CHAPTER 102

We all hung around in the living room that morning and when Lucas turned on the TV there was a news reporter standing in front of the house where I was kidnapped talking about the murder suicide.
They didn’t name the people inside because families hadn’t been notified yet, but they did say that they are all teenagers and there looked to be some suspicious activity in the house.
“We took care of everything. There’s no suspicious activity.” Lucas said.
“Lucas. There were marks on the cupboard from a padlock and there was a chain in the brick wall that looked like it was keeping some hostage. That’s suspicious activity.” I said.
“Oh shit. DNA.” Harry said.
“What?” I asked.
“On the chain that was around your ankle. They could get DNA off of it.”
“At best they will only get familial DNA. If dad’s in the system then they might get me but I know that they don’t have mine.” I said.
“Do you know if they have your dads?” Jax asked.
“No. I wouldn’t have a clue.” I said.
“They could have taken it when he died.” Harry said.
“We need to get on top of this. We need to get that evidence that Skylar was ever in the house. They can’t know that she was there.” Jax said.
“I know. They will send it to the crime lab. It could already be there.” Harry said.
“You’re going to break into a police crime lab?” I asked, shocked.
The guys all looked at each other and I knew that they were doing it for me. They had to make sure that I wasn’t linked to the house but it was my dad’s house. I could easily say that I had just been in the house before and that’s why my sweat or whatever was in that room.
“Skylar. They would have gotten your sweat and skin cells off of the chains. Which means they will start asking you about child abuse. And with the padlock on the door, they are going to know that something is up.” Harry said.
“There’s nothing they can do if I refuse to talk about it. I’m 18. They can’t force me into foster care and they can’t force me to talk about it. And besides, there won’t be any point anymore because dad is dead.” I said.
“Guys. She doesn’t want to.” Jax said.
I could tell that they were all nervous about leaving evidence behind. It’s not something that they had ever done before and I knew that it was hard for them to do it this time.
But if the cops knock on the door then I will simply not talk to them.
I know my rights and if there is supposed child abuse in that house, I don’t have to talk about it and I don’t have to file a complaint. I don’t have to say anything to them.
That’s one thing I learnt from dad. One of the very few valuable lessons that he ever taught me.
How to get around the police in certain events.
But that wasn’t good enough for the guys. They wanted to get the evidence so no one would come snooping around.
I guess I understood. I mean, in their line of work it’s best not to have the police anywhere near us.
The guys were all pretty quiet that day. We were just hanging around the house but I eventually went to my room and I went to have a shower.
I got dressed for bed and when I walked into the bedroom, Jax was sitting on my bed alone.
“Where are the other two?” I asked.
“They’ve just got something to do.” He said. And I looked in his eye for a moment only to see that he kept looking away.
“They’ve gone to the crime lab. Haven’t they?” I asked.
“They just don’t want any cops hanging around. Lucas will be able to wipe anything off the computer that they collected from the chain and the chain will be thrown away.” Jax said.
“They have cameras in the crime lab.”
“Lucas knows how to deal with all of that. Just don’t worry about it.” He said, reaching his hand out to me.
I grabbed his hand and I sat on the bed next to him, but I was really nervous about the guys breaking into the crime lab.
They don’t even know if it’s going to be empty. I wanted to be there with them or something.
I felt useless sitting here. And they were destroying evidence for me. I felt like this was all my fault.
“What if something happens to them because of me?” I asked.
“Hey. Nothing that happens to them is because of you. You didn’t ask to get kidnapped. And they are doing this to protect themselves. To protect us because of what we do.” Jax assured me.
“But if I wasn’t living here then we wouldn’t have to worry about the cops snooping around.” I said.
He leaned forward and kissed me.
I knew that he was just trying to calm me down, and it did to an extent.
But I couldn’t relax fully until I knew that they were home and they were safe.
“I still haven’t said sorry.” I muttered to him, pressing my forehead to his.
“What are you talking about? Sorry for what?” He asked.
“For what I said to them before I was kidnapped.” I said with a shaky voice. But he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close to him in a warm embrace.
“You never have to apologize to them for that. They don’t hate you for what you said. They will never hate you for that. And they don’t blame you either.” He said.
“I hate myself for saying it.”
“Well, don’t. They know how you feel. They know that you were hurt and you only reacted like that because you love them.”
“Jax. What’s going to happen if you three find someone else that you love more than me?” I asked.
He pulled away from me but kept his hands on my arms while he looked me in the face.
“What the hell makes you think that’s ever going to happen?”
“People change. I mean, people grow apart. They meet new people. It happens.”
“It’s not happening here.”
“You don’t know that. You don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.” I said.
“Skylar. I swear, don’t ever worry about anything like that. I will never leave you. And neither will Harry or Lucas. I know how they feel about you. Harry hasn’t felt like this about anyone since Lizzy. You have brought out this whole new side of him that we thought was lost forever. Please, don’t ever think that we’re going to get tired of you or try to get rid of you. It’s never going to happen. At least not for me.” Jax said.
“So, I’m always going to have you?” I asked.
“Would that be enough if they decided to leave?” He asked. His own insecurities were now coming out. But I nodded my head and he breathed a sigh of relief when I did that and he pulled me towards him again.
“I’m really scared.” I said.
“You’re safe now. No one is ever going to touch you again. You’re never going to be alone long enough for anyone to touch you.” He said.
“I don’t want you guys to put your whole lives on hold for me. I need to be able to defend myself eventually.”
“Well, you can’t defend yourself against a tranquilizer.” He said. And I scoffed in agreement.
“Yeah.” I said.
Jax got me to move up on the bed and we laid down staring up at the ceiling as he intertwined his fingers with mine.
He was playing with them while we just laid there, not saying anything. Just having a comfortable silent moment.
