CHAPTER 12
LUCAS’ POV
We all stayed at the hospital in order to support Skylar. We weren’t leaving in case she thought we were going to abandon her or in case she got any idea that we might have been lying to her. We didn’t want to give her any more anxiety than she already had. She didn’t deserve that and we didn’t want to do that to her.
While Jax was laying on the bed with her, we heard some yelling out in the hallway.
Skylar was still asleep, so Harry and I went outside to check it out and there was a middle aged man busting through the doors of the ward demanding to see Skylar.
No one needed to tell us that it was her father. He knew that she was here and we couldn’t let her anywhere near her.
Harry and I both charged up the hallway and we could see how furious he was about the whole situation.
I stood right in front of him and threw my palm straight into his chest so he couldn’t go any further and he looked at me with hatred in his eyes. But it soon turned to confusion, obviously because he didn’t know me and didn’t know why I was stopping him.
“You’re not going anywhere near Skylar.” I demanded. Harry was standing right beside me, not backing down from this pathetic piece of shit that was standing in front of us.
I could tell that Harry wanted to punch him right now for what he’s done to his daughter, but somehow, he was keeping his composure. Probably for the first time in his life.
“Who the fuck are you to tell me that I can’t see my daughter?” He yelled.
“Her friends. And by the time we’re done with you, you’re never going to see her again. You’ll be in jail for the rest of you miserable fucking life.” I spat at him.
He looked between myself and Harry and he obviously figured out that we knew more than he wanted us to. But he tried to push past us and we got into a fight as Harry and I both stopped him from getting past us.
Security had been called and they arrived shortly after but the doctor ordered them to detain him. The police were on their way.
So Harry and I turned back around and went back to her room.
Jax made sure that everything was alright and we told him that the police were coming to take him. It was all going to be alright now.
“She’s definitely not going home to that son of a bitch.” Harry said, staring at the sleeping Skylar on the bed. And that sentiment was echoed by myself and Jax. We already agreed that she was coming home with us.
She was nervous about it. There was no question about that. But that’s where she was going to be the safest.
“He’s never going to stop.” Skylar said, softly. We all thought she was still asleep. She’d been listening to everything. She knew that he was here wanting to see her. This wasn’t good.
“What do you mean?” Jax asked, looking down at her face as she wiped a couple of tears away from her face. Not looking up at him or towards us. She kept her head down.
“He’s never going to stop until he kills me. He’s been beating me since mom died.” Skylar said.
“Skylar. That was 13 years ago.” Jax said in complete and utter shock.
“It wasn’t as bad at first. It just got worse over the years. At first it was just him. Always hitting me, kicking me. Doing whatever he wanted. He dragged me down the stairs by my hair when the kitchen wasn’t clean enough. He made me clean the floors with a toothbrush and if they weren’t to his liking he would beat me again, and then make me clean again. Even if he had broken my ribs during the beating, I still had to finish the job. It wasn’t until the summer I turned 18 that he started inviting his friends over. It was only one that raped me the first time. But then more would show up. Sometimes they would tag team, sometimes it would just be one.” Skylar explained, without looking at any of us.
She kept her head down and I could see Harry and Jax’s faces change. Probably the same way mine had changed. We were furious. Almost ropable at what her father had done.
We had to try and keep our composure around Skylar. We didn’t want to scare her. But her coming out and telling us that, maybe she was starting to trust us.
I mean, that was a lot for her to talk about. But that also told us that we played a part in her agony at school. By just letting it happen. We didn’t do anything to help her.
We obviously didn’t know how bad things were for her, but that doesn’t alleviate our guilt.
Someone then knocked on the door and we stood up straight while Jax looked at the door.
There was a woman standing there with a file in her hand.
“Hi there. I’m Emily. I’m the therapist here. I was hoping to have a little time with Skylar.” She said. We all looked at Skylar and she sat up properly on the bed and she nodded her head to let us know that it was alright.
“We’ll be right outside. We’re not going anywhere.” Jax assured her and we left the room while the therapist closed the door behind us.
We couldn’t do anything now but just sit down and wait. We could sort of see them through the blinds of the window, but we tried to give them some time.
Skylar needed to know how to process her trauma and Emily said that she was going to try and help her with that.
We didn’t want to leave Skylar alone in that room, but we knew that Skylar needed the space and professional help that we obviously couldn’t give her. And it could hopefully help her heal from everything that she’d been through. That’s all we were wanting for her.
But we weren’t stupid. We knew that it was going to be a long road before that happened.
We were told that it was going to be a long conversation so we decided to leave the hospital to get something to eat.
None of us were really saying anything and we weren’t really that hungry either.
I just couldn’t forget about all the times that I was a little too harsh on Skylar. I thought she was overreacting. Especially at school when those girls were bullying her. I thought she was pathetic because she wasn’t fighting back. But now it all made sense. She didn’t fight back because I really don’t think she knows how to. She’d been getting beaten and abused for as long as she can remember and I now know that us not doing anything would have made everything so much worse. Especially since she obviously recognised Jax straight away. She knew who he was and expected him to help, but none of us did. We just ignored her and now we are all overwhelmed with guilt.
But we’ve all made it clear to her now that we’re going to stand behind her and help her in any way that she needs it. We don’t care what we have to do. We’re going to support her.
Even if she tells us to leave her alone. We’re not going to be far at all.
“Oh. Are you boys leaving?” A nurse asked as we were heading towards the front door.
“We’re just gonna get something to eat. Skylar is talking to a therapist and it could take a while.” I said.
“Which one of you is Jax?” She asked. And Harry and I both looked at Jax and he looked a little concerned.
“I am. Why?” He asked.
“It’s nothing. But while Skylar was unconscious she was calling your name. I just thought you should know that. I think she needs you to be here when the therapist is finished. She seems to have some sort of attachment to you.” The nurse explained.
I saw Jax’s face change. Not in a good way. He wasn’t smiling but he was concerned. We knew that this meant she did think of him as a safe place which is good. It’s what we wanted.
She seemed to have some reliance on Jax. I guess she believed that he was going to save her.
Maybe even after the mistakes that we had made, we now had the opportunity to make everything right and give her what she needed now. Protection and definitely support. She’d need that more than anything else if there was going to be an investigation into her father. And he would be pissed if he was let out on bail. We couldn’t let him get to her in any way.
