CHAPTER 41
JAX’S POV
It’s been two weeks since we agreed to start training Skylar and as I am standing next to the house, I am looking down towards the room at the back of the property that we had turned into a training room.
They had the massive double doors open because it had to be really hot in there and the industrial size fans were going to try and cool them down. Harry was busy training with her and she looked completely exhausted.
But she was still refusing to stop. She didn’t want to be seen as a weakness anymore. Especially not in our team, so she’s giving it all she’s got.
But she’s only been at it for two weeks. She’s gotta take it easy. We didn’t get this good in just two weeks.
I really admired her dedication, but I was afraid that she was pushing herself way too hard.
Harry finally stopped her before I went down there and stopped it myself, and he started talking her down from the high that she had to be on at the moment with the adrenaline running through her body.
“Hey, this is self defense. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone.” Harry said, handing her a water bottle.
I watched Skylar as she was finally starting to calm down, but I couldn’t help but feel heartache for her as much as admiration for her resilience. She was stronger than we thought, mentally. But she still has a long way to go. She’s been through hell and back.
And I can’t help but worry about the threat that her father still poses. Like a ticking time bomb that could explode at any moment. And Skylar was going to be the one casualty that he made sure was in the blast zone.
I walked down towards the back building while Harry and Skylar were taking a break and I saw Skylar lie down on the pads on the floor while Harry was standing next to the wall fiddling with his phone.
I laid on the ground next to Skylar and she looked over at me before she looked back up at the ceiling.
“Don’t tell me you were watching that.” Skylar said, breathlessly.
“Why not?” I asked.
“Because that was horrible.” She said. She was obviously beating herself up about it. She’s not happy with how her training is going.
She’s impatient and wants the training and her body to hurry up and catch up with her brain in regards to training. She wishes to be further along, but it doesn’t work like that. It takes time.
“You’re doing great after only two weeks. A lot better than any of us were doing at your level.” I said. But she looked at me like she didn’t believe me. I don’t think she’d believe any of us if we told her how well she was doing. She probably thinks that we’re just humoring her or something like that. But I don’t work like that.
If she wasn’t doing so well, I’d tell her. And so would the others. We don’t mess around when it comes to stuff like this.
Training is one thing that we take really seriously.
I noticed that Harry wasn’t in the room anymore, so I looked towards the house and I saw him walking in the back door so it was just Skylar and I in the training room now.
Skylar rolled onto her side and she started gently stroking my hair without saying anything to me. So I wrap my arm around her and pull her towards me so I can wrap both of my arms around her. I’ve missed this intimacy so much. I knew that I had to savor it while I could, because I didn’t know when it was going to happen again. It’s not like we get much alone time around here.
“You know Jax, I forgave you a long time ago. I think it’s about time you started to forgive yourself. I’m asking you to forgive yourself.” She said, taking me by surprise. I definitely wasn’t expecting that to come out and I didn’t know what the hell to say at first. “Trust me Jax, no matter what darkness you think you have inside of you or that you have faced over the years. I’m never going to run away.” She added, trying to assure me.
And no matter how surprised I was by her understanding of me, I wasn’t so sure that she wasn’t going to run away. She’s doesn’t know the full grasp of the darkness that hides inside of me. And I’m afraid that if she ever does see it, she’ll definitely run.
It’ll be all my fault. Because she won’t just be running away from me, she’ll be running from Lucas and Harry as well. And I don’t know how they would handle losing her.
I know that I wouldn’t be able to handle it.
“Don’t say things that you don’t mean.” I said.
“I don’t care about those things. I don’t care about what you do for William or why you guys have trained the way that you have. I only care about you. And Harry and Lucas.” She assured me.
She may not say much about our personal lives, but she definitely pays attention. I always knew that she was smarter than what people gave her credit for.
“I promise that we will never hurt you again.” I said, staring her in the eyes and she was staring back at me with those beautiful innocent eyes of hers. “I love you, Skylar.” I admitted.
Skylar stared at me for a moment, shocked. I guess she wasn’t expecting that from me. But there it was. I said it and I can’t take it back.
“I love you too, Jax.” She said, moving her hand up to my hair as she started running her hand through my hair again. While biting her lip, looking a little embarrassed that she confessed her feelings to me. But I placed my hand on the side of her face and she looked up at me again.
I slowly leaned forward as she was staring at me and my lips slowly met her lips in a passionate kiss.
Which only confirmed to me what I had suspected for a while now. How much love I had in my heart for this beautiful woman who I almost lost because of my own stupidity.
