Chapter 38 Disappeared During the Exam
"Everything depends on luck. I'll do my best," John responded.
He didn't take the senior year special training class too seriously. It would be great if he could get in, but it didn't matter if he didn't. After all, he had the system.
"Mom, Dad, why don't you care about my grades?" David expressed his dissatisfaction from the side.
David thought, 'Aren't I your son? My final exams are over, and you don't have any expectations?'
"Your grades have always been stable; nothing much to ask about," Carter said. "Unless you have a chance to be second to last this time."
"Not really," David admitted. "I just wanted you to ask."
Carter shook his head and smiled, "You often disappoint us, so we're used to it."
David suddenly thought of something and said, "Dad, Mom, I'm about to turn eighteen and want to live on my own to experience independence."
"You've actually realized this." Carter's eyes widened as he looked at his son, finding it hard to believe.
"Of course, I am your son, after all!" David proudly patted his chest and said, "Dad, Mom, I've already packed your bags. You can leave anytime."
For a moment, the dining table fell silent.
So that was what David meant. John stifled a laugh. It was truly hilarious.
"Are you looking for a beating?" Carter said, and a shadow suddenly appeared, hitting David.
David held his head, looking aggrieved. "Dad, how can you use a contract spirit to hit me?"
John then saw that it was a small monkey about 1 foot tall.
"Just teaching you a lesson." Carter summoned his contract spirit back while Susan smiled silently.
John's eyes flickered, recognizing the black monkey.
Most of the high school biology curriculum covered beasts from the Alternate Dimension, but it also recorded some common human contact spirits.
Carter was an Iron-level Beast Tamer, and his contract spirit had undergone a bloodline evolution.
The monkey had evolved from a common monkey into a violent monkey, with its potential rating jumping from C to B.
Although bloodline evolution could change the potential rating, the initial rating of a contracted spirit still significantly impacted a Beast Tamer's life.
John's Slime was rated F. If it followed a common evolution path, its potential rating would rise to E when he became Iron-level.
However, other people's contract spirits would also evolve, meaning the gap would always exist.
The only way he could bridge the gap was if John could awaken a rare evolution path, causing a significant jump in potential rating, but the probability of that was very low.
Therefore, Beast Tamers were essentially ranked from the moment of awakening, with talent being far more important than effort.
Of course, those with a system were exceptions.
The family finished dinner in a happy atmosphere.
John returned to his home, looking forward to the Beast Taming Studies exam the next day.
The next day arrived quickly.
South River High School had become much quieter, with only the freshman and sophomore Beast Tamers remaining. The other students had already started their summer vacation.
Harper walked in and said calmly, "Today's Beast Taming Studies exam is crucial. I hope you all give it your best."
With that, he led Beast Taming Class 5 to the school's Beast Manor.
Outside the Beast Manor, long lines had already formed, with over two hundred students waiting in an orderly fashion for the exam.
Soon, the students of Beast Taming Class 5 entered the venue in an orderly manner.
The Beast Manor was vast, with not only arenas for Beast Tamer battles but also three large exam halls inside, designated for each grade. The 121 sophomore Beast Tamers entered the exam hall.
"The Beast Taming Studies exam, as per usual standards, is divided into five assessments," the grade director announced the exam rules to everyone. "First is the potential rating of the students' contact spirits. If there are any errors, students can come forward to correct them."
When students were enrolled, the school assessed and recorded their potential, and errors were generally not expected.
If there were any errors, they could naturally be corrected. However, this required the student to share their own "contract spirit" panel with others. The potential rating on this panel could not be falsed.
The grade director said, "Ava, potential rating: A!"
"Karl, potential rating: A!"
"Eileen, potential rating: B!"
There were only two students with A-rated contract spirits in the grade, but John was the only one with an F-rated contract spirit.
In fact, many students in the regular classes had F-rated contract spirits, but they were self-aware enough to choose to live as ordinary people and not burden their families.
"There should be no objections," the grade director looked down and put away the list.
"Now we begin the second assessment: Beast Tamer level."
Under the guidance of their homeroom teachers, each class lined up in an orderly fashion to record their Beast Taming levels.
The Beast Tamer level assessment was also very simple; students needed to share their contract spirit panel with the teacher, which would display their Beast Tamer level.
"Ava, Level 7 Beast Tamer."
"Karl, Level 6 Beast Tamer."
"Eileen, Level 6 Beast Tamer."
The results of each student were recorded. The students of Beast Taming Class 1, the best class, were all at least Level 5 Beast Tamers.
Soon, it was the turn of Beast Taming Class 5. Fiona, as the Class Representative, naturally stood at the front.
"Fiona, Level 6 Beast Tamer."
The recording teacher was surprised but still announced it.
For a moment, many students looked over, their eyes filled with astonishment.
"So it's Fiona, the former excellent student of Beast Taming Class 1."
The students of Beast Taming Class 1 knew Fiona well. Her achieving this result seemed surprising but quite believable.
Only a few in the grade could compare to Fiona. If it weren't for her poor family background, she wouldn't have chosen Beast Taming Class 5.
Beast Taming Class 5 consumed fewer resources, so the tuition fee was naturally lower.
"It seems she's definitely going to get into the senior year special training class," Ava muttered as she looked at her former rival.
"Liam, Level 4 Beast Tamer."
Soon, Liam's assessment result came out.
Liam looked dejected, his eyes filled with defeat. Even at the end of the term, he hadn't managed to break through, making it unlikely for him to join the special training class.
"Jasmine, Level 4 Beast Tamer!"
"Elise, Level 3 Beast Tamer!"
Most students in Beast Taming Class 5 were Level 3 Beast Tamers, with Level 4 being extremely rare.
Soon, Beast Taming Class 5 finished their assessments.
Homeroom teacher Harper's expression remained unchanged; the results were pretty much as he had expected.
At least Fiona being a Level 6 Beast Tamer was a pleasant surprise.
"Harper, isn't there one more student in your class?" the teacher responsible for recording the results asked, looking at the list.
"Is there another one?"
Harper looked toward the class, his heart jolted, his body suddenly shook, and he said, "Where did John go?"
What was going on? How could John be missing?
