever since you lost or since you committed a grave sin over your heart, there's a man that actually cares and he's begging to be saved. Again, you don't fool me."
Immediately she finished, Vincenzo burst out into a forced laugh. "Jeez, you should really consider being a therapist. You will fail at it, woefully." He said, his smile fading. He was wrong, and she was right. He's not as emotionless as he pretends to be, her statement got to him and he hates that she could read him when no one else could, he hates that he let her statement hit him hard.
"Go ahead and mock it, shade it like you do to everything around you, but deep down you know what am saying is the truth. Maybe if you stop with the uncaring attitude, Alexander might just consider forgiving." Jacqueline said, relaxing on the bed. Her lower belly were beginning to hurt and she had no idea why.
"Forgive me? For what. I don't remember offending him in anyway. And you talked about a grace sin I committed, what that might be, Jackie?" Vincenzo asked. He knows the sin he committed, he's just checking if she knows.
"How will I know? Did I introduce myself and you as Vincenzo Vladimir?" She asked, sarcasm lacing her tone.
"You've disrespected me more than I'd like to admit in ten minutes, than any of my colleagues has done in ten years." He said.
"Well, I'm not scared of you to begin with and I would call you out the moment you mess up. This is me calling you out for what you've done for ten years." Jacqueline shrugged.
"Is that right?" Vincenzo shook his head, as much as he hated to admit, he needed someone like her in his family. She will cause a lot of troubles, but it's fine, he or his son will be there.
"How much do you want?" Vincenzo asked after a moment of silence.
Jacqueline who shut her eyes close opened it.
"I don't understand." She muttered.
"How much do you want, how much will it take you to run for the hills, leave Alexander, build your life somewhere else, somewhere free of crime. Where you don't have to look over your shoulder when you go for a walk, get married to a business man who has no relations with the mafia world, have kids and be happy. How much do you want? Any number you mention, I'll double it." Vincenzo kept his eyes, watching her reactions as he spoke. Not once did she move or her eyes twitch, she still had that blank look on.
"Hold up. You want to pay me to leave your son?" Jacqueline asked, pointing at her chest, not sure the man was referring to her. How sick was this man? Didn't he register everything she just said in that big head of his?
"Of course, I believe my money and resources can get anything I want, and it certainly can get you to leave him. I don't want you for Alexander." He said.
Jacqueline chuckled, getting on her feet.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"Going to apologize to Alexander-" Vincenzo's lips turned downward, smiling in satisfaction, although he was disappointed.
"Apologizing to him because the heavens would have done better and gave him a better father." She finished her statement and immediately the smile on Vincenzo's face disappeared, turning into a frown.
"If you think am that cheap and I'll take a penny from you at the cost of leaving Alex, you've got to be kidding. Get your brain checked, Godfather." Jacqueline said, the disgust feeling towards him doubling.
"Why? You're poor and helpless. Without him, you're nothing. I'll offer thirty million dollars and you're set for the rest of your life. Go somewhere that you won't have a fear of getting shot because you're walking on the street. You don't have to stay, Jacqueline. I thought you're wise, girl. This is a one time offer. I'll never let you marry Alexander, not when I'm alive." Vincenzo said, he would say anything to make this girl break and choose his offer.
Jacqueline stared at him like he had lost it, because he really has.
"You said something there, Vincenzo. Without him I'm nothing, why should I leave the one person who gives my life purpose? Who brings color to my darkness. Why are so bent on taking your son's happiness? A father should have his son's best interest at heart, do anything to make him happy, why are you doing the opposite?" She asked, raking her hands through her hair. This was too much, how did God choose this messed up soul to father someone as innocent and sane as Alexander.
"I have his best interest at heart, I know what will make him happy and none of them requires you to be here. I'm not doing the opposite, I'm doing the right thing."
"In a sick and demented way!" Jacqueline yelled before she could stop herself.
"You are sick, Vincenzo."
