CHAPTER 69

JAX’S POV

I laid on Skylar’s bed holding her close to me but we weren’t saying anything. It was a comfortable silence. We were just laying there together in silence. A comfortable silence.
But my mind was racing.
Her dad used the same fucking cleaners. What are the odds?
I guess they are pretty good since not many people are in that kind of work. It doesn’t surprise me that her dad and William would have the same cleaners on speed dial.
I think they were both in very similar lines of work. But that’s what traumatized her so much that night.
I wish she would have told me that night and I would have kicked them out.
I know that there are other cleaners out there. And I’ll have to tell Lucas. He’ll know how to get in touch with some others so this doesn’t happen again.
I lifted Skylar’s hand up to my mouth again, but this time I stopped when I got a good look at the back of her hand.
“What?” She asked.
“Those bruises on your knuckles.”
“I’m proud of those.”
“I don’t blame you. God, you must have gotten her a good one.” I said, looking at her knuckles closer.
But when I saw the smirk on her face I started laughing.
She really was proud of what she did today. And I don’t think I could have been prouder of her.
She put Grace in her place and hopefully she’ll know now not to piss off our girl.
Harry and Lucas then came into the room and laid on the bed as well.
“What are you guys doing?” Lucas asked.
“I’ve got a ton of homework that I need to do.” Skylar said.
“That’s boring.” Harry said.
“Not to me. I have to get good grades. It’s the only way to get out of this city and away from dad’s shadow.” She said.
We all understood that, but we weren’t sure that we could get out of here by the end of the school year. I mean, we had the summer as well, but William wasn’t going to let us go that easily.
I looked at Lucas and he looked like he was thinking pretty hard. I knew that he was trying to figure out a way that we could leave so his father wouldn’t come looking for us. Or he wouldn’t cause trouble for us.
“Alright. Well, what do you guys want for dinner?” Skylar asked.
“We’ve already told you. You don’t have to cook or clean for us.” I said.
“I know. But I feel like I should be doing something.”
“Well, we still didn’t have that date that we were going to go on.” I said, looking over at her. And she raised her eyebrows at me. “Do you two mind if Skylar and I go out?” I asked.
“No. That’s alright. But if anyone tries to kidnap her this time, make sure you call us immediately.” Harry said.
“She’ll stay glued to my side the whole time.” I said.
Skylar rolled her eyes at us because we knew that it wasn’t going to happen again.
So I tell Skylar to hurry up and get ready while we left the room.
“Are you sure that you’ll be alright?” Lucas asked.
“I’ll take her to your dad’s restaurant. They know me there. And they’ll make sure that nothing happens. It’s practically run by the mob.”
“Alright. I’ll call them and let them know that you’re coming. I’ll get them to reserve the back room for you.” Lucas said.
“Even better. More privacy.” I said, wiggling my eyebrows at them.
“So no one can see you or get a clean shot at you.” Lucas said. But I started laughing.
I knew what he meant the whole time. I was just teasing him.
I looked over at Harry and he wasn’t as playful as he was before. He looked a lot more serious now and I wasn’t sure why.
He didn’t say anything before he walked off to his room and he closed the door.
Lucas didn’t seem to notice while he was on the phone making sure that we got the back room of that restaurant and I went to my room to start getting ready.
I knew that I had to wear a nice suit but I snuck back into Skylar’s room while she was in the shower and I put a box on her bed that I had bought a while ago and a bag next to it.
I went back and had a shower and got dressed in a suit for the restaurant.
When I came out of my room I saw that Skylar’s room was still closed and when I put my ear up against the door, I could hear her moving around in there. So she was still getting ready.
I walked downstairs and Lucas was in the kitchen ordering pizza for him and Harry.
“What’s wrong with Harry?” I asked, sitting at the kitchen island.
“What are you talking about?” Lucas asked.
“When I started talking about taking Skylar on a date, just the two of us and I made that stupid joke about us having the private room to ourselves, he got really quiet and went to his room.” I explained.
“He’s been in his room ever since. I didn’t notice. I’ll try and figure it out while you guys are gone.” Lucas said.
“Thanks. I don’t want him to be pissed at me or anything. I mean, he’s like a brother to me and it was a stupid joke.” I said.
“He knows that. Relax. I’m sure it’s not that bad.” Lucas said.
I nodded my head, trying to tell myself the same thing. But I knew that there was definitely something bothering him.
He’d seemed a little off for a while now. And I really hope that Lucas can get him out of it.
I mean, he’s never been the most open guy and he definitely doesn’t talk about his feelings that much, but we are like brothers and we’ve been through so much together.
I don’t want him hating me over something that we might be able to fix. If only he would talk about it instead of stewing over it on his own.
I heard something upstairs so I went to the living room and through to the foyer where I saw Skylar starting to walk down the stairs in the dress, shoes and jewelry that I had bought her.
Lucas and I both stood there speechless as we saw her walking down the stairs. Even seeing her cheeks go crimson red with embarrassment as we were both staring at her.
