Chapter 56:Mafia’s possession
"I live on my own terms. No one, not even you, can make me act against my will," Alexander spat.
"We'll see about that. I have my ways," his father reiterated. Then the phone line went dead with a click.
He wrapped his fingers around his sleek phone, tightening his grip on it. He felt like crushing the phone in his hand. His father's words rang in his ears. He doesn't give a fuck about his threat but his father knows how to get into his head.
He'd rather die than sit on the glorified throne of the mafia group. Well, talking about death, he once escaped death and his twin, Alessandro, took the fall. At least, that's what everyone thinks. If only everyone knows the truth. It will leave them in a perpetual state of shock.
All these years, he had concealed the truth about what really happened the day his twin died. His little secret was more of a burden which he shared with no one.
Thinking about it now, made him have flashes of how his father treated Alessandro with disdain and scorn like he was garbage. Just because he loved painting and will spend more time indoors working on a canvas.
Alessandro never took part in the dealings of the mafia group, he kept everything at arms length. While he, Alexander was his father's favourite. Always ready to do his father's dirty work to score points against his brother.
It was so easy for Alessandro to be killed. He had never remained the same after that incident. And made a decision never to take over from his father.
"Alexander."
His train of thought was disrupted and he jerked his head up and he saw Jacqueline's eyes staring right back at him. "Jacqueline, you're awake! " He sprang up from the chair and hurried to her side. His eyes crinkled at the corners with smiles.
"Alexander, how did I get here?," she whispered softly, trying to feign a surprised look.
He could barely contain his joy as he dropped soft kisses all over her face. "Are you alright? Should I call the doctor?," his voice was laced with concern.
"No, I am fine." Jacqueline held his hand which made him stop from moving towards the door.
Jacqueline struggled to sit up as she tried not to shake the IV tube in her hand. If she gets her act together, he will not suspect a thing.
Alexander sat close to her on the bed which dipped in from his weight. He raised his hand to her cheek and rubbed it gently. "I was so worried about you, Jacqueline."
She held his hand then ran her hand through it which was hairy beneath her touch. "I am fine now. What really happened?"
He dropped his hand. "I was hoping you'd tell me once you've awakened. Tell Jacqueline, what happened to you?"
Her breath hitched in her throat and she blinked repeatedly. Then she averted her eyes from him. "I can't remember what happened," she lied, hoping he wouldn't see through her. "It happened so fast."
He furrowed his brows. "Are you saying you don't remember what happened?"
She nodded quickly. "Yes, I only remembered someone hitting me from behind and I slumped down. That was it." Her heart pounded hard against her chest as she lied through her teeth.
There was a strange look on his face. She couldn't say what it was. Did he believe her?
"It's okay. I don't want to trigger bad memories. Just rest. While I go get the doctor." He got up and left.
Jacqueline sighed in relief. That was a close one. Now that she has successfully lied to him, she'll have to be more careful going forward.
The door opened and the doctor walked in, he was closely followed by Alexander who came in and shut the door behind him.
After checking her for a few minutes, he scribbled down on his notepad. Then he adjusted his spectacles. "She is alright. There are no side effects. She is lucky that the drug wore off fast. She will be discharged today."
Her eyes widened in surprise. "Did you say drugs? I can't remember taking that," she freaked out.
In no time, Alexander was standing beside her. "Calm down Jacqueline. He didn't mean it that way. Turns out that you were injected with some hard substance which made you unconscious," he explained.
Jacqueline exhaled as she steadied her breathing. Gosh! She felt stupid for not paying attention earlier. "Oh, alright. I thought he meant something else."
Soon afterwards, the doctor discharged her and she walked out of the hospital with Alexander. He opened the door for Jacqueline and she got in. Then he turned to the driver side and hopped in before driving out of the parking lot.
It was just a twenty minute drive to the mansion. The gate opened and he drove in. Granny Penelope rushed to her the moment she got down. She hugged Jacqueline.
Her eyes glistened with tears and she sniffed back. " I thought I'd lose you. You're back and I am glad to see you're alright."
She smiled brightly. "Thanks for your concern. Mr. Vladimir made it possible."
Penelope laughed heartily and waved her hands in the air. "How can I forget that? He did what was expected of him. He knows I won't let him breathe if he doesn't do anything."
Alexander chuckled and he walked in leaving the women to their chit chat. He has something important to work on.
Granny Penelope walked in with Jacqueline as they chatted happily like two lovers. "I made something special for you. You'll love it," Penelope gushed.
Jacqueline went into her room when Penelope walked into the kitchen to get her something to eat.Jacqueline plumped down on her bed in exhaustion.
She was glad that the whole terrible incident was behind her. When Chain held her captive, she thought she would die.
Now he has set a new plan in motion which was to get the document from Alexander's safe.
Argh!
How will she perform this daunting task?
