CHAPTER 110
We walked out of the panic room and out the back, but Jax stayed at the back door with me while Lucas and Harry tried to see where the stranger had appeared from and disappeared to. When they came back to the house, they looked really confused and Lucas just shook his head. We knew that meant that they couldn’t find anything. There were no clues at all to where he went or how he got onto the property.
The guys took me inside and made sure that every door and window was locked with the extra key locks that they had put in place. I stood there staring at the photos, but I noticed that when they pulled the car out of the water my dad’s body wasn’t in it.
“It’s alright. They would have sent divers down to get his body out of it before they pulled the car out.” Lucas said.
“Why would they go to the effort if he was dead? It would be easier to just pull the car straight out.”
“It would have been out of respect.” Lucas said.
“Listen, there are a lot of unanswered questions about this. Let’s just forget about it for now. The accident was ages ago.” Harry said.
“Then why is someone sending me photos of them now?” I asked.
“I don’t know. And I doubt we’re going to find out who was here. He knew how to get in and out without triggering the alarm. And the alarm that he did trigger, I think he did that on purpose so we would know that he was here.” Lucas said.
I stayed in the kitchen while the guys were checking the rest of the house. I leaned on the island in the middle of the kitchen while staring at the photos. The ones of me escaping the car accident first. It even had photos of the guys arriving at the scene and then fleeing. Which puts them in an even worse spot because the cops could think they had something to do with this if they ever got their hands on these photos. When the guys came back to the kitchen they saw that I had spread all the photos out on the island in the middle of the room staring at them all.
“What are you doing?” Jax asked.
“Trying to see if there are any clues as to who could have taken these. I mean, they had to be waiting for us to come speeding down that road. There are clear photos of us on the highway when I made the sharp turn on purpose which drove us into that lake.” I explained.
“Yeah. Someone who had to know what your father was up to that night.” Harry agreed with me.
“I just can’t see anything here that would give off any clue as to who took these photos.” I said.
“Well, it obviously had to be someone in your dad’s circle. Don’t you think?” He asked.
“I guess.” I said.
“Can you think of anyone?” Lucas asked.
“I only know faces. I don’t know names.” I said. Jax put his arm around my waist as he saw me struggling with trying to figure out who could have done this.
But honestly, my dad had a lot of people working for him. There were a lot of people in his circle. Personal and business. And by business I mean ‘illegal’. He had security guards and probably had insurance policies in place in case someone killed him.
I mean, he probably had money set aside for the person that killed the one that killed him, if that makes any sense. He’d still be dead but I guess even after death he wanted to see his murderer get what they deserved. The thought of that had me a little scared. I mean, what if they come after me and the guys get hurt. I would be able to live with myself if that happened.
None of us ended up going back to sleep that night, so we sat up talking.
We had been sitting around the living room for the better part of the morning when Lucas’ phone started going off. Just by the look on his face, we knew that it was his father. So he took the phone into the other room while he spoke to him. It wasn’t long before we heard him yelling and then he came back to the living room.
“I have to go out for a little while. I’ll try not to be too long.” Lucas said before he went upstairs. He needed to have a shower and change into some clean clothes before he left the house. But he kissed me before he left.
It was strange though. I could basically feel all the tension he was holding when he kissed me and I thought it was a bit strange.
“We still have to go out today.” Harry said.
“We’ll have to wait until Lucas gets back. Who the hell knows what his father wants now.” Jax said.
I sat there quietly listening to them and really trying to think of a way to help the guys get away from William. But I didn’t actually know the extent of the deal that they had with William. So I didn’t know how to help them and I was a little afraid to know about the deal. I mean, what if I don’t want to know? What if it’s so bad that I can’t know what it is? That I wouldn’t be able to look at them again. All I know is that they are in debt to William and he’s making them do unspeakable things to make them pay off the debt.
Which brings me to another question? When the hell is this debt going to be paid?
