CHAPTER 10
JAX’S POV
As soon as Skylar had been assessed by the doctors and we were sure that the bullet had just grazed her head, I let out a sigh of relief and they took her to a room of her own at our insistence and the doctor came out to see us since we were the ones that came to the hospital with her.
I think we may have scared a few people when we first arrived.
We got out of the ambulance and just started yelling at everyone to get the hell out of the way. We needed them to get the hell out of the way. We weren’t going to settle for anyone making Skylar wait.
Not that they would have since she had a bullet wound to the head. But we weren’t going to take the chance.
After they got Skylar to a room we were standing outside talking to the doctor and he looked pretty concerned.
“We had to cut her clothes off of her so we could get her into a hospital gown. We noticed that there were a lot of scars. A lot more than a normal teenage girl should have. And then we found some bruising where there shouldn’t have been any bruising.” The doctor explained.
When we got to Skylar’s house, we learned a little about the abuse that she had suffered just by her outburst when she thought her dad was at the door. But we didn’t know what he was talking about with this strange bruising.
The whole three of us looked at each other, before we looked back at him puzzled. Except for Harry. He didn’t look puzzled at all. He looked down at the ground and I think he might have known what the doctor was talking about.
“I don’t understand.” Lucas said.
“I decided that it would be best to do an internal exam as well. And we collected a lot of evidence that will be handed over to the police. But she’s been suffering from sexual abuse as well as physical abuse. I’m not too sure how long it’s been going on for, but there’s some significant scarring.” The doctor explained. And I looked over at Harry who looked like he was ready to put his fist through the wall. And honestly, after knowing him for as long as I have, I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually did it.
“What is your relationship to her? Because, I really shouldn’t be talking to anyone that isn’t a relative.” The doctor said.
“I’m her boyfriend.” Harry said, without missing a beat.
Lucas and I both looked at him surprised since he was the one that was more likely to stay the hell away from a situation like this. He never wanted this sort of attention in his life and always seemed completely indifferent about everything. He seemed to really care now. At least, he cared enough to lie about being her boyfriend so we could get information out of them. If that would still work, but it seemed to.
I should have been the one to step forward. I just didn’t think to. I wish I had. I’ve known Skylar for years. Since the moment I met her wandering through the park, I knew that we were going to be really good friends. I should be her biggest supporter right now, but it was Harry who stepped forward to say that he was her boyfriend. I don’t even know why this was bothering me so much. I mean, it’s not like he is her boyfriend. He just said that so the doctor would keep talking. And they knew my history with her now. They knew that I felt so guilty about not staying in touch with her when she obviously needed a friend.
I walked to the window of her room to look in while the nurse was tending to her and when the doctor left the other two walked over to me.
“What can you tell us about her father?” Harry asked.
“Not much. I know that he’s the head of some company. I don’t even know what company he owns. He’s obviously got a lot of money. But that is just basic knowledge from the house that they live in…I’ve never met him. Skylar always made sure that I never did. She would always make up excuses why I couldn’t go to her house if he was there.” I explained. But now I know why. Those excuses were all bullshit and she didn’t want me to see what was going on at home. “It all makes sense now.” I added.
“I actually think I might know something about him. I’ll make some calls and look into it.” Lucas said, pulling out his phone and walking down the hallway to call whatever connections he had through his parents.
“Who do you think he’s calling?” Harry asked.
“I stopped asking myself that question a long time ago. That guy has more connections than either of us could imagine.” I said. And Harry just scoffed as he looked back at Skylar.
I looked back in at Skylar in that hospital bed. She looked so little in that bed. She was so skinny and she looked so fragile.
I couldn’t even explain how I was feeling about everything. I felt guilty, I felt angry, I felt crazy and I felt useless just standing here doing nothing. I couldn’t even explain how these feelings were when they were all meshed up together. I had never felt like this before and it was the worst feeling I’d ever experienced. I should have been there for her. And I don’t think I will ever forgive myself, for never being there. But now I knew that I was going to have to make it up to her. I was going to have to be there with her all the way.
Whatever else is going on in my life right now, it is going to have to wait. At least until Skylar was strong enough. Which by the looks of it, is going to be a long time.
