CHAPTER 71
We only walked about half a block up the road before we stopped at a dessert bar and we ordered what we wanted and sat down at a table near the window eating and talking.
We definitely both looked way too overdressed to be in here right now. It’s a lot different than the restaurant that we were in, but we didn’t care.
We were enjoying each other’s company until I noticed a couple of guys standing over the road, staring straight into the dessert bar where we were sitting.
Jax noticed how uncomfortable I was getting and I just gestured my head towards the men outside so he looked at them as well.
I saw his face change as soon as he saw them, and his posture got a little tense as well.
“Do you know them?” I asked.
“No. But I’ve heard of them. Real assholes. They think they run the streets of this city.”
“Why are they staring at us?”
“Because I just told you, they’re assholes. And they probably know who I am.”
“Does that mean we’re in trouble here? Are they going to try and start a damn fight with you or something?” I asked, trying not to look out the window at them.
“I doubt it. But we’ll just be careful walking back to the car.” He said, pulling out his phone and he sent a text message.
I didn’t ask him who he sent that to, because I was pretty sure that it was the guys at home. That’s the only thing I could be sure of.
Jax stopped watching the guys outside and started paying attention to me again and he was trying to cheer the mood up again. But I couldn’t help but think that I had seen some of them before.
And then it hit me. The hiking trail with Harry. A couple of those men were following us as we went back to the car. They were following us through the forest.
But I was sure not to bring that up to Jax. Because then he would have something to say about that.
It was good having Jax’s full attention on me. No matter how many other women were looking at him and speaking loud enough to try and get his attention. He never looked away from me.
When we finally walked out of the dessert bar, we started walking down the road and that’s when I realized that those guys weren’t hanging out around the front of the shop anymore.
I was so busy talking to Jax that I didn’t even see them leave. But just as I glanced back, I saw something coming out of the corner of the alley, and a man appeared but it was too dark to see who it was.
It definitely wasn’t one of the guys that that were watching us, but he wasn’t exactly acting normal either.
Jax turned back to look and I knew that he saw the guy, but he just shrugged it off and put his arm around me and pulled my attention away from him again.
I started to wonder if that text message Jax sent had anything to do with those guys suddenly disappearing.
But I also knew better than to ask about it.
I knew that I would be happier not knowing about it.
When we got back to the house it was late and as we walked inside it was dark and quiet, with just the hallway light on. So I was assuming the others were in bed.
I started getting a little nervous when we walked inside, not knowing where Jax was expecting tonight to go after he took me out on this great dinner and we did have a lot of fun.
But when he locked the door and set the alarm he just held my hand as we walked up the stairs.
He walked me to my door but he stopped and he turned to face me.
“I had a really great night tonight.” He said.
“Yeah. So did I.” I said. And he cupped the side of my face and he leaned down and kissed me, gently. Passionately. I leaned into it and I put my hands on his waist, but he was the one to stop it before I did.
“You get some sleep. We’ve got a big day tomorrow.” He said.
“What are we doing tomorrow?” I asked.
“You’ll see.” He said.
“It’s Saturday? Aren’t I training tomorrow?” I asked.
“No. Not tomorrow. We’ve got something else planned. Just get a good night's sleep.” He said, leaning down and pecking me on the lips again and then he walked to his room.
I went into my room and seeing that no one was inside I took my dress off and hung it up straight away and put on some much more comfortable clothes.
I pulled my hair down and straightened it all out and put it in a basic ponytail and I got into bed.
I read for a little while before I turned the light off and I finally fell asleep.
The next morning I was the last one out of bed and I walked down to the kitchen to get a coffee.
The guys were talking when I went into the room, but stopped as soon as they saw me.
“What did I miss?” I asked, leaning against the bench with the cup in my hand.
“Nothing. We were just discussing what we were doing today.” Lucas said.
“Oh yeah. Is anyone going to fill me in?” I asked.
“Nope.” Harry said.
“I hate surprises. I hope you realize that.”
“Well, suck it up. Today you’re getting plenty of them.” Lucas said, kissing me as he walked past.
I had to go and get dressed and then we loaded into Harry’s car and we drove to the middle of the city.
As soon as we got to a massive mall in the middle of the city, Harry parked the car and we all got out.
“This is it? We’re shopping?” I asked.
“Well, you haven’t really bought anything since you came to live with us. Everything you have came from your dad’s house with the exception of little things that we bought you. So, now we are having a full day shopping trip and you are getting whatever the hell you want and don’t worry about the price of anything. We can handle it.” Lucas explained.
I sighed because I knew that I wasn’t going to want to spend too much money because it wasn’t my money to spend.
But I agreed to go inside the shopping center and look around.
The first store we went into, I saw a lot of really nice casual clothes that I really liked but as soon as I saw the price, there was no way in hell I was going to buy them so I would put them back on the racks.
But that didn’t matter what I did because I noticed the guys picked them up after I put them back and added them to everything else that they were going to buy me.
I knew that I could argue with them about it but I wasn’t going to win. They were determined to buy me a whole new wardrobe so I could throw out everything that reminded me of living with dad.
And I had a walk-in wardrobe. It would take a lot of clothes to fill that bloody thing.
Harry and I somehow got separated from the others and we ended up at a cosmetics counter where they had pretty much every type of makeup that you could imagine.
“Can I help you?” The woman asked.
“Yes. This is Skylar and she was raised by a single father and has absolutely no idea about makeup.” Harry explained, causing me to get a little embarrassed.
“Oh. That’s completely understandable and I can help you with whatever you need. Do you want the whole lot of just the basics?” She asked.
“I think we should go for the whole lot. And try different colors with her skin tone.” Harry said.
So she got me to sit on a chair and she started pulling out a lot of samples and she would explain to me what it was and I was looking in a mirror while she was applying it to my skin.
Harry was very happy to stand back and just watch while she was doing me up like this.
I couldn’t believe how much patience he had for all of this girly crap. I didn’t even have that much patience for it all.
As the woman was applying the makeup to me and I was watching, I suddenly froze when I heard a group of women walking nearby. But it was one shrill voice above all the others that caught my attention and the woman stopped applying the makeup as she noticed it.
“Skylar. What is it?” Harry asked, coming around the front of me.
I slowly turned my head and saw a woman in her 30’s wearing way too much makeup and a skin tight dress with fake nails that looked more like talons standing there in front of her friends staring right at me.
“Skylar.” She scowled.
“Kitty. Dad’s ex-girlfriend.” I said.
